I was watching the live chat feed during selection and they were saying things like "The Grizzlies could beat Wisconsin" "Very balanced, Guys like Matthias Ward, Kareem Jamar, Art Steward. Very solid, very experienced." "Wayne Tinkle's team knocked off Weber State in the Big Sky final, robbing us all of a Damian Lillard NCAA tournament appearance. We suppose we'll forgive it for that, because this team is just as dangerous."
Also our OPPG stat puts us at first in the nation. Only allow 52.9 per game CBSsports is saying.

The guys on CBS bracket breakdown picked the Griz over Wisconsin as well and liked the Grizzlies chances against Vanderbilt in round three as well.

ESPN 2 and beating Weber like they did, didn't hurt. You gotta think that the Griz success in football helps too, as far as national coverage goes. Coach Tinkle will have this team ready, and the Badgers better not be looking past the Griz. I'm sure they won't be. Griz have won 14 straight (longest streak in the nation) and 21 of 22. Coach Ryan will be reminding his team of that. Go Griz!
I'm not going to say the 'experts' are wrong, etc, etc, etc. As far as I know, they could be right! However, for Badger coaches and players, it has to be a little irritating to continually be picked as the upset special each season! Last season, they were a popular upset pick and they ended up beating Belmont by 14. There is a reason Bo Ryan is 9-1 in opening round games.
Don't know much about Will Cherry, but I don't think he will get too many opportunities to take the ball away from Jordan Taylor, who is among the best in NCAA history in assist-to-turnover ratio.
Can Cherry play defense in the post? The Badgers haven't run the swing offense too much this season (or so it seems), but at close to 200 pounds, Jordan Taylor is one of the strongest point guards in the country and shows no hesitation in posting up other guards.

Can Cherry play defense in the post? The Badgers haven't run the swing offense too much this season (or so it seems), but at close to 200 pounds, Jordan Taylor is one of the strongest point guards in the country and shows no hesitation in posting up other guards.

One thing I would say is Wisconsin will have to play a full game. This Griz team has a tendency to come back from being down and winning big in the end. Will be interesting to see what sort of tempo falls into.
I could be wrong but my gut instict has the griz over badgers as well by 7 or more. They are really playing well as a team right now and I dont think they will be intimidated in the least by bigger schools. See the Hawaii game for some idea of that.

Actually Cherry can play post D very well. Jordan might move him and go to the rim but Cherry might still get up and block the shot. Griz also might go 4 guards. Or Steward or Jamar might have to contain him. Edit as well: Cherry may well weigh 200 pounds now. He's stronger than hell with good hops and I haven't seen anyone muscle him in 3 years. Even UCLA.

Cherry was the conference defensive MVP. He is lightning quick and very athletic. He is 6th in the nation in steals per game and blocks alot of shots. He is Montana's all-time steal leader, even though he is only a junior. Montana's other guard is 6'5". Both were first team all-conference.
I see that some sports analysts are indicating that Cherry can play with Taylor (or better). In a game over the weekend, a tv analyst listed Cherry as one of the five players in the tourney who could make a big difference in the tournament (or something like that).
You may want to do a bit more research, before making some of the declarations you're making.

Aaron Craft (Ohio State) is widely thought of as one of the best defensive point guards in the country and shot 75% from the field with 18 points just a few weeks ago against Ohio State. The season before, he single handedly brought Wisconsin back from 15 down to beat #1 Ohio State and put up 27 points.
Listen to the talking heads all you want, but they are just as susceptible to being wrong as anyone else (i.e. Doug Gottlieb picking against Wisconsin each season).
Cherry can take his Defensive Player of the Year in the Big Sky (25th best conference according to Sagarin) and I'll take a pre-season All-American and a first-team all-conference performer in the Big Ten (1st ranked conference according to Sagarin).
Jordan Taylor simply does not turn over the ball and is on pace to break the all-time NCAA assist-to-turnover ratio in a career. So, no, I don't think Will Cherry will get his steals. Just my opinion.
I just don't see any reason why I should pick against Taylor. He has been in the tournament all four years and knows what it takes to win on the big stage.

We're all speaking on perception since we have not been able to see each other's teams.
Why is Taylor ONLY 15th in assist-to-turnover ratio? What do you mean, only? You realize there are 345 Division I schools, correct? Where he is ranked is tremendous. Even more tremendous, his 3.83 ratio in 2010-2011 was far and away the highest in college basketball and it wasn't close.
Why doesn't Taylor have any blocks this year? I didn't know it was a pre-requisite for point guards to have blocks to be considered a good defender, but he was an all-conference defender as a junior and is part of a Wisconsin team that is first in the nation in scoring defense.
To this point in their careers, Taylor has accomplished much more than Cherry... and it's not close. We shall see what the outcome is on Thursday and I will gladly eat crow if it doesn't come out in my favor.
Wisconsin will be a tall order for us. They are big, strong, solid in every department. We will have to shoot lights out to beat them, and they will have to have an off night, it's as simple as that.
