2018 MT HS Football Season

Class AA

1.) Bozeman (8-0)
2.) Billings West (7-1)
3.) Helena High (6-2)
4.) Kalispell Flathead (6-2)
5.) Billings Senior (6-2)
6.) Missoula Sentinel (4-4)
7.) Butte (3-5)
8.) Great Falls High (4-4)
9.) Kalispell Glacier (3-5)
10.) Helena Capital (3-5)

Game(s) of the Week: https://montanasports.com/high-school/football/2018/10/17/montana-high-school-football-playoffs-berths-decided-seeds-to-be-determined/

Player(s) of the Week (#8): WR Jesse Owens (Billings West) - 10 catches for 248 yards and 3 touchdowns (vs. Missoula Sentinel); RB Blake Counts (Kalispell Flathead) - 24 rushes for 217 yards and touchdown along with 2 catches for 67 yards with a touchdown (vs. CMR)

Special Note: Jesse is one of the true game changers in the state who can go the distance when he gets the ball or, at least, get chuck yards after the catch. He leads AA in receiving and is a major part of why Billings West is 7-1 heading into Week 9. Meanwhile, Blake Counts took down Lex Hilliard's single season Flathead rushing record with 217 rushing yards to put him 1555 rushing yards on the season. Counts has been one, if not the best, running back in the state all year (I've ranked Joe Olsen ahead of him at the position...like that matters). He can also change games and put his team on his back in crunch-time. He has a real shot of going over 2,000 rushing yards on the season, breaking Andrew Grinde's AA rushing record (2180 yards), and possibly breaking Cut Bank native Jarett Laden's all-class record of 2387 yards set back in 2000.

Class A

1.) Hamilton (8-0)
2.) Billings Central (8-0)
3.) Columbia Falls (7-1)
4.) Dillon (6-1)
5.) Frenchtown (6-2)
6.) Laurel (7-1)
7.) Lewistown (6-2)
8.) Whitefish (5-3)
9.) Belgrade (5-3)
10.) Miles City (5-3)

Game(s) of the Week: https://montanasports.com/high-school/football/2018/10/17/montana-high-school-football-playoffs-berths-decided-seeds-to-be-determined/

Player(s) of the Week (#8): QB Carson Rostad (Hamilton) - 447 total yards (237 passing/210 rushing) for 6 total touchdowns (4 passing/2 rushing) and led the team in tackles on defense (vs. Frenchtown); RB/LB Colten McPhee (Columbia Falls) - 340 rushing yards on 38 carries for 5 rushing touchdowns and 17 tackles on defense (vs. Whitefish); OL/DL Marcus Wehr (Billings Central) - 7 solo tackles (4 TFLs), 3 sacks, and his OL plowed the way for 330 rushing yards at a 7.7 per rush clip (vs. Lewistown)

Special Note: Junior QB Carson Rostad is arguably the top overall player in the state of Montana with maybe of the exception of Bozeman sophomore Kenneth Eiden IV (he currently has 31 TFLs/16 sacks on the season as a DE). As a dual-threat QB prospect, he has perfect size, arm strength, running ability, and smarts to be considered a top prospect at the position. He is also one hell of a safety. RB/LB Colten McPhee is a 5'10", 205 lb. kid who can dominate a football game on both sides of the ball. Columbia Falls also has one of the best OL's in the state but Colten is a freight train with the ball in his hands. He's also an excellent MLB and possibly the best one in the state. He currently has 29 total touchdowns on the season. Finally, I needed to at least mention Marcus Wehr from Billings Central. The 6'3", 220 lb. defensive lineman balled out against Lewistown in a huge Eastern A conference game. He is great against the run, flashes pass rush ability, and has the perfect body structure to make a productive strong-side DE in college. Marcus could also become an offensive lineman if he adds weight on to his frame at the next level.

Class B

1.) Fairfield (7-0)
2.) Roundup (7-0)
3.) Colstrip (7-1)
4.) Missoula Loyola (7-1)
5.) Bigfork (6-1)
6.) Big Timber (6-1)
7.) Eureka (6-2)
8.) Florence (6-2)
9.) Huntley Project (5-2)
10.) Manhattan (4-3)

Game(s) of the Week: https://montanasports.com/high-school/football/2018/10/17/montana-high-school-football-playoffs-berths-decided-seeds-to-be-determined/

Player(s) of the Week (#8): QB/LB Brody Grebe (Roundup) - 5 total touchdowns (3 rushing/2 passing) (vs. Shepherd)

Special Note: Brody has had a Garrett-Graves-2017 type season for the Roundup Panthers in terms of his willingness to put his team on his back every Friday night. He plays with max effort (because he doesn't know any other way) on offense as the Panthers call his number a ton on QB draws. On defense, he may have the best instincts of any linebacker in the state (Ryan Tirrell and Colten McPhee are up there as well). Brody also has an interesting recruiting choice ahead of him as he wants to be an engineer and he holds FCS football offers from the Griz and Cats (Griz have offered more) along with NAIA offers from nearly every in-state program. He is also drawing football interest from out-of-state programs like NDSU. As a basketball player, he has NAIA offers from nearly every in-state program. Brody also holds a full-ride rodeo offer to MSU. He also has track and field interest for his triple jumping ability. If you can, go watch the kid participate in any of these sports. It is a treat.

Class C (8-man)

1.) Drummond/Philipsburg (8-0)
2.) Fairview (8-0)
3.) Joliet (8-0)
4.) Shelby (7-0)
5.) Hobson/Moore/Judith Gap (7-1)
6.) Great Falls Central (7-1)
7.) Charlo (6-2)
8.) Culbertson (7-1)
9.) Centerville (7-1)
10.) Circle (6-2)

Game(s) of the Week: https://montanasports.com/high-school/football/2018/10/17/montana-high-school-football-playoffs-berths-decided-seeds-to-be-determined/

Player(s) of the Week (#8): RB Trey Green (Alberton/Superior) - 32 carries for 274 yards and 6 rushing touchdowns along with 31 receiving yards and 13 tackles on defense (vs. Plains); QB Alex Schriver (Fairview) - 5 total touchdowns (4 passing/1 rushing) (vs. Forsyth)

Special Note: Trey Green has Alberton/Superior (or the Clark Fork Co-Op) back in the playoffs with one week left in the regular season for 8-man. The 5'9", 200 lb. back has 1745 total offensive yards and 26 total touchdowns for a team that only lost twice (a 16-50 decision to #1 Drummond/Philipsburg and a 58-66 shootout to Charlo). Meanwhile, QB Alex Schriver has the perennial football power Fairview Warriors squarely in the conversation as one of maybe three teams that can contend with Drummond/Philipsburg in the 8-Man playoffs. The sophomore lefty has excellent throwing mechanics and a knack for escaping the pocket to run or pass for the Warriors. On offense, he forms a formidable trio of playmakers along with RB Cody Askbeck and ATH Carson Cayko. On defense, Schriver is a ballhawk who has almost 10 interceptions on the season (possibly has more...not sure on the stats). Fairview and Drummond/Philipsburg will be on opposite sides of the playoff bracket so something to watch out for come title game time.

Class C (6-man)

1.) Wibaux (7-0)
2.) Grass Range/Winnett (9-0)
3.) Geraldine/Highwood (7-1)
4.) Richey/Lambert (6-2)
5.) Hot Springs (8-1)
6.) Roy/Winifred (8-0)
7.) West Yellowstone (7-1)
8.) Jordan (6-2)
9.) Westby/Grenora (6-2)
10.) Bridger (7-2)

Game(s) of the Week: https://montanasports.com/high-school/football/2018/10/17/montana-high-school-football-playoffs-berths-decided-seeds-to-be-determined/

Player(s) of the Week (#8): QB Mac Hauck (West Yellowstone) - 6 passing touchdowns (vs. Noxon)

Special Note: West Yellowstone finished its conference schedule with a 82-72 win over Noxon. The junior signal-caller was a major part of that with his six touchdowns. Overall, his QB play has set up West Yellowstone with a Top 2 seed out of the 6-Man West conference heading into the playoffs.

Vim, what is the deal with Charlo. Heard they had to forfeit games because of inelegible players. Nothing in the local papers that I have seen.

Might force them to miss the playoffs as well. I heard the same thing you did and I don't know the situation.

Thanks Blue, however that begs the question, why would that cause a forfeit, unless they did not have enough players to compete. Interesting.

You answered your own question as they had to forfeit because they couldn't field a team.

Either they don't have enough, or most of the still eligible players are freshman. I don't believe they are even practicing right now. Most of the older players were at the party from my understanding. Supposedly, they were deciding last night to play in the playoffs or not. It really is a case of kids making a poor choice and now having to deal with the consequences.

West at Senior
A 42-21 loss against Capital doesn't bode well for Senior, as they finish the season against West next week.

We tried an Ouiji Board to contact Coach Jack Johnson tonight to find out what happened to CMR and ended up having to do 20 minutes of up-downs.

Class AA

1.) Bozeman (9-0)
2.) Billings West (8-1)
3.) Helena High (7-2)
4.) Kalispell Flathead (7-2)
5.) Billings Senior (6-3)
6.) Kalispell Glacier (4-5)
7.) Butte (4-5)
8.) Great Falls High (4-5)
9.) Helena Capital (4-5)
10.) Missoula Sentinel (4-5)

Game(s) of the Week: As you all can see, there are five 4-5 teams all vying for the final three playoff spots so here is what needs to happen for those teams. If Kalispell Glacier beats Missoula Hellgate on Thursday, they are in (have wins over Capital & GFH) and that's the simplest scenario. Butte and Great Falls High play Big Sky and CMR, respectively. Missoula Sentinel and Helena Capital play each other so that is basically a loser-out scenario. I predict Glacier will win on Thursday so there will be 2 spots available between four teams (Butte, GFH, Capital, Sentinel). Butte has wins over Sentinel & GFH and lost to Capital so if Butte wins they are in since they have beaten 2/5 teams. GFH has wins over Capital, Sentinel, and a loss to Butte so if they win they are in a pretty good spot because of there wins over Capital/Sentinel. Capital has a loss to GFH and a win over Butte. Sentinel is in the toughest shape as they lost to Butte and GFH so if Sentinel wins but Butte and GFH win, Sentinel and Capital would be the odd teams out. If Capital wins along with Butte and GFH, there would be a tiebreaker scenario (that I haven't figured out). The cleanest scenario involves Glacier, Butte, GFH, and Sentinel winning which gives Glacier, Butte, and GFH the final three seeds...I think.

Player(s) of the Week (#9): RB Preston Blain (Kalispell Glacier) - 232 rushing yards on 31 carries for 4 touchdowns (vs. Missoula Big Sky); QB Tommy Mellot (Butte) - 26/32 for 282 passing yards and 5 passing touchdowns (vs. Billings Skyview)

Special Note: Blain has only gotten better as the season goes on. His performance last Friday was his highest rushing total of the season. Blain currently is #2 in rushing yards (1397) in AA behind Blake Counts and leads AA in rushing touchdowns at 19. Tommy put together another strong performance, putting the Butte Bulldogs in a likely win-and-in scenario this Friday in their push for the AA playoffs. There have been many great performances this year from AA QB's this season and Tommy is in that group. Down the stretch, he has really started to lock in for his team, throwing for 589 yards and 9 touchdowns in his last three games. The junior will be one of the best QB prospects in the state next year.

Class A

1.) Hamilton (9-0)
2.) Billings Central (9-0)
3.) Columbia Falls (8-1)
4.) Dillon (6-2)
5.) Frenchtown (7-2)
6.) Laurel (7-2)
7.) Lewistown (7-2)
8.) Belgrade (6-3)
9.) Miles City (6-3)
tie10.) Corvallis (5-4)
tie10.) Libby (5-4) - they beat Whitefish to finish 4-1 in the Northwestern A and Whitefish finished 3-2 (5-4) overall. Regardless of all of this, Whitefish somehow made the playoffs over Libby because the Western Conferences only recognized the #1 seeds this year. The other four slots from the West were determined by Wildcards so Frenchtown and Dillon wrapped up two of them. Corvallis, Whitefish, and Libby all finished 5-4 but Corvallis beat both Whitefish and Libby so Corvallis got one of the slots. It should have been very simple: whoever won between Whitefish and Libby gets the final spot. Libby won, had a better conference record, and the same overall record over West teams (5-4) than Whitefish. But because the West didn't recognize second place teams in both conferences, the overall record determined the slots and somehow Whitefish won the "tiebreaker" over Libby. What a load of BS and I feel awful for Libby.

Player(s) of the Week (#9): QB Mitch Norslein (Lewistown) - 243 passing yards/80 rushing yards for 7 total touchdowns (4 rushing/3 passing) (vs. Glendive)

Special Note: Mitch is one of the top QB prospects in the state and he has been really good down the stretch for his team. Despite a tough loss to Billings Central two weeks ago, Mitch played very well against a really good Ram defense. He followed that performance up with a huge game against Glendive where he exploded for seven touchdowns. Mitch is currently #2 in Class A in total offensive yards behind only Hamilton QB Carson Rostad (who is arguably the best overall player in the state as a junior). Mitch is a hot commodity among NAIA programs in Montana as all want his services at QB.

Class B

1.) Fairfield (8-0)
2.) Roundup (8-0)
3.) Missoula Loyola (8-1)
4.) Bigfork (7-1)
5.) Colstrip (8-1)
6.) Big Timber (7-1)
7.) Eureka (6-2)
8.) Florence (6-3)
9.) Huntley Project (5-3)
10.) Manhattan (5-3)

Player(s) of the Week (#9): QB Tyson Racht (Townsend) - 6 total touchdowns (4 passing/2 rushing) (vs. Jefferson)

Special Note: Tyson put up a huge performance against rival Jefferson. When you play well in a rivalry game, you deserve recognition. Tyson led his Bulldogs to a #3 seed out of the Southern B conference in this week's playoffs.

Class C (8-man)

1.) Drummond/Philipsburg (9-0)
2.) Fairview (9-0)
3.) Joliet (8-0)
4.) Shelby (7-0)
5.) Hobson/Moore/Judith Gap (7-1)
6.) Great Falls Central (7-1)
7.) Culbertson (8-1)
8.) Centerville (7-1)
9.) Circle (7-2)
10.) Arlee (7-2)

Player(s) of the Week (#9): WR Jaxon Lee (Drummond/Philipsburg) - 3 receiving touchdowns and 1 punt return touchdown (vs. Victor)

Special Note: The junior wideout for the Flint-Creek Co-op has dominated all year as a WR and return specialist. Drummond/Philipsburg has not really been tested all year and they are the favorite to repeat as 8-Man champions. Jaxon impressed against top talent at football camps this past summer and he is already one of the top prospects in the 2020 Montana class.

Class C (6-man)

1.) Wibaux (8-0)
2.) Grass Range/Winnett (10-0)
3.) Geraldine/Highwood (8-1)
4.) Richey/Lambert (7-2)
5.) Hot Springs (9-1)
6.) Roy/Winifred (8-1)
7.) West Yellowstone (7-1)
8.) Jordan (7-2)
9.) Westby/Grenora (6-3)
10.) Bridger (8-2)

Player(s) of the Week (#9): QB Tel Lunde (Wibaux) - four touchdown passes (vs. Westby/Grenora); RB Zane Stahl (Grass Range/Winnett) - 200 plus yards rushing and 4 total touchdowns (3 rushing/1 passing) (vs. Roy/Winifred)

Special Note: Tel and Zane are two of the best players in 6-Man and led both of their squads to undefeated regular season records. Unfortunately, the are on the same side of the 6-Man bracket so a semifinal game could be in their future. Grass Range/Winnett also got the toughest draw of any of the #1 seeds as Westby/Grenora lost three close games to conference foes Richey/Lambert, Jordan, and Wibaux to get the #4 seed in the East. Will be interesting to see if the Thunder can pull the upset. Anyway, Tel and Zane are good football players who likely have NAIA football in their future.

I was going to ask you what you knew about the whitefish/Libby scenario once I saw the bracket. At first I wondered if whitefish paid somebody off to get in, kidding in a way but everyone knows they have money up there. Instead the last couple days I was up in libby and talked to a few of my grandfathers friends about it. They informed me it came down to the point differential between common opponent rather than the head to head and division standing like it should. Libby had a slow start in their non divisional part of the season which hurt them in the end. Either team was going to have a tough time traveling down to Dillon. Feel bad for the Loggers after having such a rough couple years, but hopefully the keep trending up. Keep those chainsaws revved up boys.

I am biased but I will gladly gargle your Vim here. Thanks!
I think those 4 TDs came on 5 touches. He’s had a couple games like that. Just a matter of getting him the ball. He had one game with 2 TDs before they even had a single offensive possession. Jax has hardly played beyond the 1st quarter. His stats don’t really do him justice. He’s a junior on a stacked team with some good seniors and those older kids are getting some touches that would likely go to Jax if needed or if on a diff team. They use him almost like a decoy; but when they have to have a play, there’s little doubt where it’s going

Yeah Flint Creek's starters have barely played a 3rd quarter. Its a lot like the really good Ennis teams a few years ago. They would wipe teams out in the 1st half then rest the starters in the 2nd. If Jaxon played for a AA team with a good QB, he would be near the top of the league in receiving.

No Missoula schools left but if you are in the Kalispell area tonight, go see Flathead play. They are a dangerous team if they can put it together. Billings West was the only team to have Bozeman on the ropes during the year and they are playing really well right now. Watch out for Kalispell Glacier as a darkhorse.

You got Circle over Shelbyville (where you can marry your cousin)? I sure hope you’re right. I do NOT want to drive to Shelbyville next week [knock on wood]. If I do, I’m driving straight thru to Sask’s house to rob his stash.
If you’re right, my guess is Cirlcle would have to come to Granite Co for the semi. [another knock on wood]
