A blurb in an article about Bomar going to SHSU:
Quarterback Rhett Bomar, who was dismissed from the Oklahoma football team for receiving extra compensation from jobs at a private business, is transferring to Sam Houston State University, an N.C.A.A. Division I-AA program in Huntsville, Tex....

...Sam Houston State, which has an enrollment of 15,300, is located 70 miles north of Houston and competes in the seven-team Southland Conference. Classes began Aug. 21.

Bomar did not answer a message left on his cellphone this morning. He was believed to also be considering Stephen F. Austin before choosing Sam Houston State.

Oklahoma Coach Bob Stoops dismissed Bomar and offensive lineman J.D. Quinn, both starters, on Aug. 2.

The university’s investigation revealed that they knowingly broke N.C.A.A. rules by being paid for work not performed at Big Red Sports/Imports, a car dealership in Norman, Okla.

Both players were declared ineligible by Oklahoma. J..D. Quinn will attend Montana.

Bomar transfers to Sam Houston State

By George Schroeder
The Oklahoman

NORMAN -- Rhett Bomar chose the lesser risk. The former Oklahoma quarterback enrolled Monday at Sam Houston State, a move that could get him back on the field more quickly.

Former OU lineman J.D. Quinn has chosen a similar route, transferring to Montana. Both are NCAA Division I-AA schools.

Bomar did not return a telephone call Monday. Jerry Bomar, Rhett's father, declined comment, saying only that his son was "ready to move on.'' But last week, Jerry Bomar had acknowledged his son's dilemma after he was declared ineligible by OU and dismissed from the team for NCAA rules violations.

Rhett Bomar had also considered Houston, a Division I-A school. But if he had transferred to a I-A school, he would have to sit out the 2006 season per NCAA rules. And Jerry Bomar believed it was likely the NCAA would have forced Rhett Bomar to serve a suspension of undetermined length during the 2007 season.

By contrast, NCAA transfer rules allow a player to be immediately eligible when transferring to a lower-division school. Although Rhett Bomar is ineligible because of the NCAA rules violations, he would be eligible as soon as any suspension was determined and served.

"We've got to figure out what's the best way to go for the amount of time,'' Jerry Bomar said last week. "You don't know what the punishment's gonna be.''

The punishment is still unknown, but a spokesman for Sam Houston State said the school had begun the process of petitioning the NCAA for Bomar's reinstatement.

"We're starting the steps,'' sports information director Paul Ridings said. "The first thing is to find out when he can start practicing.''

Ridings said Bomar was in Huntsville on Monday and was expected to begin classes Tuesday. In a statement released by Sam Houston State, the school's athletic director Bobby Williams called Bomar's situation "unique.''

"There is no exact timeline for how long this process will take,'' Williams said in the statement, "but we will do everything possible to expedite the procedure.''

Bomar was overpaid between $5,000 and $7,000, according to his father, for hours he did not work at Big Red Sports and Imports. Quinn was overpaid a similar amount.

In similar cases, athletes have been required to make restitution as well as serve suspensions.

"We're happy to welcome Rhett as a Bearkat,'' Sam Houston State coach Todd Whitten said in the statement. "He is a good student and a good athlete and we are glad to have him here in the program.''

Let's see, I've been told he'll have to serve a 5 game suspension. Does he get to practice? Anyone know?

I read 4 different stories on this today and it is anybodys guess what the penalty will be, jut that there will be one.

Let me re-word. If he gets a suspension for let's say X number of games does he get to practice????????

Without trying to decipher the NCAA rulebook, I found an article on Maurice Clarett while he was at Ohio State. He was suspended for 6 games and was allowed to practice.

Anyone else nervous about accepting a kid who knowingly cheated the NCAA and was paid for a job he didn't perform? Seems like he could bring some attention with him.

I am thinking it would depend on his attitude about the entire situation. If he has a contrite heart about what he did, then he has learned his lesson. If he makes excuses for himself, then he will likely be trouble later too.

Surprised to see Quinn also got a DUI last fall. A DUI and then the cheating, all within the span of a year. What the hell is Bobby thinking?

NORMAN, Okla. -- An Oklahoma defensive lineman faces a misdemeanor count of driving under the influence of alcohol under the age of 21 after police here arrested him during a traffic stop.

J.D. Quinn, 19, was detained early Tuesday after police alleged he was speeding in a 25-mph speed zone and failed to stop at a stop sign, an affidavit said.

Would he have to pay back the money in question for the NCAA to clear him? I saw where Jarrett from USC had to pay money on the apartment that Leinarts dad helped with last year.

Secondly, how must Bomar feel to go from the penthouse to thwe outhouse? This guy was the highest rated QB coming out of high school two years ago and screwed it up.

Well his BAC was .03, if he was 21 he would not have been charged, so that may have had something to do with th decision.. I don't condone drinking and driving, but I would be willing to bet there is hardly a soul don this board that hasn't been at .03 at the age of 19. Every other kid Hauck has had that had any trouble was on a very short leash so I assume he is as well. BH is the one getting paid to call the shots so it is on him if the kid washes out. So far I would say BH has a darn good track record.

Fair enough, but Quinn is on the NCAA's radar after his troubles at OU. It might be time for some of the boosters to tighten up their summer job program.

0.03 is absolutely nothing. That's like 3 beers. 0.08 is the legal limit and that is pretty conservative. Lots of people get REAL DUI's. It doesn't make them bad people.

When a wealthy older booster offers a young kid extra dough, it's hard to turn down. Like I said before, you never know, this kid might come from a poor family. I'm guessing that about 2 percent of this kind of cases are actually discovered and punished.

It's a bummer that people have been talking about our O-line as our achilles heel since March, and then a guy who was probably going to start at a top 5 I-A school drops in, and people can only really talk about his mistakes.

OU dismissed him from the team. It is fair game to discuss why he was let go.

I think he was thinking that a stud guard wanted to be a Griz and maybe help us get to Chattanooga this year or the next. But enough about that. Back to "discussing why he was let go."

NW,

I think TF was referring to your shot at Hauck. I have seen a lot more suspect tranfers welcomed with open arms at other istitutions. I agree with your comment on the NCAA, but don't hold your breathe. The NCAA isn't going to do much unless you give thema reason to go after you, they are a business and run it as such. There is no way that Stoops didn't know about what was happening at Oklanhoma, but the NCAA won't be doing anything because the kids and a booster are going to take the hit. :twocents:

I'm glad this kid is a Griz.

If you think that kids in the BS are not taken care of your friggin nuts. As for a DUI, that has me concerned but hopefully it does not happen again. Give the kid a break; I would say that most everyone on this board has operated a vehicle while having more than the legal limit. Thank god no one was hurt and hopefully this young man has learned a valuable life lesson.

There's been a few times where the little white line helped me home, but I sure as HELL don't condone it, nor do I do it anymore. Things happen when you're young and hopefully you learn from it and get older in order to pass on your experience, hopefully in a productive and positive fashion. So DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE!!! Unless you're a nerd and just playin Xbox....

At least they're taking responsibility for their actions. Rather refreshing...

Thanks for the link, Grizlurk.

Anyone else think JD Quinn looks a little bit like Dylan McFarland in that clip?
