Griz pick up a late player

Montana men's basketball has picked up a late signee for 2010 in Chase Adams from Bakersfield CC. Adams averaged 15 pts & 3 rbs last year for Bakersfield. Stephen F. Austin, Idaho, University of Detroit, Illinois-Chicago, Austin Peay and Cal-State Bakersfield were also recruiting him late.

He was originally heading to Air Force on a scholarship and was rated a 3 star recruit by one site and a 2 star by the another coming out of high school in Arizona. He looks like he has a lot of potential.

From Bakersfield.com (August 15):

"Bakersfield College freshman guard Chase Adams signed a scholarship with the University of Montana. The Tucson, Ariz., native averaged 16 points and four rebounds for the Renegades last season.
Adams was named All-Western State Conference honorable mention. He’ll have three years of eligibility for the Grizzlies, who qualified for the NCAA tournament last season."

Weird pick up.

I think it is a very logical pick up. Adams replaces the spot the coaches wanted Idris Lasisi to fill when he was signed in May/June. Lasisi did not qualify so they got someone else to fill his spot. At the point guard, shooting guard and small forward the Griz only have Stockton and Cherry returning next year. They signed JC's Stewart and Woods to bolster the wings but that still only gives 4 players with college experience to man the three spots. As good as the incoming freshman are if I was a college coach I would like at least one more experienced guard to help them out.

I hope this guy is a perimeter threat with consistency. Right now, that is my biggest concern with the team. It is scary at this stage, knowing our best perimeter shooters are 7 footer and a true Freshman SF, Selvig and Weisner (Tinks, please do not move this guy inside).

We will need more perimeter shooting otherwise teams will be collapsing the paint endlessly. Collapsing takes away our penetrating and kicking it inside. it also allows the opposition to not spend as much energy defending. Personnel aside, hard for me to see a more effective duo from 3 than Staudacher and AJ.

I have a feeling there will be ALOT of growing pains until conference play starts, and a few more during conference play. Right now, I see a 9-7 0r 10-6 conference record. With consistent perimeter shooting, I see 12-4 or better. I do not see any team running away from the pack this year in the conference.

88 - 115 FTM/FTA - 76.5 %

135 - 282 FGM/FGA - 47.9 %

47 - 122 3-ptm/3-pta - 38.5 %

This in 27 games played in last year.

I think this is a great pickup given school starts in another week. His stats are good. We can always use another Chase. Thanks again Mslacat for keeping us updated.

Here is a little more info on Adams

He actually never signed to play for Air Force but signed to play the Air Force Academy prep school, with the idea of after playing a year on the Air Force campus he would sign with them. Air force does this alot with kids who they feel are not ready to play right away. There seems to be some conflicting information as to whether he will have 2 or 3 years of eligibility at Montana.

He is considered to be a combo guard. He has the size and shooting skills that would lable him as a shooting guard but with strong enough ball skills he has played the point quite often.

Here is a recent eval from Anthony Ray from ArizonaPreps.com

Arizona Preps Scouting Report: As a combo guard, Adams has a strong physical frame that allows him to play both guard positions well. Adams is bigger than most point guards, and also has the strength and athleticism to compete with most shooting guards - his best position on the floor. He has a very good ability to score the basketball, which he likes to do, and is tough to defend when driving to the basket, where he is a very good finisher. His toughness as a competitor also allows for him to draw physical contact often and get to the free throw line. Adams is a solid ball handler and a good scorer in transition, where he likes to push the ball and finish plays. A solid passer, Adams sees the floor well, although he has much more of a scorer's mentality. Defensively, Adams can guard either guard position. He has solid lateral quickness and competes at a high level of intensity on both ends of the floor.

Out of high school he averaged 21 points, 2 assists, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals while shooting 47% from the field and 32% from the freethrow line.

Wow, he must have practiced free throws at Bakersfield.
 Oops that should read 32% from 3 point range. He was 72% from the Free throw line :thumb:
