GRIZ GRIT: Cashing in on Griz Fans

By Mick Holien, 09-16-10
The chase for a 13th consecutive Big Sky Conference title begins Saturday at Cheney, Wash., when the Grizzlies look to extend a streak of domination that has included winning 31 of their last 32 league games since losing at Montana State University in 2005.

Not to take anything away from Montana’s stellar performances, but one should remember that during this 13-year streak the Grizzlies have tied for the league crown five times.

The worldwide Griz fan base has perhaps tripled during these winning seasons, allowing Washington-Grizzly Stadium to continually expand the apparel to be sold.

When I came to Montana in 1984, the little amount of team colors that were worn by past or current athletes. Now you can seldom travel anywhere without seeing Griz maroon in a variety of shades.

According the latest statistics obtained from Collegiate Licensing Corp., the organization that monitors the trademark sales of college apparel, the University of Montana ranks first among Football Championship Subdivision schools and 56th in Division-I.

Ironically, the list is topped by the burnt orange of the University of Texas, the colors that head coach and later Athletic Director Jack Swarthout brought to UM when he left the Longhorn staff in 1967.

The maroon and silver colors were adopted after the 1995 championship.

More people buy Griz apparel than Gonzaga or Wyoming, for example, and the Grizzlies rank just 10 spots back from upstart Boise State University, which I am sure will explode on the next list if it continues its winning ways.

Montana just trails Stanford University, University of Washington and Washington State University, while the nearest FCS schools are some 20 spots down the list.

The sale of apparel not only has dramatically increased but so has the number of fans who annually head down the road to take in a Griz game. With games at Cheney, Wash., Portland, Ore., and Greeley, Colo., many fans are anxious to make a weekend out of it, take in a road game promoting their team, then spend some money out of town.

As opposing institutions have long realized, packing your stadium with maroon neutralizes any home field advantage.

Eastern Washington University thought moving the Griz game to Joe Albi Stadium was a good way to market the Eagles to the Spokane, but soon realized it just made more room for Montana fans.

And with the construction of luxury boxes in Cheney, the game was moved back to campus several years ago.

The problem for Griz fans is that league schools, especially in these challenging economic times, have quickly realized the Montana game is the crown jewel of their schedule. And because of its popularity they can charge more for a ticket.

But Eastern Washington and Portland State went a step further.

While there will be a limited number of single-game tickets at Hillsboro, where the Vikings play this year, in order to buy a ticket for the Griz game you have to buy a two-game set for $60.

At Eastern Washington, in order to attend the first game on the Eagle’s new red turf, you must to join the Eagle Athletic Association ($120) after which you are entitled to buy a pair of tickets.

When remaining tickets went on sale Sept. 1, Eagle fans were notified of a three-hour head start to secure a ticket before they went on sale to the general public.

Now while all this generated a lot of message-board buzz, it isn’t exactly an anomaly or even a new idea.

Major institutions long have realized the significance of “rival” games as a way to generate additional revenue for their respective athletic departments by charging higher admittance.

There is a price for being recognized as the top FCS program in the nation.

I think what rankles me most about this is that the Griz got to where they are without taking "shortcuts". It was a long and slow process of building winning ways and developing an enthusiastic fan base willing to shell out hard earned dollars to buy Griz gear and travel to places far flung to watch the Griz. Other teams who are unable to replicate that success start to complain or even worry about the fact that their formally half full stadium will now be packed with a lot of visiting fans. Gee, what a crappy problem to have. So instead of trying to build up their programs they work to alienate the visiting fans to help level the playing field. I suppose it isn't unethical but it is rather short sighted. In a pure sense, home field advantage doesn't matter a bit when the visiting team is so much better than the home team and based on the Griz winning percentages that has been the case for a very long time. Frankly I wish not a single Griz fan would travel and the Griz would destroy the home team then I could sit back and watch the fallout. What lame-ass excuse would they come up with next?

I was considering both the EWU and PSU trips this year, but they will not get my money.

May I recommend the next Cal Poly road trip instead?  :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

While I would never advocate not attending an away Griz game, I would suggest that Griz fans be mindful of the money they spend at these games. While there may be little the typical Griz fan can do about the ticket price set when the Griz come to town, there is a lot a fan can do to support (or not) the university authorized concessions and the local economy of these communities. What might the impact be if Griz fans decided not to purchase concessions, programs, split-the-pot, etc. at these games? What would the impact to the local economy be if Griz fans planned to buy gas, food, beverages, lodging out side of the local scene? Would the local businesses eventually express concern to the athletic administration about the impact of intentionally 'gouging' loyal Griz fans? Certainly something to think about.

We plan on Lodging, Eating, and Gassing up in Spokane for this trip. I don't appreciate the gouging. Stay classy Big Sky.

tickets for the Cal Poly game were less expensive there than buying them from UM...but, both were good prices..at Cal Poly 2 tickets were $30. and UM, $38!

1327 miles is a little out of my range for an early season FCS game.

This is the ultimate compliment to your team and fans...congrats!

Question: EWU/PSU/UNC fans will pay the same price as griz fans, no? I'm assuming they don't check ID's and those with a Montana drivers license are charged more.

This is still a capitalistic society which gives athletic departments the right to charge what the free market would support. I believe UM does the same thing when MSU comes to town.

Additionally, UM charges $31 for single game tickets which is a good bit higher than what other schools are charging for single game tickets. So not only are Griz fans victims of "price gouging" at away stadiums, but they are also victims of "price gouging" by their own adminsitration.

No one is complaining about fair pricing, i.e. pricing that applies equally to all (whether a little or a lot). The complaint is about opponents working hard to put visiting fans at a distinct disadvantage. Arguably both EWU and PSU have done this. I would be complaining just as loud if the Griz tried to pull this crap. If no one voices any opposition then they better just shut up and take it when more teams do it and it starts to become even more extreme (which of course may or may not happen -- but if it does then all the sheep will have to accept the blame). It hurts nothing for people to express their disapproval in a meaningful and constructive way. But hey, suit yourself (baaaa).

Both MSU and UM jack their prices up when it comes to the annual homecoming game or Cat-Griz game.

I know this is rather sophisticated for a Cat fan to understand but they jack the price up for EVEYONE. That behavior is not the problem. Besides, Mick (though I love him as an announcer) slips something past the reader and maybe I am the only one who caught it. He implies it is wholly acceptable to make extra profit from rivalries. I don't know if I agree but it happens all the time and so has become the norm. Fine. But since when is PSU or EWU a rival to the Griz? Just because they think they want to be? Few Griz fans see EWU as rivals (at least in the context of a real rival like MSU). Even fewer see PSU as rivals -- even though Glanville wanted PSU to see the Griz that way to get his team amped. I live in Portland and I know that PSU fans really, really want to beat the Griz but no such rivalry exists even in their minds.

By Mick's logic, every team in the Big Sky is a rival to the Griz and therefore justified to create any outrageous advantage for their fans. OK, great. If there was ever a sign that the Griz have outgrown their conference, that could be it. Maybe the Griz need to have a number of losing seasons to make all of their "rivals" feel better. Redistribute the wealth (through discriminitory ticket policies in this case). It is becoming the American way...

Much of that money goes to bonds that have directly benefited fans. Hard to call that gouging.

Im out of country but if you managed to get the over inflated tickets dont spend a dime more than you have too in Eastern Washington area. Its the only way to give EWU the finger for this ticket bullshit period. EWU doesnt deserve the financial support of our fans.

Go griz!

And there someone standing in line to take your ticket. It's supply and demand, why do they charge higher prices for Griz games, because there is more demand for the ticket. I think the AD's would be negligent to do anything else, they've got budgets to balance.

Yeah, I'd agree, and say that doubling the ticket price from $30 to $60 per ticket is "jacking up their prices".

But I don't have a problem with that really, other than to cringe a little. Because you get what you pay for, the Griz/Cat game is "worth" double the price. It's the biggest event every year in the state. :twocents:
