"tough" versus "dumb"

at the risk of piling it on (gotta love egriz after a loss), i figured the griz were in big trouble when somebody posted pictures of a few of them jumping in the frigging clark fork, presumably a day or two before the game. first, it showed that they were more concerned about the weather than the team they were going to play. second, doing that any time, but particularly shortly before you need your body to be at full strength, is stupid. if you or i had jumped in the river last week, i guarantee we'd be feeling it the next day, simply because it is brutal to one's body both directly, and by causing a major stress response.

additionally, the paper said something like half the griz were sleeveless during the game. i assume that includes the punt and kick return teams, because they played like they were frozen solid. this is the 21st century, and lightweight, flexible cold weather exercise gear that keeps the heat in and wicks the moisture away can be purchased very easily. cc knew this. sub-zero temperatures require the body to work very hard (expend energy) to keep itself warm. the more your body is spending energy keeping warm, the less you have for football. moreover, if you are cold (and pretending not to be), your hands lose the ability to grip, as we saw on the last first down run by the cc qb - a couple of guys easily had him, but couldn't hang on. if their hands had been functioning closer to normal, i highly doubt that run would have happened. if i were the coach of the team, every player would have been wearing sleeves, with the exception of the running backs, who would only have sleeves down to the elbow (the need to feel the ball). every player would have a football poncho, and been required to wear it on when on the sidelines. in other words, i would have done what the cc coach did. i also would have asked johnson to skip the gloves. his accuracy was not the best this season anyway, so to put an extra, unfamiliar layer on top of his hands couldn't have helped. there are ways to warm up ones hands (chemical warmers, etc) between plays. you know, like the cc qb did.

the bottom line of this novel is that you don't minimize the effects of the cold by "out toughing it". you minimize them by being smart, and wearing appropriate clothing for the endeavor you are engaged in. the advantage the griz had was several more days to find the best combination of gear to deal with the sub-zero weather and move around as naturally as possible. instead they jumped in the flippin' clark fork and came out sleeveless. it undoubtedly had an effect.

It's one thing to go sleeveless in 15-20 degree weather, but -5 with wind added is plain stupid. That Carolina coach had his team better prepared for the elements than we did and that is a shame.

They really jumped into the river the other day?? Smart..

Agree, being macho should not outweigh common sense. Remember the days when the coaches didn't want you to drink water ... though they did provide salt tablets!

Besides all that's already been said about the cold weather ... I really believe our advantage with this pretty much went away when we installed the artificial turf. It was the ice skating rink that gave us the real advantage ... back in the day.

While at the game my buddy observed the same thing, that being, the players without sleeves, no on wearing parkas and from where we sat, one heater that wasn't used much. The players stood around like they do at all games. The other sideline was the total opposite.

It only made sense that their muscles were getting cold and tight. It seemed that JJ was underthrowing many passes in the first half and it seemed reasonable that he was indeed tight from the cold.

It seemed to us that the Griz were being macho and trying to be intimidating while at the same time being very stupid. CC played loose and quick while the Griz appeared slow to react, trouble tackling (more than usual) and not in sync.

If any of this is accurate, why were the coaches not making sure they guys were staying warm and loose.

I sure hate to believe that coaches from the northwest were out smarted by coaches from the south due to arrogance or some misguided intimdation aspect of the game.

Please, someone closer to the team tell me this is all rubbish. I really want to believe you.

I spoke to the parent of a player who said that the primary reason for the loss was the CCU's coaches coaching with regard to the cold. The CCU players were ready for the cold, they had and wore parkas on the sideline, they wore long underwear under their gear, they drank warm chicken broth at halftime. Well done Chants, I hope the Grizzlies have learned a lesson.

Sadly I think you correct. I just can't imagine how standing in that kind of cold without a parka on or a heater to keep you warm was a smart thing. I am very disappointed that may have contributed to a loss that should not have happened.

And that's why we'd have been better served to have it be about 20-25 degrees and not 5 below...

I agree with everything in this thread. It was my exact thoughts seeing sleeveless linemen. It wasn't just nippy it was freaking cold with the wind. All sideline players should have had the blanket things and just a thin under layer as mentioned would have helped. I was almost afraid to post this, being from montana we are supposed to handle the cold but this was not a typical December temp for Missoula.

I hope this puts to bed once and for all the stupid thinking such as...

...nobody but a northern team can win in the cold
...our guys don't have to dress differently for it, we're tough and used to it
...they'll fold up like accordions after a few hits in that weather

There's a reason that Moglia is successful in business...he saw the problem, analyzed it, came up with the best plan he could to deal with it, and gave his players the tools they needed to deal with it and win the game.

We jumped in the Clark Fork and stood on the sidelines freezing our nuts off.

Weather did play a factor, against us.

Where is this info coming from that says we had players jumping in the river? I'm not disagreeing, just had not heard that before.

Has anybody asked the coaches? I hope someone does bring this up, as I can only agree. It made me cold just watching these guys with their arms exposed from the warmth of my living room. Some common sense lacking :(

Common Sense post!!! Agree with 100%. Blame the refs blame whoever, the bottom line is the Griz coaching staff letting those kids stand in the freezing temps with no protection was absolutely STUPID! BAD COACHES ALL AROUND!!

Only when the northwest coaches are from Butte, America.

I think this is a damned if ya do, damned if ya don't thread.

If Delaney made the team wear sleeves/parkas/whale skin etc and the outcome was still 42-35, someone would post about how soft we are because of coaching.

win or lose, not having coats and heaters in sub-zero weather was stupid. there is no "damned if you don't".
