ok, so i haven't written much about the ultra-nationalist cancer that keeps growing in china, fed by ccp propaganda. maybe you heard about that commercial flight that recently crashed in china? if you have the stomach for it, read the comments section of this article from the south china morning post - it claims to be moderated, but a large percentage of the posts on the article are vicious towards the u.s. - over a civilian plane crash in china: https://www.scmp.com/news/china/article/3171470/china-eastern-airlines-flight-mu5735-data-suggest-pilots-pulled-out?module=storypackage&pgtype=homepage

here's another one, alex lo. he's a chinese-canadian, safely living in the west, while nearly every day publishing trash about how great the ccp is (in his mind), and how awful "the west" is, in what is considered a major international newspaper (or was): https://www.scmp.com/comment/opinion/article/3171554/america-not-spider-man?module=opinion&pgtype=homepage

and then there is jixian wang, a chinese living in odesa, ukraine. he's been countering the ccp narrative while showing life in the ukraine, which got him cancelled from all chinese social media, but not after he was disgustingly attacked by the nationalists, who side with putin and cheer the war. in response, he posted a great video that is a tutorial on how to think independently, but i won't show it here because i don't think there are any mandarin speakers, and i'm not at a level where i could easily translate it.

my point? a country of 1.4 billion captives is heavily brainwashed to think you and i are terrible, and any trouble in the world is because of 'the west', no matter how uninvolved 'the west' might be. forget right wing, left wing, republicans and democrats, and all their stupid infighting, the ccp is a real danger to the world, and it is time we actually did something to decouple, instead of just giving the idea lip service. this was typed on a taiwan- designed and manufactured computer.

lastly, here is a video showing how disgusting the chinese internet has become regarding ukranians: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ye8eEYgBIrI

What amazes me, being involved in my children's school, is how many Chinese kids want to come to school here. A few have told me they don't ever want to go back to their country after finishing college.

yes, they are constantly hit with propaganda about the u.s., saying how unsafe it is, etc, but they still want to come. my friends living there mostly want to leave. i recently helped a specialist md obtain the contacts and info she needs to get a u.s. license and so she can practice here. she still has to do a u.s. residency and fellowship, but she says even those pay much better than she makes in one of the top hospitals in china (md's are not treated with respect in china). the city where i spent most of my time is locked down right now, something i kept telling them to get ready for, because the 'underground' news was it was happening soon. it has been about a week now, and nobody i know in that city has received any government food, etc... all they have received is mandatory covid tests, sometimes having to wait three hours in the rain to get them. the mental toll must be pretty big.

Their house of cards is starting to crack. Glad that US companies are starting to move manufacturing back from China. Our country needs to stop making medicine there. Not sure how long Xi can keep this up but, to the outside world, it will be all good.

got a message this morning about the lockdown in chengdu saying it was just extended. people are not happy - yesterday there was a large earthquake nearby that caused buildings to shake significantly for at least a couple minutes. naturally, people tried to leave their buildings, but were met by the police and told they couldn't - meaning they had to stay in their buildings, which are often poorly constructed. since everyone there is, trying to figure out entertainment options using software that gets them over the government's firewall. i recommended 'wag the dog'...

another 'people are pissed' article, with a couple videos of folks locked in their apartment compounds expressing their dissatisfaction to the 'big whites', aka the lockdown police and pcr testers. it is always strange to hear women use the slur "cao ni ma", or 'f---- your mother' at the authorities.

for anyone who would like to include that phrase in their own lexicon, it is pronounced "chow knee ma", with 'ma' sounding like the same slang for 'mother' in english.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-09-07/china-locked-down-chengdu-residents-not-allowed-leave-earthquake/101413554

today's news is that those i know in chengdu are pissed off, as they just were told 7 more days, this time with no going outside, and no ordering delivery. a doctor friend has to work on an empty stomach in a major hospital, and some areas are requiring three pcr tests a day. it is nuts. oh, and the numbers being reported are a joke.

the lockdown in chengdu is getting to be like shanghai, with orders for people to not leave their apartments repeatedly being extended. also, the government supplies given to people has often consisted of rotten meat and vegetables, so it is unusable. i was even told today that there are rumblings of people being so fed up that they might start to defy the government and hold protests. this is all info from friends in chengdu.

my guess is that after the government feels like they've shown that they are 'in control' for long enough, they'll move over to chongqing and repeat the process. chongqing is experiencing a serious drought along with it's usual boiling hot weather, and people there will not be happy about it. the city also has the reputation of being rough and tumble, so they might not be as docile as those in chengdu. or, i could be wrong about the whole thing.

finally, is anybody actually reading this? if not, i'll stop with my posts.

Not so fast. NOT SO FAST!!! You must be 'over there,' somewhere out of the U.S. Do you think there is going to be any negative reporting about China in 'Biden World?' Nothing negative will appear on any format. They've paid off 3/4 of the House and Senate, the entrenched political class won't rock the boat. You are the only source of information about what goes on over there.

In other words, keep posting.

ok, i'll try. the chengdu lockdown mostly ended yesterday. the only problem is, taxis, buses, and the subway aren't running, in a mega-city where most rely on public transport. oh, and you have to stay in the district you are in, unless you live in another district and were stuck somewhere else when the lockdown happened, pretty much without warning. some lockdown activity still going on, though, as one of my friends said all the people in a neighboring building were hauled away to quarantine a few days ago. lot's of cynical 'happiness' being posted on social media about the lockdown ending. a kid got his social media closed because he called xi jinping a 'fatty'. a guy was arrested for spreading rumors when he posted that chengdu would be locked down in two days. what he said happened exactly as he predicted, but i suspect he's still being re-educated. lots of people have lost their livelihoods from all the lockdowns. also, china is harassing the hell out of taiwan, militarily and economically, but the taiwanese are pretty much just ignoring it, as usual. hope to visit there when they end the 4 day home quarantine. gotta go in the winter, it is too hot in the summer, unless you are way up in the mountains, it is very mountainous, lots of 10K+ peaks. and for greenie, the hong kong 7's are supposedly taking place this year, but who knows, it could get shut down the day before. don't know why anyone wants to go there now, with the over-the-top 'national security' law.

this is a couple years old, but it sure looks like greenie's buddy max baucus is now in bed with his ccp buddies. don't know if he's walked any of this back, but he is, at heart, a politician...

My impression was that Baucus, privately, felt that the US and Obama should be tougher with China. I haven't talked to Baucus for a few years. When I had drinks with him after a Griz game.

Since Biden just said that the pandemic is over, when do you think China might think about changing its drastic policies? I like the Chinese food in China, and in Hong Kong. I fear Hong Kong is ruined, and I may never go there again. I just got my Omicron shot. I see that it's not being called a booster.

thx for the above answer. that baucus wanted a tougher stance on the ccp was my impression, too. i was interested to find that he is (or was) on the board at alibaba, jack ma's multi-billion dollar enterprise that the ccp went after a year or two ago, when ma criticized their banking regulations. he (jack ma) has rarely been heard from since, which is weird, as he seemed to like the spotlight. as for hong kong, i'd say it is ruined beyond recognition. the "national security law" that the ccp put in place took care of absolutely any freedom to criticize the most minute aspect of the government or police. interestingly, they instigated it "world-wide", which means they want to scare anybody and everybody who might have anything to do with china into not criticizing the ccp. fucked up. a friend from the mainland who had lived there in 2016 or so said he wants to go back, but being in the mainland, was completely unaware of the crackdown there. anybody who isn't directly benefiting from the ccp and can afford to get out is getting out. the brainwashing starts early, as in kindergarten, so people with kids are especially inclined to leave. a very large number of schools have closed, and teachers resigned, as a result of people leaving and/or thinking it isn't worth the risk to be involved in education. it sucks. i recently read the hong kong 7's are supposed to happen this year, but a lot of other events were, too, and many have been called off. their handling of covid is a joke.

hope baucus hasn't become a ccp shill. i'm sure it would mean a lot of money for him, though.

in today's news... i think things are starting to get to a bit of a boiling point. the head of the cdc in china told the populace "do not touch foreigners" because of monkey pox. this, for a disease that passes via blood- to- blood contact, and is mainly affecting homosexual men. one chinese friend posted that this was nothing but racism, and that 'they are trying to isolate us', followed by 'they are dragging us back to the 1960's'. another said his friends were publicly cursing the ccp, something people just don't do.it is interesting that at least among the thinkers, the realization is there that with zero covid, closed borders, passports being cut up, etc, that they are trapped in their own country. sigh. perhaps the worst part is that i'm warning these people that they need to tone it down, or in other words, self-censor, for their own good. it is even in hong kong now, some guy was arrested for playing a song on the harmonica that the cops considered a 'protest song'. he faces years in jail for breaking their 'national security law'. remembering that the ccp believes this law applies world-wide, this is why i strongly encourage greenie to not go to hong kong, not now, and maybe not ever. sigh. all the progress the ccp had made towards slowly tolerating a little criticism under zemin and hu is gone. and it is all the west's fault.

so there is today's update, for the one or two of you who might be interested.

The "Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution" began in 1966. Little Red Books, roving gangs of brain-dead zealots rampaging with the blessing of Mao, destroying anything of non-Chinese communist thought, beating up and killing at will. It took Mao to assume room temperature to put an end to that shit. Ten years of anarchy.

Just learned Microsoft has 10,000 employees in China. That is not good for many, many reasons...

microsoft has been doing the ccp's bidding for a long time. a lot of their employees in china are involved in research and development, and i suspect anything they develop is quickly copied by the ccp. google left due to privacy concerns, but have snuck back in and are still trying to figure out how to make money without looking like they are being lackeys for the ccp. facebook keeps trying to make money here, there, and everywhere.

xi's creepy coronation as emperor has begun, and so far he's focused on 'national security' (paranoia), zero covid (for ego and "face", can't admit mistakes or that western vaccines are far more effective than Chinese vaccines), colonizing taiwan (recently reported as the wealthiest per-person country in asia), marxism + 'common prosperity', which equals a return to mao-like communism, and the fantasy that he, and only he, can lead china to 'incomparable glory'.

lots of creepy pictures in the south china morning post, along with articles: https://www.scmp.com/news/china/politics/article/3196167/incomparable-glory-awaits-china-world-stage-xi-jinping-tells?module=lead_hero_story&pgtype=homepage

i'm surprised by the number of people i know who saw video of the hu jintao episode - the long video where it was obvious he didn't want to go anywhere. otherwise china is just a cage right now. vpns are still successfully blocked, so nobody can easily access outside news.

and for greenie, the hong kong sevens are happening this year. don't know how people are going to drink beer through their required masks, but... also, mostly locals are going: https://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/hong-kong-economy/article/3197451/tickets-still-available-hong-kong-sevens-organisers-sell-25000-local-fans-30000-set-attend-kick?module=lead_hero_story&pgtype=homepage
