On paper, best Griz team ever??

The only thing that is stopping the Griz right now from being paper champions is the lack of starting at the QB position. By the end of the season that shouldn't be a problem, but any tough conference games early on may pose a problem

I think Roper has proven he has the experience to win games (won a bowl game for the Ducks). The bigger question will be how quickly he can learn the offense. If he can run the system effectively before the conference games start, we should be fine. However, if he cant have all the plays learned in time, the conference games you mentioned may become that much tougher.

(Granted, this is assuming Roper will be the starter, but at this point I think its safe for everyone to assume he will be the starter, at least come time for the conference games.)

As I do every year around this time, I'm starting to mentally count down the days until the season kicks off....and I like the talent that will be wearing the maroon and silver, but like the initial post stated, the games are won and lost on the field. Pedigree doesn't always translate into performance.... I think character will define the team....when something bizarre happens, such as a fluke turnover or two and we are suddently down 14-0, well, it's those moments that will give the team the chance to show its character. On paper, we have tremendous potential; I can't wait to see how it plays out on the field.

Gee, seems to me that the "best" teams ever were the ones who won a national championship in 1995 and 2001...all others are just pretenders.

Wait, you think that a team that lost to the Cats and got SCHOOLED in the first round of the playoffs AT HOME was the best Griz team of all time?

Aren't you the same guy that thinks Farris is going to end up with a better pro career than Mariani?

Credibility. Out the window.

Maybe I got the years mixed up. Whatever year Ochs was a senior, and we lost to JMU in Chatty, was the best Griz team, talent-wise, that we ever had. We had 8 players from that team sign with either NFL or Canadian football teams.

But, I am willing to bet you $100 right now that Farris played in more NFL games that Mariani will. Are you up for this bet, or are you all talk, like I presume?

Settle down, Jimmy.

Remember that you time raced the horse to prove how fast you were? Loolz.

Do you seriously want to make a $100 bet on an outcome that can't be decided for at least 5 years?

Considering that I don't lose money, I print it, fine.

$100 it is.

We'll meet back here in 2015 on this EXACT DATE and we'll wack-up the cash.

I agree with the '95 squad, but the 2001 Griz did beat a pretty weak Furman team.

The '96 Griz lost to Marshall at Marshall. That Marshall squad is roundly considered the single best FCS/1-AA to have ever suited up, the '85 Bears of this division so to speak.

Because of that I still feel the '96 team was better than the 2001 Griz.

But, a lot has to go right just to have a chance to play for all the marbles and the 2001 got it done, and the '96 boys fell short.

There has been some question as to Roper's talents and even though he has not had a great deal of time on the field, considering that he got his starting job when Dixon went down, he did very well at OU. The offense was designed specifically for Dixon who was a run/pass qb, not a typical pocket passer.
Roper is seeing the writing on the wall again because of the same type of Dixon offense for the present qb and Oregon's loss is our gain. Living here in Oregon I have seen Roper play as much as he has been on the field; he is scary good for FCS level play and if he can continue to improve he may be something we have not seen for many years.

I too believe that young Mr. Roper has huge potential. Whether it will be realized will depend on how well he picks up BH's offense and how much BH is willing to adapt his offense to take advantage of the skills that Roper has.

Well, alls I can say is, I guess it's time to book a room in Chatanooga before they all sell out! ;)

I booked mine when I checked out last year. Seriously.

I tried to do it while checking in, but the check-in date had to be within 365 days.

You buy beer at the tailgates?

What? Loolz.

Also, thanks for reminding me that you are from the Butte America in the USA, and not that South American Butte that I've heard is a total shart hole.

Oh, and STATEMENT. I shouldn't be holding you to any kind of a spelling standard though.

Keep swinging that hammer there, necktie. Nobody will ever suspect that you're gay if you keep talking about hammers and tools. Nobody ever.

Mariani will never be on an active NFL roster for a regular season game. Remember you read it here. And I love Mariani. Just not into ridiculous over-hype of Griz football players.

While Roper may be an upgrade from Bergquist, lets settle down a little on the hype machine. The same he's-a-true-talent-who-got-a-bad-break-at-his-old-school things were said about Josh Swogger, Jason Washington and Jeff Disney before they came to Missoula and those three led us to a combined one playoff run past the first round. Ochs ended up working out well but 1 out of 4 is not a good score.

In my opinion, transfers don't really mean much and I say to look at Portland State as an example. How many D-I transfers did that 2006 Montana team have on offense alone? Swogger, Chambers, Allen, Russum, Horn, Bradshaw, Coleman and Quinn (although I don't remember if he was eligible that season). Of our homegrown products, one player on that team is currently an NFL starter (Carpenter), one is getting serious minutes (Biermann) and at least three others (Dow, Harris, Anderson) signed contracts when they were done at UM. On paper that team shouldn't have been beat. On the field, UMass found a way to do just that.

For my money, the best team I saw was the 2004 team which was one or two boneheaded plays from brining home another national championship. I'm a bit too young to really remember the 1995 or 1996 teams so take my opinions with a grain of salt.
