Sac State Finishing the BSC at #2?

There's a little game going on at the Championship Subdivision Website, called "The FCS Elimination Game." http://www.championshipsubdivision.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=16134

So far, the game has eliminated teams like Villanova, Richmond, and James Madison. The game, so far, includes the following BSC teams and what others in FCS country think of them. Unlisted BSC teams have been eliminated in this game.

Montana 69
Sacramento State 50
Eastern Washington 31
Northern Arizona 31
Montana State 13
Portland State 10

Two things surprise me: SacSt and MSU. SacSt possibly finishing #2? Well, Greg Rachac's analysis of returning BSC players, shows a possible finish at #4. See: http://www.egriz.com/grizboard/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=43907 Greg writes for the Billings Gazette. The point is, SacSt could well be the dark horse of the BSC this year. Yes, we'll see, but it'd be well for Griz fans to be up for the SacSt game. (I'm not a Hornet fan, btw, altho I'd like to see more challenge from the bottom tier BSC teams. This could be the year for the Hornets, and it's not just Rachac.) SacSt ahead of EWU & NAU?

MSU is another story. Rachac's rankings have MSU finishing second (a close second at that) to UM, but FCS country sees it differently, with MSU finishing #5. MSU behind EWU & NAU? MSU finished ahead of NAU last year & so did SacSt. With Weber out, I see the struggle between MSU & EWU, altho the Eagles may prefer to see the struggle between them & the Griz.

I don't know how long this game will go on. It started 6/10. But, so far, FCS country rates the Griz as favorites for the NC by a large margin.

D2,

Just a quick comment on your player rankings, as it relates to possible BSC rankings. I would take that with a major grain of salt, especially coming from Rehac. 1) He knows about as much about football as I do tennis. 2) He is heavily skewed to the scats, though he tries to mask it in his writing. Anyone from Billings knows Greg is a catfan. He is one of these sportswriters that tries really hard to create a competitive rivalry that just isn't there.

None-the-less, that is a fun way to analyze it for discussion.

David2:

The current incarnation of this game at championshipsubdivision.com is a reenactment of a similar game played last year at anygivensaturday.com. Voting has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with anyone's assessment of how that particular team will do in the upcoming season, and everything to do with how annoying posters think that particular team's fans are on that message board. Last year at anygivensaturday.com, Montana was eliminated early, mainly because of the ant-like cohesion and discipline of the North Dakota State fans. The focus then became seeing whether everyone else could unite to eliminate North Dakota State. It probably belongs on the smack board rather than the main board. In fact, I think it was on the smack board at AGS. Moreover, Montana is leading at this point because championshipsubdivision.com is one of a family of message boards run by our very own Chris, owner and administrator of eGriz, with the consequence that Griz fans vastly outnumber fans of any other program there.

The point is, it's a game, not a poll.

I agree, Rachac tries to create/maintain that competitive Cat/Griz rivalry. His job is to help sell papers. Also consider why the Billings Gazette seems to give the Cats more credence than their on field performance warrants; The Billings Gazette sells newspapers in Bozeman, it does not sell them Missoula. Bottom line, don't lose any sleep over a little extra Cat ink. Grizzly wins generate more than enough to overcome the coverage MSU has received and will continue to get.

It's a "just for fun" game that's going on. Nothing more, nothing less.
Yet, and yet. Aren't these people with their pluses & minuses laying some kind of odds, much like in Vegas? I confess I'm ignorant of these past games, as well as how the Vegas wise-guys develop their odds. Aren't all these political polls games? Aren't elections even games? Pluses and minuses. Ok, ok. Maybe there are games and then there are GAMES. I guess I couldn't tell the difference.

I think your reading way to deep into this, no need to compare it to an election.

Thinking about it, I'm just playing a game, too, but it's fun speculating, however inaccurately. I suppose it's best to wait until the coaches' polls come out for a more accurate read on how the BSC might finish.

Nothing pre-season really counts, IMO.

I hear what you say. Yet, preseason rankings, polls, speculation, go on, & as grizatwork said, "What fun would a message board be without unfettered enthusiasm and rampant speculation?" What else is there to do until the games begin & even then there's going to be endless analysis of the last game and speculation about the next game? Grizatwork is right and he sums up the most valuable aspect of this board.

Eating crow doesn't have to be that bad. (I wish.) As others have told me on this board, but not said in so many words, is that this game is simply a cheerleading game. The latest post in this game has Liberty University at 83 points. UM comes in at 73 points. Hmmm... How do I like my crow, medium or well done?
