Vims Original Write up last Summer

DeMarcus Carr - Billings West (5'11", 195 lbs.) - RB (Unsigned)
The best pure RB in the state, DeMarcus displays a great mix of balance, speed, and vision when running the rock. He has a bunch of traits every college coach should want in a high school RB. Carr does not have position versatility which may hurt his value when a team doesn't like a part of his game as a RB. But he can clearly add value as a runner in multiple offensive schemes at the next level. Either in-state school would be a good fit for him.

Hayden Ferguson - Helena High (6'2", 200 lbs.) - FB/LB/S (Unsigned)
Productive, 1st-team All-State player from a solid Helena High team last year. Hayden played a hybrid OLB/SS role last year and also blitzed off the edge a bunch. He's slated to be the Bengal's starting QB next year so I don't know how much defense he will play. Regardless, Hayden will likely get recruited primarily at LB. Similar athlete to a kid like Garrett Graves.

Josh Erbacher - Billings West (6'4", 195 lbs.) - QB (Unsigned)
osh operated one of the best offenses in AA last year and he now has a AA championship under his belt heading into his senior season. He has an elongated throwing motion but I like how he pushes the ball downfield and his willingness to hang in the pocket. Will be fun to see how he improves during his senior year.

Mason Harding - Miles City (6'4", 240 lbs.) - OT/DE/DL (Unsigned)
When I watch Mason's tape, I see a kid who could develop into a solid defensive lineman when put on a college weight program. He's a better offensive lineman right now but he could be a decent role player on the DL at the next level, in my opinion. Mason has a good chance to shoot up this list with a good camp circuit. Should be a top NAIA recruit already.

Nick Eliason - Billings Senior (6'4", 210 lbs.) - TE/DE/LB (Unsigned)
Tanner Parsons - Shelby (6'1", 200 lbs.) - LB (Unsigned)

Good lookin list and a great analytical way of looking at the states class this year. Thank you again Vim for all you do. This is truly insight we’ve never had at our level and area.   :thumb:

In my limited knowledge, I’d agree this year has no tier one athletes except maybe Jaxon. Again, I have extremely limited knowledge in this area. My question is who do you think we’ve had in the last five or ten years that might be considered tier one?

I only have seven:

Matt Miller (Helena Capital) - 2010 Boise St.
Tanner Roderick (Bozeman) - 2011 Nevada
Dylan Hanser (Billings Central) - 2013 Washington St.
Will Dissly (Bozeman) - 2014 Washington
Jesse Sims (Corvallis) - 2015 Montana
Troy Andersen (Dillon) - 2017 Montana State
Gabe Sulser (Billings Senior) - 2018 Montana

Roderick and Sims maybe didn't have the careers everyone was expecting them to have. But out of high school, they were viewed as no-doubters FBS recruits. People will doubt me on Gabe but he was the best player in AA for nearly 4 years and one of the most dynamic playmakers I've ever seen on tape. Troy was completely under-recruited by FBS schools.

Jaxon Lee is a top prospect in the 2020 Montana class. But he is not a rare player for the state of Montana. That Tier 1 group is a high bar and for good reason. It should be hard to make that group.

Nope. Elite Tier 2 prospect coming out of high school though.

“Elite” tier 2. Maybe he’s just slightly less elite Tier 1?

Vim good work on this list. I like this concept.

Rostad was close to being a tier 1 because i believe if he would have went to the FBS camps he was invited to he probably has an FBS offer. He shut down recruiting real early and senior year which was still great play stayed similar to the previous year. It felt like he had to run a lot more.

Next year’s class might have 2 to 3 in that tier 1 category.

vim and dayday.....we have a relative small class signed....with the folks who have left the program, how do we finish this class and if we wait on next year, won't there be a gap at positions ?

It is a smaller class in general because not a lot graduated size wise but some players have left. Typically if you get gaps you quick fix it with Jucos or FBS transfers. Or you can sign a big class the next year and go with younger players.

I have no idea. However, Demarcus is definitely good enough to play for either in-state FCS school. One of the better running backs I've seen on tape since 2015.

Liam Haffey Dt from Missoula committed to Carroll College
Tucker Jones LB from Hamilton also commited to Carroll.
Both have signed per Carroll football twitter page.
