Bowls Are Better?

Just heard an interesting interview with the Wisconsin AD on XM 143. He is a "long-time proponent of the bowl system." He says it's not just about picking a single champion. It's about the experience of the individual player and all players, no matter which bowl they play in, when it is, or where it is, have a great experience. Then right after saying that Wisconsin plays old school smash-mouth football he turns around and says "why would you want to play in the snow in Boone or Montana when you could be playing in Pasadena or Tampa?" And best of all he thinks that most FCS coaches and players would gladly give up the playoffs to adopt a bowl system! What an imbecile. Just like every other person who defends the bowls, he is connected to a big dog school in a big dog conference that greatly benefit financially from the status quo. As an ASU fan I oppose us moving to "1A" level until the BCS goes away.
 
Well, pard, I sure would like to watch one more game at the end of the year. I guess when a guy is a fan of a team that makes the playoffs every year, he can't really consider what it would be like to make it less of the time, and how great it would be to still have a game to play in those years. Hell, I'll posit that many of the Montana Grizzly faithful sure would like to see their team play one more game this season.
 
Hmmm, I wonder if he'd like to hear from his defensive coach who was a reported finalist for the Griz HC job on why on earth he'd rather be at Montana than preparing for the Tidy Bowl in Tucson.

Pasadena my ass. That guy ever been to Pasadena? What's so great about Pasadena? Takes 90 minutes to get there from anywhere else in LA and longer than that to get out. I ate a surprisingly good bagel there. Can't say much else for it. I'd rather be in Madison ANY day of the calendar year. Period. Madison kicks ass. LA is a cesspool. He needs to leave his office more.
 
As a Griz fan, not making the playoff field this year definitely sucks. On the other hand, over the last 20 or so years we've played so many other teams from around the country and become familiar with so many fanbases. That makes a year like this still pretty fun. Watching the bobcats get annihalated at home as a seeded team was...special. Now we can root for the Big Sky Conf. representative (EWU). Should they go down, we move our allegiance to App. St. (or at least that's how it is for me).

Yes, after my abysmal "dark horse" pick for William and Mary to win it all, I will pull for Appy if EWU loses, so I think you are right, many on this board will root for ASU.

I refer you to the Sports Illustrated article about 4 issues ago promoting a playoff and denegrating the bowl system. Sorry I gave my copy away so I can't quote directly. Essentially the article states that ADs keep crying for more and more bowls depite the fact that ALL schools lose money in bowl games after sharing their bowl payoffs with other schools in their conference and paying for tickets and expenses for bands etc., plus other expenses. The only people making big money are the bowl administrators and the bowls themselves. The Michigan AD stated the best thing about having a sucky team the past two years is all the money they saved by not going bowling. Rose Bowl champ Ohio State got a 18 million dollar payout; after expenses and sharing with other Big 10 schools, they ended up losing $80,000.

It depends on your point of view. I'm a huge proponent of a playoff system and always thought the "meaningless" bowls were a joke.
That said, a few years ago I found myself in El Paso for the holidays with my girlfriend and her family -- Arizona State was in town for the Sun Bowl, and since my g/friends family were ASU alum, I got to witness first hand the pregame buildup to the game, and I have to admit, it was pretty fucking impressive. A week of parades, rib eating contest between offensive lines, alumni games, drinking contests between rival fraternities. The entire city had become an ASU/Purdue convention.
As for the game, even though Purdue lost I doubt many of their supporters left unhappy, so I can totally understand what the Wisconsin AD means when he talks about the "experience" factor of the bowls.

Oh, by the way, I would still rather see a playoff system. But one of these days your Griz might win the WAC title and you'll find yourselves driving or flying to a bowl game. You might change your tune. (unless, of course, it's the Humanitarian Bowl -- Boise in December? Fuck that)

The interesting thing to me is that lost in all of the Bowl/Playoff chatter is the fact the NCAA has a division 1 playoff. As most of us know, last year Villanova won.
 
So, 34 bowl games X 2 = 68 FBS teams versus 20 FCS playoff teams...Whether you're talking FBS or FCS, NCAA D-1 football is becoming more like the progressive's love with giving every team a shiny trophy just for participating.

One more game? I got to go to 4 more games at the end of the season last year and I have to say I liked all of them except for the outcome of the last one.

That is what I have tried to say in many of the "move up" discussions. Apart from every other arguement for moving up or staying put.....the ascertion that Griz fans would not follow the Griz to a bowl game was absurb to me. Just because it would not be a playoff game doesn't mean that the atmosphere and experience would be terrible and not worth attending. I think the Griz fans would show up in force any time, anywhere, to watch the Griz play...........even for a meaningless bowl trophy.

I tend to agree. Maybe not just any "meaningless" bowl or opponent, but almost certainly for most.

that is good advise. there have been times were i wished i had done that insted of riting to fast.
