Portland State's men's basketball team will lose two scholarships and has been banned from the conference and NCAA tournaments next season due to APR shortcomings:

I always hate it when a new coach has to pay for the sins of a past coach. On the other hand, though, the current coach was part of the old PSU staff.

Yeah, I wouldn't shed too many tears for him. He enjoyed the fruits of two conference championships and NCAA tournament appearances as a result of their recruiting practices, and inherited the head job when Bone left. The only sad thing is Bone got off scott free and is enjoying a PAC 10 job despite his recruiting practices.

From reading the article it appears that the reason for the sanctions was not recruiting violations but failure to achieve the required improvement in academics for the student athletes. It appears that the football team at PSU is also being penalized. This is the reason that Raason Young is no longer with the Grizzlies,(at least according to the Missoulian). Every school knows what the requirements are and thus if a school does not make the progress required it has to accept the consequences. This is not a coaching or recruiting violation per se but a problem with how the student athlete is monitored academically, and in PSU's case that appears to be across the board.
