LGriz vs. NDU - final 72 to 51

11 am start for a School Day game and the school kids don't show up. Fun game to watch, though.

UND came out looking a lot tougher than in their game against Weber State. UM didn't really have a defensive answer for Fleet? down low. So glad to have Sammy back. She looked great. Another good all-around game from Stiles and really like what Huard and Bartsch have already shown as true frosh. Polymeni got her first (I think) minutes on the floor and Kiefer got in at the end, as well.

I’m so happy Sammy is back! Maybe Shannon can sue over that too….beeeeeaaach!

And the massacre that is now the lady Griz B ball program continues.

Was this tongue-in-cheek or not? Sorry, this is the internet, I can't tell!

Most certainly. I almost added a “how soon can we get Shannon back” comment but I thought that might be overkill.

Oh yeah!
It's early (and NDak had some injuries). Montana WBB looked pretty ragged at times... but the key to its 72-51 win over NDak was halftime and 3rd quarter coaching adjustments. Sammy Fatkin was phenomenal and will have a huge impact on Montana's improvement this season. When that happens, Abby Anderson and Carmen Gfeller won't have to deal with getting double- and triple-teamed.

Most of the Griz mistakes were turnovers that were the result of playing a decidedly uptempo game. I'm pretty certain we'll see the team adjust to that pace with improved court vision.

But the big story to me has been the early play of Helena frosh Dani Bartsch, in particular, and the high promise (and shooting skill) of frosh Haley Huard. Montana's front and back court are suddenly deep. Bartsch has an uncanny natural court vision and Huard has a classic shooting guard quick set-and-trigger shot. Both are showing nerves, but I think it's only a matter of a week or two until they settle in. I'm eager to see how this team transforms, because the result will give Carmen (in particular) and Abby more room to have front court impact. Here are a couple of clips that give an idea about Montana's ramped up pace of play.

In the 20 plus years I’ve been watching the Lady Griz, this years squad has far and away played better against back-court pressing than I’ve seen.

Yes, there’s still the occasional turnover, but they look crisp and confident. Stark contrast to years past.

Enjoyed watching the game. Found it a bit odd that a game was scheduled at 11 AM on a weekday...is this typical? ESPN+ is working out pretty well so far for catching more UM sporting events and it is way less glitchy than PLUTO was.

It was scheduled as a "School Days' game, but then the schools backed out because of Covid.
