2013 Griz verbals
The following players have committed to play football at the University of Montana in 2013:
Mick Delaney, 6-0, 185, WR/S, Bozeman.
Treshawn Favors, 5-9, 185, RB, Glendale, Ariz.
Nico Graham, 5-10, 175, WR, Missoula.
Josh Janssen, 6-0, 185, WR, Missoula.
John Nguyen, 5-8, 187, RB, Bellevue, Wash.
Chris Parker, 6-0, 185, CB-KR, Sioux Falls, S.D.
Marq Rogers, 6-4, 181, WR, Fort Wayne, Ind.
Marquin Russell, 6-0, 185, CB/WR, Lakewood, Wash.
Tucker Schye, 6-4, 215, LB, Malta.
Makena Simis, 6-2, 195, QB, Boise, Idaho.
Travon Van, 5-11, 195, RB, San Diego (transfer from Marshall).
Treshawn Favors didn’t know a lot about the Montana Grizzlies when they contacted him about playing football, but his offensive coordinator did.
Austin Martin, an assistant at Mountain Ridge High School in Glendale, Ariz., has made a couple trips to Missoula as a member of the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks.
“I’m pretty familiar, having traveled there twice, with what a top-notch program he’s getting into,” said Martin, a defensive back for NAU from 2005-06 before a pair of knee injuries ended his playing career. “I was very excited for him.”
Favors, a 5-foot-9, 185-pound running back, confirmed Wednesday that he’ll be joining the Grizzlies this fall. He made his verbal commitment Dec. 28; he visited UM the weekend of Nov. 30, and also made a trip to North Dakota State.
“I just liked the environment,” the senior, who ran for 1,065 yards and 12 touchdowns this past season for the Mountain Ridge Mountain Lions, said of UM. “Everyone’s just big about football, and it had just a ‘home’ feel.”
Martin feels the Griz uncovered a diamond in a player who missed much of his junior season with a shoulder injury. Favors ran for 411 yards in four games in 2011.
“Had Tre played his entire junior year, he would probably be playing at a bigger school,” Martin said. “He probably slipped through the radar a little bit, playing only four games his junior year, and we weren’t able to capitalize on his talents when he was able to play.”
Favors came back strong as a senior, putting together four 100-yard games for a team that finished 5-5. In his third game he had 25 carries for 207 yards and three touchdowns in a 52-22 win over Phoenix North Canyon.
Favors also had 14 receptions for 182 yards and three more TDs.
“He was a workhorse,” Martin said. “We ran the heck out of him, and he didn’t tap out once.
“He’s going to be a nice steal for you guys. He still ran harder than any running back in our state, and he’s a good receiver out of the backfield.”
Montana won out over several Football Championship Subdivision programs – Eastern Washington, NDSU, North Dakota, NAU, South Dakota State, UC Davis – as well as Northern Illinois.
Favors credited Griz running backs coach Justin Green and head coach Mick Delaney with his recruitment.
Delaney and his staff can’t comment on recruits until after the NCAA Division I football signing period begins, on Feb. 6.
Favors is unofficially the 11th player to commit to the Griz, and third running back – John Nguyen out of Bellevue, Wash., and Marshall University Travon Van are the others.
Montana had three senior running backs this past season: Peter Nguyen (John’s brother), Dan Moore and Caleb Walden.
Delaney has said he was looking to sign 15 or so players to the 2013 recruiting class.
