Pretty great read

I found this to be some insightful trivia as I have always related much of the tradition around our program(s) to the moniker "Griz"...

"In fact, UCLA’s Bruins nickname is partially due to Montana. Beginning in 1923 for five seasons, the football program went by ”Grizzlies,” not Bruins, but because Montana (1925) preceded UCLA (1928) to membership in the Pacific Coast Conference and held rights to the nickname, UCLA switched to Bruins."

Thank you for sharing! There are some great pieces of Montana Grizzlies history in there!

Love me some leather helmets, single wing and square-toed kicking shoe football. Thanks for sharing.

It makes you wonder if UCLA had joined before Montana, what would Montana's nickname be?

That's a great question! I'm sure one of the historians on the board can lend more context on how the mascot originated. I have always liked the fact with a few exceptions (Only D-1?) we are unique in that regard.

The mascot of the university is Monte, a Grizzly Bear. In 1897, a live bear cub traveled with UM's football team, then known as the "Bears" (the "Grizzlies" name was adopted in 1923). Numerous live bear cubs who served as university mascots, first named Teddy, then Fessy and finally, in the 1960s, Cocoa.

Not a historian, I only play one on TV.

Too bad the UofM didn't patent the mascot 'Griz.' Grizzlies in Memphis? A few exceptions that shouldn't have been, in MHO.
