Quick recap of when these lists are produced. First one is released a week after winter sports are complete. Second one is released after spring sports are complete. Third is released right before their senior seasons (takes into account camp performance). Final one is released throughout January up until signing day.

The junior film has been reviewed. The remaining 40 will be posted as I continue to complete the ranking.

Quick summary of the Top 10:

1.) Carson Rostad (Hamilton) - QB - 6'3", 205 lbs.

The ace prospect of this class and the best QB to come out of the state in years. He's also a very good safety which should boost his recruiting stock even higher. Carson will compete in the top QB camps this spring and summer to see if he can garner an offer from a Power 5 school. If not, he will likely be a Griz due to family connections. The Griz have also recruited him very hard and lets face it, they aren't that deep at QB once Sneed graduates. You insert Carson into that room in 2020 and the Griz may have a potential 4-year starter at the position starting in 2021.

2.) Jaxon Lee (Missoula Sentinel) - WR/DB - 6'1", 175 lbs.

A kid who grew up in Belgrade before moving to Philipsburg with his family for high school. Jaxon has transferred to Missoula Sentinel for the spring semester and will be fully eligible to compete in all sports for the Spartans starting with football this fall. As football player, he makes plays everywhere. You can develop him at each WR spot or either safety spot in college. Jaxon is a gamer and produced at an elite level his first three years. He's betting on himself to compete and star at the AA level his senior season. As of this date, the Cats have recruited him much harder than the Griz. But he will likely accept the best offer if the Griz throw their hat in the ring....which they likely will when Bobby gets a look at him during camp season.

3.) McCade O'Reilly (Bozeman) - FB/LB - 6'0", 205 lbs.

A bruising fullback/linebacker from Bozeman who took over for Joe Olson last year when Olson went down for the year with an injury. McCade is the younger brother of Payton (Miami of Ohio) and Callahan (MSU). He's stockier than his two older brothers but his tape is more similar to Payton's than Callahan's. McCade is also a damn good wrestler and he has positional value for two Montana teams who want to use fullbacks and/or develop homegrown talent at LB. If the Cats offer, McCade will likely stay home.

4.) DeMarcus Carr (Billings West) - RB - 5'11", 195 lbs.

The best pure RB in the state, DeMarcus displays a great mix of balance, speed, and vision when running the rock. He has a bunch of traits every college coach should want in a high school RB. Carr does not have position versatility which may hurt his value when a team doesn't like a part of his game as a RB. But he can clearly add value as a runner in multiple offensive schemes at the next level. Either in-state school would be a good fit for him.

5.) Hayden Ferguson (Helena High) - LB - 6'2", 195 lbs.

Productive, 1st-team All-State player from a solid Helena High team last year. Hayden played a hybrid OLB/SS role last year and also blitzed off the edge a bunch. He's slated to be the Bengal's starting QB next year so I don't know how much defense he will play. Regardless, Hayden will likely get recruited primarily at LB. Similar athlete to a kid like Garrett Graves.

6.) Max Anderson (Kalispell Flathead) - OL - 6'4", 275 lbs.

Max is the best center and interior lineman in the state. He doesn't have elite technique similar to Holden Sampson last year but he does have a high football IQ and plenty of size to move bodies. Max understands the importance of body positioning when opening up running lanes on the interior of the offensive line. Both in-state schools should be doing what they can to add him to their o-line rooms.
Max has that "future captain" vibe to him.

7.) Hank Rugg (Frenchtown) - DE/LB - 6'3", 190 lbs.

Hank has some of the best junior film of any kid in the class. He has a bounding, high-knee running style and a physical demeanor on the football field. Hank isn't as big as Derek Marks was in high scool but their tape is very similar. Hank gets up field quickly with a good burst off the line as a DE and does a lot of good things as a TE either blocking or receiving. Obviously, 180-190 lbs. won't play as a TE or DE in college but Hank will likely add the proper weight to be more heavily recruited by the two in-state schools. I like his versatility and he's a kid who gives max effort on every play. Also a 4.0 student.

8.) Parker Johnston (Helena Capital) - WR - 6'0", 165 lbs.

Parker has kind of been a late-bloomer as a football player but everyone knew eventually the athleticism would come. His older siblings are/were star basketball players at the college and his entire family has an athletic pedigree. However, Parker earns it on the football field by being a great route-runner and technician at the receiver position. I'm banking on him having a big senior year to solidify his status as a top player in this class. Again, another player with direct Griz ties.

9.) Aaron Richards (Butte Central) - DL - 6'3", 230 lbs.

Aaron is a brute on the offensive and defensive line for Butte Central and has been All-State since his sophomore season. I see him more as an interior defensive lineman. His technique needs a lot of work on both sides of the line but he gets by usually by being the biggest, toughest kid on the field. What concerns me with Aaron is I feel he could be the in the conversation as the best player in this class...if he wanted to be. I want to see a more dominant player his senior season. Regardless, he should receive recruitment interest. His family has direct football Griz ties.

10.) Tommy Mellot (Butte) - QB - 6'0", 180 lbs.

Tommy doesn't have the same production or skillset as Carson Rostad but he can throw the football with the best. He showed solid dual-threat ability as a runner his junior season which should help his recruitment as a college QB. Tommy needs to reduce the turnovers and one-read throws his senior season. I'm expecting a big year from him and Tommy needs one to solidify his status as a top football prospect.

Vim - if you had to compare the talent levels of the final top ten from his past year & your preliminary list this season, what are your initial impressions? Thanks & I’ll hang up now & listen for my answer.

I really like the Top 4. But the remaining 5-10 I listed wouldn't have made the Top 10 in any of my previous rankings over the past four years. I think there is a drop-off and there will be a lot of PWO offers.

11.) Oran Nash-Bergen (Billings Senior) - WR - 5'6", 140 lbs.

Oran is a water-bug meaning he is very small and very quick in space. Despite his size, he led AA in receiving last year and was excellent on special teams. He's too small for my liking but some team may give him a shot...and he's a playmaker.

12.) Keeley Bake (Fairfield) - WR/DB - 5'10", 165 lbs.

Keeley is just a solid football player and has been an important kog in the machine up there for Les Meyer in Fairfield. He can cover and run routes with the best in this class. I like him in the slot. Keeley has a great work ethic and attitude so I expect him to be recruited by UM/MSU.

13.) Drew Deck (Kalispell Glacier) - WR - 5'9", 155 lbs.

Drew may be more track athlete than football player but he had a solid junior season for the Wolfpack. He's tough to defend on go routes and his ball skills on tough catches jumped off the film. Another potential slot recruit.

14.) Josh Erbacher (Billings West) - QB - 6'4", 190 lbs.

Josh operated one of the best offenses in AA last year and he now has a AA championship under his belt heading into his senior season. He has an elongated throwing motion but I like how he pushes the ball downfield and his willingness to hang in the pocket. Will be fun to see how he improves during his senior year.

15.) Rollie Worster (Missoula Hellgate) - ATH - 6'3", 205 lbs.

Rollie is 100% a basketball player and is already a MT Gatorade Basketball Player of the Year. He's also a Griz basketball verbal. But as a football player, he has a lot of versatility and earned 1st-Team AA All-State honors at safety last year. He's been Hellgate's QB the past two seasons and Rollie will get one more year to show some of his talent on the football field.

16.) Tanner Russell (Kalispell Flathead) - LB - 5'10", 180 lbs.

Tanner is kind of the Balue Chapman of this class. He primarily played DE last year mixed with some LB and he was a terror off the edge to the tune of 16 sacks and 1st-Team AA All-State honors. Tanner is tough to block due to his speed and quickness mixed with underrated physicality for a kid his size. Can he gain weight and maybe make a splash at LB in college? I think so but probably not at the FCS level.

17.) Hank Dunn (Eureka) - QB/S - 6'0", 160 lbs.

Hank took over QB duties last year at Eureka after two straight championship seasons with Garrett Graves...and Hank didn't disappoint. As a QB, he has a nice throwing motion and solid arm. He's a good athlete so he has some dual-threat ability. As a safety, Hank can run and cover the back end like a top safety. If Hank adds weight, he will be a sleeper to pay attention to this fall.

18.) Liam Haffey (Missoula Loyola) - OL - 6'4", 255 lbs.

Liam is still raw as a tackle but he's got good feet (watch him play basketball). He's a good athlete who moves well for a kid his size. He just needs more technical development as an offensive lineman. Not to just compare players from the same school but Liam has a lot of similar traits to former Loyola lineman Joe McElroy. UM/MSU has there eye on him and will likely want to see how he does in camp this summer.

19.) Francis Werk (Malta) - OL - 6'6", 285 lbs.

Francis is easily the biggest lineman recruit in this class which automatically gives him extra attention as a recruit because schools will always recruit "big". He played center last year for Malta and showed some really good push in the run game, especially one-on-one matchups. He will need some work in pass pro but it honestly feels like the kid hasn't grown into his body yet. If you get him into a weight training program and develop him for a few years, you could have yourself a diamond in the rough. Again, it will come down to how he does in camps if he attends them this summer.

20.) Cody Asbeck (Fairview) - WR/DB - 5'10", 160 lbs.

Cody is a scat-back type player from Fairview. He's been super-productive for the Warriors since he got on the field a few years ago and he does a lot of good things as a receiver, runner, and corner. Cody's best chance to prove he belongs is to get to a camp this summer because I think he has the ability to compete against the best in Montana.

Vim - Thanks so much for your efforts with our Montana boys. We know you don't sit down for 15 or 20 minutes and just scratch this out. Wondering more about Erbacher form West. Saw him several times last year and thought he was a little inconsistent. I thought he might be great in the Frontier conference if he gains some consistency.

Would like to remind everyone that every kid listed below my Top 5-6 will likely be PWOs. Every kid below that range needs a ton of development and are all high-end Frontier recruits.

21.) Asher Croy (Huntley Project) - RB - 6'0", 210 lbs.

A workhouse back from Worden, MT. In the shadow of Blake Counts record year, Asher ran for 2,173 yards and 32 touchdowns in 10 games last year. If Huntley would've won two more games (which would have made them state champs), Asher may be holding that season record. Asher runs hard north/south and is physical after contact. Speed will be the question with Asher being a FCS recruit but he will be a top NAIA recruit.

22.) Jaden Bienvenue (Billings West) - OL/DL - 6'2", 255 lbs.

Jaden is an intriguing prospect. He plays with a ton of energy and physicality on the interior of the offensive/defensive line. Jaden has a long mane of hair which adds some personality to the way he plays. Per an article on the Billings West 2018 OL (http://406mtsports.com/high-school/football/a-q-a-with-billings-west-s-light-hearted-but/article_37313029-a8fb-5fb7-88a6-12fc30b55dea.html), Jaden was said to be the most vocal of the group and likes to turn up the heavy metal in the weight room. Kind of sounds like a kid you want playing in the trenches right? I'm keeping my eye on his recruitment.

23.) Trey Yates (Colstrip) - DL - 6'1", 230 lbs.

Tucker's little bro. A ton of similarities between the two. Trey is a little slimmer and he actually played some DE his junior year for Colstrip. He is a champion-level wrestler in the heavyweight class. Trey isn't quite as dominant as his brother was but there are tools to develop. Will be interesting to see how he gets recruited.

24.) Tucker Jones (Hamilton) - FB/LB - 5'10", 190 lbs.

A versatile athlete who lined up at RB, WR, and TE in Hamilton's offense last year. On defense, he's a solid outside linebacker who moves well.
Tucker will have an increased role on both sides of the ball for Hamilton this fall and will get plenty of opportunities to shine his senior year.

25.) Kameron Moreno (Butte) - RB - 5'8", 190 lbs.

Kameron is your classic short, stocky RB who is tough as nails. He won the 2019 State AA Wrestling Title in the 205 lb. weight class, beating fellow football prospect McCade O'Reilly. As a RB, he's got good feet and balance. His future may be on the wrestling mat but Kameron will be looked at as a RB prospect this fall.

26.) Jess Bellows (Miles City) - WR/DB - 5'10", 160 lbs.

Jess is another slot receiver prospect with a ton of quickness. He can run jet motion with the best in this class and can be dangerous on the deep ball. Jess can also play some corner. He's another kid who could really move up boards if he shines at camps this summer.

27.) Jake Kindel (Eureka) - FB/LB - 6'0", 205 lbs.

If you want a FB this year, there are a handful in this class to go get. Jake is definitely one of them. He's been Class B All-State since his sophomore season and is a physical presence on both sides of the ball for Eureka. As a MLB, he comes downhill hard against the run. As a RB, he prefers to lower the shoulder instead of going east/west. Jake also has good hands out of the backfield as a receiver so there is versatility to his game. I expect Jake to show really well at camps this summer and jump up boards to potentially getting an offer from UM/MSU. Bobby and Jeff like to recruit H-backs so Jake should get attention.

28.) Journey Grimsrud (Huntley Project) - OL/DL - 6'3", 235 lbs.

I really like the way Journey plays guard. He has a good stance and fires off the ball well. As a pass blocker, I like how he anchors against bigger defensive lineman and widens out his feet to establish a solid base. He's the primary puller in Huntley's scheme and he shows good technique. If Journey was just a little bigger, he would be higher on this initial list. He's also a good wrestler so I will definitely track his senior year. There may be some defensive line in his future as well.

29.) Kadyn Craigle (Helena Capital) - FB/LB - 5'10", 185 lbs.

Kadyn is slated to have a big year for Capital on both sides of the ball this fall. Like Jake Kindel, Kadyn gets downhill and looks for contact but he shows underrated athleticism in the open field. He's got a little Chad Newell to his game as a runner because he can one-cut-juke guys at the second level. As a LB, he does a decent job of shedding blocks and wrapping up ball carriers. Like most of these RB/LB prospect in this range, speed will likely be the biggest deterrent to Kadyn getting recruited by UM/MSU. But he's intriguing based on his junior film.

30.) Finnegan Davis (Red Lodge) - RB - 5'10", 180 lbs.

Finnegan is the dude in Red Lodge's offense. Whether taking direct snaps from the Wildcat, going in motion, or just getting a standard handoff, the Rams feed him the ball in a variety of ways. I like Finnegan's balance running between the tackles and he has a good feel for how blocks are developing in front of him. There's some Logan Jones in his game and he will have a big opportunity at camps this summer.

Thanks Vim, what position in the cats offensive scheme would Rostad play, linebacker?

Fun to read the info on these players, thanks for all the work you do to put this together. Excited to see the rest of the list. There are some players not yet named with size and a lot of speed. Thanks again!

Thanks! And remember, the initial list of kids who I liked on film. Discussion is encouraged!

21.) Asher Croy (Huntley Project) - RB - 6'0", 210 lbs.

This kid is a beast. I just watched him last night run the 100 at Billings West and couldn't believe his frame and legs in particular. Not sure what you question about his speed but he looked great last night and ran a 11.63 100 meter. Thats pretty good for a kid that is 6' 210 lbs.

11.63 is decent for a college running back who will likely be more of a power back like Asher. He was in that 11.8-12.0 100m time last year. Since he's already shaved .2 seconds his junior year, the speed questions are going to turn into "how much to offer" questions. If he gets down to like 11.4, I can almost guarantee he will get a partial offer after summer football camps. He is already 100% a PWO kid but if he gets even faster at that size, he'll be in the Top 10 discussion by year end. Good for Asher!

31.) Conor Reitler (Billings Skyview) - OL - 6'4", 260 lbs.

Played both ways for the Skyview Falcons his junior season. However, his football future will definitely be on the offensive line. Conor was a standout right tackle last year and is slated to have a big senior season. Could quickly rise up this list with elevated play in 2019 because he has the size and skillset to develop into a solid college offensive lineman.

32.) Nick Mitzel (Missoula Loyola) - QB/ATH - 5'10", 165 lbs.

A decent QB prospect mostly due to his athleticism. Because of that athleticism, Nick has position versatility and it will likely boost his recruitment at positions like WR or S. If you can operate Loyola's passing attack, you are a smart football player and likely a good athlete to boot. Nick's also a lefty...which doesn't matter but just wanted to point it out because the world needs more left-handed QBs.

33.) Mason Dionne (Havre) - RB - 5'11", 180 lbs.

Mason burst onto the scene last year with an All-State season at RB for Havre. He has a good blend of balance, power, and speed. Mason is squarely in the mix of a crowded RB class in 2020. If he can put a team like Havre on his back this fall, Mason is going to receive extra consideration. But first, he will have a shot to prove himself this summer at football camps.

34.) Brad Nieves (Columbia Falls) - LB - 5'11", 210 lbs.

Brad is a technically sound LB prospect who does his job in defending the run and pass. He has a good amount of physicality to his game but was trusted to cover slot receivers/tight ends in Columbia Falls' scheme. The Wildcats have lost a bunch of talent the past two years so Brad will have a bunch of opportunities to shine his senior season.

35.) Mason Harding (Miles City) - OL/DL - 6'4", 240 lbs.

When I watch Mason's tape, I see a kid who could develop into a solid defensive lineman when put on a college weight program. He's a better offensive lineman right now but he could be a decent role player on the DL at the next level, in my opinion. Mason has a good chance to shoot up this list with a good camp circuit. Should be a top NAIA recruit already.

36.) Justus Peterson (Dillon) - QB/ATH - 6'3", 180 lbs.

Much like Nick Mitzel, Justus is a better athlete than QB (and he's also a lefty!). If he wants to play at the next level, WR will likely have to be his position. Also like Nick, when you are the QB of the Dillon Beavers, usually it means you are a solid all-around football player who has intangible leadership skills on top of tangible athletic ability. Justus gets the job done and will be the point man once again his senior season.

37.) Tel Lunde (Wibaux) - ATH - 5'10", 165 lbs.

If you want to watch a talented 6-Man kid (there are actually a few this year that will flirt with PWO consideration in my opinion), look no further than Tel. Now, watching 6-man tape can be interesting to say the least because its backyard football at its finest. But he does things in the open field that make you think "hey...this kid flashes the ability to be a slot WR or SS at the next level." If anything, Tel should be a highly coveted NAIA recruit.

38.) Quinn Sullivan (Butte) - WR - 5'11", 160 lbs.

Tommy Mellott is required to throw the ball a lot for Butte and he spread the ball around to a bunch of targets in 2018. But his favorite target was Quinn, who led the Bulldogs in receptions, yards, and receiving touchdowns. Quinn makes plays on contested catches and/or in the open field. He can play inside or outside receiver and possibly even corner at the next level.

39.) Konor McClafferty (Butte) - OL - 6'5", 210 lbs.

Despite being a bit undersized in terms of weight at left tackle in AA, Konor earned 2nd Team AA All-State honors for the Butte Bulldogs. He flashes the ability to play left tackle at the college level. Konor just simply needs to keep developing his body or, in simple terms, he has to put on weight. His ranking on this list will fluctuate depending on how big he gets by next fall. If he can get into that 240-250 range, his recruitment is going to get a bump. If he stays light, NAIA will likely be his football ceiling...which is still pretty good for a high school recruit.

40.) Matt Simkins (Butte Central) - TE/WR - 6'5", 175 lbs.

Matt is another talented football player who simply needs to add weight. He currently plays in the slot and/or tight end for Butte Central and is a legitimate weapon in the passing game. Matt also plays some defensive end but his future will likely be on offense either as a bigger outside receiver or a flex tight end. If Matt keeps getting bigger, he may be a Top 15 player by the end of this year. When he's running routes and attacking linebackers/safeties, I see Matt Rensvold (former Polson Pirate and current Griz TE).
