. . . "neither team led by more than four points for the final 15 minutes Saturday night in Missoula, Montana.

Weber State men’s basketball just missed its opportunity to start Big Sky play at 4-0 when Lonnell Martin took a lob-like pass from Cam Parker and his twisting layup attempt spun around the rim and in with 3.3 seconds left, lifting Montana to a 74-72 win. The second half saw six ties and nine lead changes, though the last lead change came when a sequence of lead-changing buckets ended with WSU’s Dillon Jones pushing in a paint shot for a 62-61 lead, and Montana’s Brandon Whitney scored on a drive to answer for a 63-62 advantage with just more than 6 minutes left. From there, Jones grabbed offensive rebounds to make things happen for Weber State and finished his 17-point, 16-rebound performance by claiming an offensive rebound, backing down his man and scoring to make it 72-72 with two minutes left. Each team then got defensive stops, possibly with uncalled fouls, Whitney turned the ball over on a drive, and JJ Overton missed a potential go-ahead bucket for WSU with 30 seconds left. That set up the Parker-to-Martin winner. With 3.3 seconds left, Montana denied Koby McEwen the ball — he led all scorers with 24 points — and Dyson Koehler’s 30-footer hit off the rim as time expired.

“Second night of a road trip against two good teams, I was really proud of our effort. We threw it out there and gave it everything we had, and basically came up one play short,” WSU head coach Randy Rahe said. “It’s a tough one to lose.” Overton added 11 points and six rebounds for Weber State (10-5, 3-1 Big Sky). Robbie Beasley got loose for a 5-of-9 3-point performance, leading Montana (10-5, 3-1) with 19 points. Forward Josh Bannan added 13 points and 10 rebounds. Montana led 23-15 early before Weber State ripped off an 18-2 run when McEwen drained a 3 that put WSU up 33-25. But the Griz answered with a 7-0 run to make it 33-32 at halftime, which then extended to a 16-2 run after halftime to put the home team up 41-35 with 18:30 left. Overton brought the Wildcats back with a two-handed putback dunk on a missed McEwen 3, then put in a Koehler missed dunk to make it 46-46 with 13:45 left, starting the long dance down the stretch.
WSU outrebounded Montana 33-26, including 12-5 on the offensive glass, and won the turnover battle 15-10. But after winning the 3-point line in Thursday’s win at Montana State, WSU shot just 5 of 17 from deep and Beasley’s hot hand led Montana to a 10-of-19 mark.
