Since it seems like I'm the only person in these parts that makes threads for the UM sports that aren't football or basketball, here's the soccer one.

They had themselves a big weekend with home wins against Texas Southern and Boise State, shutting out both squads.

It also netted a sweep of Big Sky POTW awards for our fifth-year stalwarts named "Taylor": https://gogriz.com/news/2021/9/14/socce ... onors.aspx

Good to see these girls finding their identity. Losing some major key players from last year really shown through for the 1st couple of matches but it looks like coach is getting them straightened out just in time for con play. Go Griz!

Also, I know you didn’t mean it as a slight but I’m sure most of these girls don’t see soccer or softball as a minor sport. We here in this forum prefer to call it the “other sports” forum😄.

Well, my mistake then. I appreciate you pointing that out, though I do remember when I was a journalism student at UM over 15 years ago one of my professors referred to soccer as one of the "minor" sports so that was probably why I typed that in when making the topic. I managed to fix my mistake.

I've been to every home soccer game this season after not attending their games last spring and I support them the same way I support the football and basketball teams. I know that Griz football and Griz & Lady Griz basketball are the big dollar sports at UM but I'm not afraid to give the ladies on the soccer team some love, too. Same thing with the softball team but it's been more than two years since I watched them play because the pandemic wiped out their 2020 home schedule, and I didn't attend any of their games last spring as I wasn't yet vaccinated.

Griz beat Long Beach State 1-0 in a game where The Beach kept UM in their own end for pretty much the whole match.

Then Taylor Stoeger to Sydney Haustein happened in the 85th minute.

Ugh, I put up the wrong tweet! (though it did include the moment the match ended)

Here's the goal that broke the backs of The Beach:

Two more big wins for the Griz! Especially on Friday night in Flagstaff against the preseason favorite NAU.

Today's game was a tough battle as well, as Southern Utah played much better than their dismal 1-8 record showed.

Cam Xu was a brick wall again in both games, as UM hasn't allowed a goal since their 3-0 loss at Gonzaga on Labor Day weekend.

Good Sunday for Griz Soccer. 2-0 win at EWU and Idaho gives Northern Colorado their first conference loss.

If Griz win out (play Weber State and Idaho State this final week of regular season) will at least be a top 2 seed in conf tourney and get a bye. If Northern Colorado picks up another loss, as well, then Montana would be the #1 seed and I think, get to host next year's conference tourney. Northern Colorado plays Idaho State and Weber State this week to finish, as well.

Also, the recent aggressive changes to the offense since last week's loss have made the team even more exciting to watch. Highly recommend watching the replay of Friday's game against Idaho (https://www.espn.com/watch/player/_/id/ ... 8e817fe97c) and today's replay against EWU (https://www.espn.com/watch/player/_/id/ ... 505ed170da).

Current BSC Standings:
T1 - Weber State (6-1)
T1 - Northern Colorado (6-1)
3 - Montana (5-1-1)
4 - Northern Arizona (4-3)
5 - Idaho (3-4-1)
6 - Sacramento State (3-4)
-------------------------BSC Tourney cutoff-----------------------------------
7 - Eastern Washington (3-5)
8 - Portland State (2-4-1)
9 - Idaho State (2-5)
10 - Southern Utah (0-6-1)

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think a team gets 3 points for a win and 1 point for a tie. So...

Current Standings from a Points Perspective:
T1 - Weber State (18)
T1 - Northern Colorado (18)
3 - Montana (16)
4 - Northern Arizona (12)
5 - Idaho (10)*
T6 - Sacramento State (9)
T6 - Eastern Washington (9)*
-----------------------Only Top 6 Make BSC Tourney---------------------------------
8 - Portland State (7)
9 - Idaho State (6)
10 - Southern Utah (1)

*Idaho and EWU only have one game left to score points, against each other. Everybody else has two games left this week.

So, only SUU has been eliminated from making the conference tourney.

Griz win 2-1 over Weber State!

Come back from being down 1-0 about midway through 2nd half on two Stoeger goals. One wouldn't have happened without the all-out effort from Skyleigh Thompson to beat the goalkeeper to a ball.

T2 - Northern Colorado (18)*
T2 - Weber State (18)
4 - Northern Arizona (15)
5 - Idaho (10)
T6 - Sacramento State (9)
T6 - Eastern Washington (9)
8 - Portland State (8)

Better video from Shaun Rainey of the scores and a save by Xu. Wish he would've started about 5 seconds earlier to better show Thompson's effort.
