As much i hate to accept it, this season is over. (Now I will be void of GRIZ sports for the next 4 plus months.) Anyway, this is a time to reflect on this season and analyze next season.

This Season: Really was a mixed bag, and if it were Texas Hold EM, The GRIZ hit runner runner on the Turn and the River, and got beat by a slightly better hand, which ended an incredible season. We witnessed the best scoring performance in years, and better yet, by one of our own. We got national attention, and people nationally know who Montana is now. We played toe to toe with a couple Top 10 to 25 programs (WA and NM). We seen a team mature and grow one step at a time. We witnessed a coach and a few young players coming of age and beginning to blossom. We have recruited argueably our most talented class, with 1 scholarship to use still. We got a few more fans back, that will support this team from the get go next season, and few more sitting on the fence. Basically, this year's team is the team that should go down as the team that got the train back on the track and made the right turns.

As for what/who is leaving us, our Sr's deserve recognition and thanks for their time and efforts.

(1) Vassy Banny- This is the 1 guy that was the ultimate team player and most unselfish player I have seen at Montana in years. I will never forget his positive attitude, hustle, and heart. I am a firm believer, every team HS on needs 1 of these guys every year. Banny is a rarity in terms of willingness to sacrifice for the teams that always brought hard work and attitude, which is contagious for team morale. Banny in my eyes, if this program goes to where it should, I really would love to have some team award, game to game, week to week, or year to year to honor your attitude and hustle (I am serious on that). In the future, when Tinkle talks about position and rebounding, you are the example he should use every damn time.

(2) Jack McGillis- This is the hardest one for me to summarize. I should just apply everything stated regarding Banny. From a coaching standpoint, what you brought to the table is hard for the average fan to appreciate or understand. Like Banny, I hope every future GRIZ knows how important heart, hustle, and attitude is in making for a successful team and successful life (which I know you will be successful). FWIW, I feel Jack would have went out much better had he played his natural 3/SF position every minute. He was willing to play 4 out of necessity, but he worked so hard there it took away from his game. I wish we had more depth and health at the 4 and 5 this year, because McGillis would have been seen in a much different and light to end his career.

(3) Ryan Staudacher- On the court, the best pure shooter I have ever seen. A player I think coaches should use in a fundamental shooting video. I just wish the GRIZ would have figured out sooner how to take advanatage of his shooting sooner. I wish his career would have ended with him having a good shooting perimeter game. I hope Tinkle finds more pure shooters, intelligent, and good attitude players like Stauds. I have a feeling Tinkle learned a lot this season in utilizing good 3 point shooters. Defensively, Stauds was often assigned the opposing teams best perimeter shooter, and more often than not, Stauds was always in position and in their jock. Ryan will be the shooter I will measure all future perimeter shooters against. For me he raised the bar for pure shooting. Good luck to Ryan in marriage and a future career. BTW, I would love to see you coach one day.

(4) Anthony Johnson- 1st of all, I wish I could have gotten to know him better away from the court, but I have heard many good things about him and Shaunte off the court. I have feeling this kid will be a story for years to come, not only in GRIZ lore, but an example for many struggling young adults to have hope, thanks to AJ's story. AJ regardless of where basketball takes you, your biggest impact will be off the court by the example you have become. In GRIZ lore, your future will be followed to the likes of Dave Dickenson and Larry Krystkowiak, so be mindful of that, like it or not, you will always be in the spotlight by GRIZNATION and all the BSC now. AJ your leadership and offensive ablilities are off the charts, and thanks in advance for prepping our new leaders (Cherry and Selvig). They have learned all about leadership from you, and with you leaving, I have no doubts we have leaders to follow your footsteps. So unlike when Criswell and Matthews graduated. AJ, you have supplied GRIZNATION with memories that will stick with all us for a lifetime. Too bad we only had you here for 2 years, but what a 2 years they were. The biggest challenge for next year is finding offense with your departure. AJ, I hope you get a chance to give all our young players advice for years to come, no matter where you are at. AJ, I hope you truely embrace being the new ambassador of the new generation of GRIZ basketball. I believe you will.

Finally, to every Sr and their families. You will all be remembered, and "Thank you" for everything.

As for Coach Tinkle, What a turnaround. Some of us had faith in you from the get go, but a few too many were critical of you as the man here. Well Tinks, Congratulations, you have gained much support and many more believe in the program and it's direction again. I have always and always will support you as coach, despite of being critical at times. I am impressed with your willingness to make minor changes with personnel, such as utilization of Cherry and Selvig as the year progressed. The in game strategy were great this year. This year though, you and your staff took charge 100% when things were not looking good, and when times were toughest. I was not there to witness what went on behind the scenes, but I have a feeling collectively everyone had "enough". It appears to me everyone demanded something from everyone and stopped settling.

All I know is throughout the season I was seen things that needed changed in many ways. Every damn one of them, you too seen and changed for the better. FWIW, as minor as it might be to many, the highlight of the season for me was the UNC game, when out of the gates we ran Stauds through 3 screens, combined with disciplinary action on Cherry. From that point on, I had faith the season had just turned around and headed in the right direction. That was the point I had started to believe Tinkle arrived as a coach, and we had hope for a great season.

As it turned out this season turned out to end on a high note, but do hope every returning player realizes it was not NM that ended our season early. It was losses to ISU, EWU, MSU (2x's), and a stolen game at Washington that caused us a much better tourney seeding. We should have had at worse 3 more victories this season. Winning those games would have gotten us a 11 seed at worse. My point being, never ever lose focus or take any team for granted next season. I will soon post my analysis for the future and next season.

Thank for a great year guys. I am amped for next year already. :thumb:

This sucks, one day after the season ends, the basketball forum is already dead. I was hoping the end of the season would create more basketball posts at the very least.

just watching the other games big guy...don't worry, the Griz earned a few fans back, and if they get out of the gate fast next year maybe we can get back to 1992 dahlberg arena. (my earliest recollection)

As for Tinkle, my biggest criticism of him in his early years was that I thought he was too friendly with the players. I still don't believe that players should be calling him "tinks", seems hard to be the asshole when you have to be. Other than that, last night's game gave me high hopes for him. Obviously he knows his basketball, been doing it his whole life, but could he coach it. I give him a big fat thumbs up for strategy last night. When they started out slowing it down like that, I thought to myself "they are going to have to shoot an unreal percentage to win this game" and they almost did. And I was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo happy to see some structure to the offense last night, it actually looked schemed. To keep it short, I was impressed with Coach Tinkle last night. Now he needs to build on it.

Well you said it pretty much perfect. Thanks to all the seniors your services are greatly appreciated. I am already borderline uncontrolably excited for next year, cant wait for recruiting season to pick up and very intrigued by who we may be able to bring into the fold. Myself i am hoping for somebody we will be able to count on to score early on, preferably a juco 2 guard or a post player. I would really prefer to redshirt Reader and i saw Weisner said he planned to redshirt. An athletic scoring juco big could really help with our depth and allow us to redshirt those 2. Or a guard that we can go to for buckets and relieve the pressure on our interior so we can get BQ going. I really hope we run our offense through him and to a bigger extent Derek as his skill set is so versitle and he is so dangerous from so many spots on the floor. Oh and his court vision never ceases to amaze me. Pretty sure Kareem and vaughn will be to good to keep off the court starters or not they will get their minutes.

GO GRIZ!!!

Well said. Those silly losses during the season do come back to bite you in the seedings. That's why EVERY game is important. My concern about next year is the lack of experienced guard leadership that AJ has provided these last 2 years. Hopefully Cherry will mature or another will step up to fill the void. It turned out to be a terrific ending to the season. One play at the right time could have been the difference. That's pretty close so I can't bitch. We got 3 great efforts to finish the season. Next year.............who knows?

Go Griz!!!

One little thing I liked..
Selvig and Stockton working together- I think these two have practiced so much together for 2 years that they are like brothers and know where each other will be at all times. Tinkle called the plays for them at key times in several games resulting in a couple easy buckets. These points made a difference in wins and losses and give me confidence for next year. Whlie not as athletic , I think Stockton is going to have a ton of assists and be just fine at PG.

Thanks seniors you have been great, and what a season. AJ amazing!!!! Its always the little things that come back later and bite you. Those little lost games all added up, and made our journey much harder. Tinks really coached great this year. I loved our zone it gave people fits all year, and it was also as nice to see us finally use a little pressure D as well. I only question how and why he uses his guys like he does. I still dont understand why Banny was not starting the second half of the season in place of a struggling Jack M. Jack's confidence was lost at the mid pnt of season, and he probably would have helped us more coming off the bench. I wonder about why Young didnt see more minutes? He treated Young alot like he did Chavez years back. They both are/were incredible Bball players, but made mistakes and got yanked out of games so fast that you didnt even see them leave the court. They both needed to be able to make things happen and were not able to. Its sucks that we are so guard heavy because I love what Stockton does. He is a tough gritty player. I hope he stays with us, even though we are bringing in more stud guards? He will eventually see time, but more important he is a very important practice player as was the rest of the bench! We need to find another 7 footer to replace Qvale after next year. Great season coach Tinks and Griz!!!! Next year starters Cherry, Autry, Kareem, Selvig, and the big Q. People better get out of our way, cause we still have Taylor, Young, Ward, Stockton, and the rest of the gang to make some noise!!!!

random thoughts:

--the new mexico loss still stings. there are good moments in life and bad moments, and sadly there are moments that just drift off into oblivion, lost forever. but then there are the incandescent moments that light up your memory for life, and when they happen, you need to seize them. against new mexico, we didn't. in a one-bid conference, it's tough enough to make the big dance, then the best you're gonna draw is a five-seed--a very tough opponent. to be down by one with just a few moments left, and lose, is just tough to take--especially when we squandered so many chances. a moment lost.

--but remember, we are playing here against the best in the country, not some sub-lower-under division as football, where you can thump your chest for beating up on smaller schools. i love to see us playing against the best. the greater the challenge, the greater the reward.

--qvale remains a mystery to me. the qvale you saw against new mexico is the very same guy i saw at oregon (and two nights later at washington)--the most dominant big man on the court. where he went for the regular season, i don't know. maybe he just plays up to good competition, and down to mediocre.

--terrible decision three years ago not to redshirt qvale. his freshman year was pretty much lost to injury and inexperience. think where we'd be if both qvale and selvig had two years left.

--poor jack mcgillis. i'm glad he got the start against new mexico, because he's a loyal montana kid and he's paid his dues. but the kid who once hit for 26 for oregon state against cal just seemed lost out there, smaller than life, as when he simply fell down coming to meet a pass. i don't think i've ever seen that before. krysko took a lot of heat for not recruiting him out of high school, but i believe his judgment was confirmed.

--the thing you notice about the big dance (and hear ad nauseum from the experts) is the importance of guard play. seems every top team has one or two super-quick guards that just take your breath away with their quickness and speed. this is what has plauged both the lady griz and the men at prior big dances, when we had kids like blaine taylor or the kid from missoula who was backup when we played oregon at the big dance in the early aughts. but not this year, not with cherry and johnson. i've heard autry is super-quick too, let's hope. and i question whether stockton is quick enough to play at the top level.

--finally, can anybody tell me whether our game was on national tv in the final moments? i know there was an o/t game going on back east, just wondering if they cut back to our game in time. national exposure be good; no disgrace in this loss.

Great comments about the departing seniors, I'll miss all of the guys that graduate this year and mtgriz you put it really well about all of them. I had the opportunity to meet AJ and Stauds at a networking thing put on by the athletics dept and the GSA, they're great guys, I was really impressed with how even as junior basketball players (this took place last year) they were planning their future after college and talking about where they want to go in life. Excellent dudes, and I wish them, and Jack and Vassy all the best.

MTGR-As always I enjoy reading your bball posts. This is no exception. However, I have two disagreements with your points. First, the more Jack played, the more Jack showed he was not a SF (3). I love his grit, his heart, his determination, but he just did not have the shooting ability that he showed in HS for whatever reason. He was a shorter 4 in my opinion.
Second, you say that 3 more wins would have resulted with no less than a 11 seed. There is no way this season the BSC would have had an 11 seed. The field is so balanced this year that a BSC team, despite our knowledge of how good they are, will never garner that much national respect. Back when we played FSU we had maybe 5 losses total and there were better teams in the BSC, still no high seed. The only year UM has received much for respect was when we played UNR as a 12. Next year if we make it and the BSC has a respectable year, we may see a 12 seed if we have less than 7 losses. The only way we ever have enough respect to receive an 11 or lower seed is by beating PAC 10 and MWC teams and being ranked in the Mid-Major Poll top 10. UNI is ranked 2 right now and they were a 9 seed, and they come from a tougher conference.

this is true. mtgrizrule has written "war and peace" on this board. i've written "the idiot."

I like breaking down basketball, just like remax does football. Either you do not read the long ones, or I go generic. Sorry for the length. For the most part though, I feel a lot of what I post in GRIZ basketball is accurate. It is hard to summarize any team by being short and sweet.

I guess everyone should just keep it to. The GRIZ will win or the GRIZ will lose without any reasoning. After game we can all just repeatedly post the GRIZ lost or the GRIZ won. I like breaking down the GRIZ, and even a few egrizzers appreciate the posts.

ha! very funny. i will echo is thanks to AJ for making this the most interesting basketball season in recent memory, although I think all the publicity was double edged. And to Tinkle, of whom I may have been his harshest critic, I'm glad you are growing with the position you were given. I now think you are a sound D-1 coach.

now moving forward I think we all saw the future of griz hoops. Qvale and selvig pack the scarieist 4-5 maybe in the nation next year. Will Cherry, take notes.. the big men have arrived.. the next 2 years are up to you, play big and for god sakes get your buddy kareem on campus next year and we are sweet 16 bound.... giddy up
