Idaho Mens Coach and Potential NCAA violations

MOSCOW, Idaho – University of Idaho men’s basketball coach Don Verlin was placed on paid administrative leave Thursday, one day after university officials received a consultant’s final report detailing three potential violations of NCAA bylaws.

Idaho reported those potential violations to the NCAA, according to athletics department spokesman Mike Walsh. He said the report, from the firm Ice Miller, “includes references to instances over the course of a few seasons.”

None of the violations involved impermissible monetary payments to players, Walsh said. One of the violations is seemingly minor. Walsh confirmed that basketball operations staff member and former player Stephen Madison was alleged in the consultant’s report to have practiced with the team.

Verlin’s administrative leave is initially for 10 business days. But the situation surrounding it remains fluid, and the leave could be shortened or extended, according to Walsh, and it might result in Verlin being fired.

Ice Miller is a law firm that was founded in Indianapolis. They have an NCAA practice. At least, Idaho was smart enough to hire this firm right away, and not wait until 6 months after the ncaa investigation started, like UM and Engsrom did.

"Collegiate Sports and NCAA Compliance

The Ice Miller Collegiate Sports Group offers a full complement of NCAA compliance related services that include detailed knowledge and experience with the NCAA's major and secondary infractions process, student-athletes and waivers.

Ice Miller has initiatives such as comprehensive compliance reviews and rules education and training programs. In addition to the experience at Ice Miller, our lawyers and professionals have more than 50 years of combined NCAA experience as NCAA staff members, on-campus athletics administrators, coaches and student-athletes. Our team is well versed on NCAA rules, regulations and procedures."

From what I can see, this doesn't look overly serious at this point. Of course, we can't see the issues. But a short admin leave like this for two weeks would seem to indicate something fairly minor.

Hot dogs probably.

A classic from the vandal board:

"At least when were committing violations in the past we had something to show for it".

Idaho should just be glad the NCAA didn't investigate the Larry Eustachy-era. That guy has cheated and/or pushed the limits everywhere he went.
