Dan Carpenter Continues To Impress

Hello egrizzers, found this for you,

MIAMI DOLPHINS TRAINING CAMP ONE-LINERS
Posted by Michael David Smith on August 3, 2008, 9:01 p.m.

Rookie Chad Henne appears to be gaining momentum in the team’s quarterback battle.

When Dan Marino visits practice, he’s the best quarterback there.

The only thing consistent about the Dolphins’ offense is its inconsistency.

RB Ronnie Brown says he’s not completely ready after last year’s knee injury.

Rookie Dan Carpenter is giving Jay Feely a run for his money in the kicking competition.

Coach Tony Sparano likes what he’s seen of LB Junior Glymph.

Says Sparano of his approach to training camp, “We want to create the environment around here that makes practice hard so that the game is a little bit easier.”

RB Patrick Cobbs is making his case for making the team by showing that he can play well as a special teams gunner.

Here's some more information.

KICKING JOB ON LINE

Sparano said history won't be enough to win the kicking job after veteran Jay Feely missed two field-goal attempts Saturday.

Rookie Dan Carpenter was perfect.

''There's competition at the position,'' Sparano said. ``When we're competing every opportunity matters, it really does, whether it's Jay, whether it's the wide receivers.''

Sparano said he was not concerned by Feely's afternoon but added: ``How we evaluate the kickers and quarterbacks is not different.''

Translation: All three quarterbacks are getting a chance to win the starting job, and that will be the case with Feely and Carpenter.

here is another point of view.

Dan not kicking deep seems contradictory to what he did in college.

Nice article. Looks like he's doing very well. Hope he wins the job. Thanks for the info, little bear.

Thanks to little bear for this article. Seems that Carpenter's KO problems may be a thing of the past. The word in THIS article is that not only has Carpenter been outkicking Feely, but that it's become a PATTERN. Carpenter was perfect on FGs again with some VERY deep KOs.

If this continues, I'd expect Feely to be cut or traded about halfway into pre-season.

What concerns me is that there's no mention of Carpenter competing for the punting job, which would make a TON of sense for a struggling team; the roster spot thereby saved could be used for a valuable extra position player or a fourth QB.

Thats cool, but you gotta remember, the guy that wrote it could already be a big carp supporter, so he might be biased...

Not many teams use the same guy for kicking and punting, do they? First, teams in the NFL need guys who are world class at both skills, and not many people fit that bill. Second, you don't want to have the chance of one guy getting hurt and suddenly losing your entire special teams kicking crew.

I don't think many team value a 4th QB more than they do a starting punter.

I could name several NFL examples of multi-positional punters, but none of them recently, unless one counts the part-time punters employed by the Broncos and Eagles. Yes, one takes the risk you mentioned, BAC, but the idea does provide extra depth at a "normal" position. You might not make it a 4th QB, but you COULD have an extra wideout if you have a wide open passing attack, an extra tailback if you're a Ground Chuck type, or even an extra DB if you like dime or higher coverages.

According to the Dolphins website today, Feely is nursing an "undisclosed" injury...
