Delaney comments at roundtable

SouthDakotaGrizzly said:
Coach Delaney spoke at a roundtable in Billings today. Here are some quotes, via the Cat-Griz Insider (Greg Rachac of the Billings Gazette) twitter feed:

Coach Delaney says there's been "a lot of crap" and rumors floating around Griz program, but far more positives

Delaney says he still doesn't know why Pflugrad and O'Day were fired and "probably never will"

Delaney: "We've had some things happen, but we're moving forward"

Delaney: "We won't be quite as aggressive defensively as coach Breske was. We probably won't take as many chances"

Delaney: "Will we change much from what Robin did on offense? No."

Delaney says Jordy Johnson's situation is "100 percent he said, she said" and it "will work itself out"

Delaney says LB Jordan Tripp "is so healthy it's scary"

Delaney says he wants to be the #Griz head coach for 2 or 3 years

Delaney says the Big Sky Conference realignment "is baloney." He'd rather play everyone in the league each year

I'll add a few more from Mick that I noted:

Timm and I like to use the tight ends a lot; we will have a lot of 2 TE packages and some 3 TE packages. I'd use 4 or 5 if I could.

Timm and I like the quick short passing game with 3 step drops. We like to neutralize the blitzes and rush.

Tripp is 243 lb now with 4.5% body fat, and maybe the second fastest player on the team. Our linebacking is going to be supurb.

JJ is 5'11", 188 lb. and the kind of leader that DD was. His availability remains uncertain.

We have a good shot at a 6'6" WSU dropdown TE that visited last week; he's available because Leach doesn't use TEs. His other option is D2 Bball.

I had 3.5 shollies left and used 2.5 to reward established players to increase their level of support because they earned it. This is something I intend to do more than BH or RP did.

Here are the TE's to chose from. There are others, but these are the only ones near 6'6" . Quite a stable to choose from.

80 Evan Hudson TE 6-6 260 FR BOTHELL, WA
82 James Boker TE 6-5 230 FR REDMOND, WA
84 Michael Hartvigson TE 6-6 254 FR BOTHELL, WA
88 Austin Seferian-Jenkins TE 6-6 258 FR FOX ISLAND, WA

It appears as if we have a very capable head coach with Mr. Delaney. :thumb:

I could not agree more. I love the fact that he calls it like he sees it and is not giving the patent politically correct - mind numbing answers that other head coaches are accustomed to. Some on this board have questioned his statements and abilities. Questions all you like. The guy has more than paid his dues and I like the fact that he is much older than your average HC. He does not have to worry about his coaching future, income and future contracts $$'s. The kids respect him and will play their as&&s off for him and it appears the other coaches respect him as well. We have great assistants, high caliber players and an awesome fan base. My prediction is more of the same (in a positive way). Win, win and win. Good luck Coach!

The official Griz rosters have Johnson at 6-1, 202. I figured someone was full of shit. I'm surprised after seeing the broadcasts of ground-level cameras, and shots of him standing on the the sideline looking 5-9 running backs in the eye, that Jordan reaches 5-11... maybe on his tippy toes. ;)

Hey mtgrizrule, pretty sure we can count out ASJ and Hartvigson -- as they are both UW Huskies, and not Cougars. ASJ and Hartvigson are the starters for UW -- I'd guess Boker or Hudson.

hah, no problem dude -- I don't know if those guy play for WSU, I'm just guessing -- I'm pretty sure ESPN has the years wrong also - I think ASJ was a sophomore, as well as Hartvigson -- I got no clue about those other 2 dudes.

Here is Wazzu's spring roster at TE: From their own website.

41 Hersey, Max RS FR 6-3/232 Tight End Tacoma, Wash. - Curtis
87 Lintz, Andrei RS SR 6-5/252 Tight End Bellingham, Wash. - Meridian
43 Simmons, Mansel RS FR 6-4/225 Tight End Elk Grove, Calif. - Sheldon

No mention of the other guys. I guess, chances are good we get 1 of them, then.

to say he doesnt know why oday and pflu were fired is really a bit of a white lie. he may not have it in writting but we ALL damn well know Engstrom fired them in an effort to blame them for the UM rape fiasco it has atm.
Personally, I think it was a witch-hunt. How do you feel about it Tokyo?

Does QB height at UM really matter? Depends on the offense on a particular play, I think. Ok, a 3-step drop w/ 2 or 3 TEs, I can see a tall QB (Nate?). A spread-option w/ the QB running either side, pitching off, passing, etc.? What has QB height to do w/ that?

3 outof the 4 tight ends noted in a comment above and relisted below are at UW not WSU and are not going anywhere. Hudson, Hartvigson and Austin Seferian-Jenkins (ASJ) are all at UW. ASF is one of the best tight ends in the country and also played hoops for the Huskies. I dont know about Boker - he could be at WSU.

84 Michael Hartvigson TE 6-6 254 FR BOTHELL, WA
88 Austin Seferian-Jenkins TE 6-6 258 FR FOX ISLAND, WA

Boker also a Husky.

Bingo..we have a winner...great kid tight with several current Griz, attended Mead High School.

I asked a fundamental question re: Griz football, and everyone, so far, has ignored it: What does height have to do with being a QB at UM? Esp. with the spread-option that UM likes to run? QB height comes up often re: UM QBs in eGriz. Why is that so important to you guys? Why would it help if JJ were 6'3" or 6'4"? What does it matter that JJ is 5-9, 5-11, 6-0 or 6-1? Geezus. If the kid wins games, what does it matter? Ok, so JJ is not NFL height. So what?

Dear Grizzoola,

This is in response to your question from yesterday. The answer is, no, it doesn't matter.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

Sincerely,
AWF

QB height is important because it makes it easier to see over the offensive and defensive line. Obviously the spread negates much of that, but it would be fairly easy to argue that if JJ was taller he could be more effective. He's still a very good QB, but I don't think anybody ever wishes that their QB was smaller.

In this offense, if "smaller" means faster or more nimble, then yes, we do want a smaller QB.

There are very few Cam Newtons out there, and none of them are coming to UM, as much as we love it and sing its praises. ;)

It is more important to the mayor than the rest of us.
