Montana Football History?

Are there any good online resources dedicated to Griz history that consist of more than just stats? When did Montana stop using the name "Montana State University"?

I know Idaho's original administration building (which burned) said "Idaho State University" on it and I can't find when that name was discontinued either.

Not online, but we have a pretty recent coffee-table book covering the history of Griz football. Maybe someone has scanned in some of the pages somewhere

Wow, the Doug Betters story is very inspirational. I was a big Dolphins fan back in the 80s. I had no idea the Doug had that accident. What a great guy. Very impressive.

Think it's the same one I got for christmas last year. Good book.

sparty: Vandal fans have every reason to second guess the questionable decisions mad after venerable Neale Stadium was replaced with the (urrp) Kibbie Dome. How much betterto have replaced the destroyed wooden bleachers with concrete leaving open the opportunity to add seats to an easily expandable outdoor stadium. Certainly UI could have had seatng in the 20,000 to 25,000 plus range by now. The KD is a football anachronism I expect most UI fams would admit.

See it and weep, Vandal fans. Unlike KD, Neale looked like a stadium!

Do you know who is was that made the book?

Towards the end of the book, GGG is pictured in his game day uniform. He is captioned as being Montana's "Ultimate Fan"

Another book with useful info is "The Divide War" by Kearney. See link. It is mostly about the Griz/cat rivalry but it does have info on other games for each season covered.

I dont know if many of you are aware of this, but for my birthday I received a new book available from the bookstore. It is called the University of Montana Football Vault, it is written by Mick Holien and is an amazing collection of stories, pictures, and reproduced artifacts such as game tickets, programs and other items. It covered the entire history of the Griz up to last year's national championship game. I have just started reading the stories, but I can tell you this is an amazing piece of Griz history and should be owned by every serious Griz fan.

I don't think it was necessarily the "dome" that was the mistake. It was downsizing the original plan by several thousand seats and eliminating the arena that cost the Vandals the future. After all, domes were in fashion in the 70's. It's just that the design was so incompatible with expansion.

Idaho actually lost two great stadiums. Neale Stadium was good, but MacLean field would have been absolutely beautiful nowadays.

Great story from Grizzly Football history:

The Sports Illistrated's SI Vault, Your Link to Sports History, story on the NCAA Division I-AA championship game between Montana and Marshall at the Thundering Herd's home in Huntington, WV in 1995...

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1007606/index.htm

Note: There are 2 pages to the story in the link.

Check out the comments on Dickenson after the game.

There are several more SI Vault stories or blurbs about Montana in this link:

But on the bright side it has built-in legs and coaster

Domes (which BTW Kibbie geometrically isn't) like the erstwhile circular sports stadiums represent kind of an architectural fad. The "circulars" in Cincinnati. Pitsburgh and St Louis have all passed into history. Then there's Kansas City's 40 year-old Arrowhead Stadium which is as contemporary today as anything being built in the past 10 years. There's also Washington-Grizzly Stadium whose additions have been based on whim like Sarah Winchester's house in San Jose. Former UM Prexy Dennison also thought, like Sarah, that he would live as long as he kept expanding. But he's still alive I'm told.

And you can be grateful that UM couldn't afford to build a new stadium in the early to mid-80's, when likely that stadium would have been a similar dome. I can remember hearing the Grizzly President or AD (not sure who) back in 1983 being interviewed on Flagstaff radio before the UM-NAU game, gushing over the then new and state-of-the-art Skydome, wishing he could upgrade to something so nice...

I used to have the Missoulian clippings from the mid 60's showing the architects rendering for the proposed Wa-Griz Stadium with its original symetrical design showing that it would be built to accomodate a "dome." There were two small upper decks that would have raised capacity to 16,000 without any end zone seating. All of that went out the window with the first two expansions.
