2023 Griz Soccer thread

Griz just finished off a 3-0 win at Northern Colorado.

Maddie Ditta and Skyleigh Thompson scored their goals on penalty kicks, while Abby Gearhart added a third goal between the two PKs.

Two more regular season games left and they'll be played here in Missoula to close out their regular season schedule.

So, the Oct. 9th RPI update has the Griz dropping to 123rd after a 2 win week and sitting 8-2-3 in DI games. If I recall correctly, after non-conference Griz were 52nd. Then 66th after not playing the first week of conference. Then quickly dropped to 92nd after first Griz BSC games. Looking at the rest of the conference's RPIs, they will very likely continue to drop throughout conference even with wins. And here I was thinking around the time of the Colorado State game that if the Griz could go unbeaten and at least tie the remaining tough teams in the regular season that maybe the BSC might get an at-large bid for Montana (if they should slip up in the conference tourney). Silly me. :silly:

Rest of BSC:
206.) Idaho (7-4-2)..............................Griz beat 2-0
251.) Northern Arizona (8-3-3)
252.) Portland State (6-5-1)
291.) Idaho State (3-11-1)...................Griz beat 1-0
303.) Sacramento State (3-7-3)
316.) Weber State (0-9-3)....................Griz beat 2-1
320.) Eastern Washington (1-11-1).....Griz tied 1-1
327.) Northern Colorado (0-11-4)

Other notable RPIs:
33.) Ohio State (7-4-2)...........................Griz tied 2-2
84.) Georgia Southern (7-5-0)...............Griz lost 0-1
87.) Oregon State (3-6-4)......................Griz tied 0-0
113.) Colorado State (7-4-3).................Griz lost 0-1
138.) Utah Tech (6-4-5).........................Griz beat 4-0
148.) Oklahoma (6-7-2).........................Griz beat 1-0
234.) North Dakota State (4-5-6)..........Griz beat 3-1
255.) Miami (Ohio) (4-9-1)....................Griz beat 4-0
280.) North Dakota (3-7-4)....................Griz beat 1-0

For comparison, here's how the Griz would fit in the Mountain West conference:
92.) Utah State (7-7-1)
113.) Colorado St. (7-4-3)
116.) San Diego St. (10-2-2)
129.) Boise St. (6-2-6)
149.) New Mexico (4-4-4)
184.) San Jose St. (3-5-6)
209.) UNLV (6-4-5)
224.) Fresno St. (2-6-6)
227.) Air Force (5-7-1)
253.) Colorado Col. (2-10-1)
279.) Nevada (5-5-5)
282.) Wyoming (5-6-2)

So, the latest RPI update (through Oct. 15th) moved the Griz back up to 92nd, so I was wrong about continuing to drop. Here's the updated RPIs:

Rest of BSC:
195.) Idaho (8-4-2)..............................Griz beat 2-0
233.) Northern Arizona (8-4-3)...........Griz beat 2-1
259.) Idaho State (4-11-2)...................Griz beat 1-0
290.) Portland State (6-6-2)
304.) Weber State (0-9-5)....................Griz beat 2-1
305.) Sacramento State (3-7-5)
312.) Eastern Washington (1-12-1).....Griz tied 1-1
323.) Northern Colorado (0-12-4)........Griz beat 3-0

Other notable RPIs:
30.) Ohio State (8-5-2)..........................Griz tied 2-2
58.) Georgia Southern (9-5-0)...............Griz lost 0-1
91.) Oregon State (3-6-5)......................Griz tied 0-0
101.) Colorado State (9-4-3).................Griz lost 0-1

229.) Miami (Ohio) (5-10-1)..................Griz beat 4-0
230.) North Dakota State (4-6-6)..........Griz beat 3-1
239.) North Dakota (4-7-4)....................Griz beat 1-0

The way that game was going early (with a couple of point blank opportunities missed especially the one where their goalkeeper had gone down at the far post and left like at least 90% of an open net but the Griz forward skied the ball over the crossbar from what seemed like only 5 yards out) had me a little worried about "when you let a team hang around..."

Have a big week offensively, get named Big Sky Offensive POTW. Talk about playing "Sky High."

Newest RPI moved the Griz up to 87th. Also of note, Georgia Southern moved up to 48th, giving the Griz two top 50 opponents (Ohio State @ 32).

So realistically, what does our RPI have to be in order to have a shot at the tournament if we don't win the Big Sky? I'm not used to being a bubble team so I wouldn't know lol.

Admittedly, I don't know. I was hopeful back when UM was in the 50's but I doubt it is realistic now unless some things happen to cause the Griz to move back up to the 60's before selection time (because the tournament is 64 teams (31 conference auto bids and 33 at large bids) Source). Then again, in the scenario where the Griz lose in the conference tourney, it would probably hurt their RPI too much anyway regardless of other results.

https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/2022-rpi-and-ncaa-tournament-bracket.2122214/page-2 This has some interesting info around last year's RPIs and tournament, and noting that the seeding and RPI ranking didn't always necessarily correlate.

If I'm understanding this blog (http://rpiford1wsoccer.blogspot.com/2022/12/review-of-decisions-ncaa-d1-womens.html) right, it says Utah Valley got an at large bid last year out of the WAC (they are #61 this year but I'm not sure what they were heading into selection time last year).
For Utah Valley, with 0 Yes and 1 No standard, the No standard was the paired factor Conference Rank (#12) and Poor Results. Its poor results were tie at Boise State #155, tie at New Mexico State #67, loss at Seattle #107, and loss at New Mexico State #67. Once again, it seems likely the Committee discounted ties in relation to poor results or discounted poor conference rank (as with St. Louis in relation to its #2 seed) or discounted both. Plus, Utah Valley had a win over #20 BYU and a tie with #22 UCF.

Glimmer of hope, but then again, WAC's conference rank says it was #12...I'm assuming the Big Sky's is probably in the higher 20's...

But at this point it's just win, baby! Of course, it would be nice to switch slots with Idaho in the bracket and not have the potential of having to beat NAU again on their home field the very first game.

Why doesn't regular season champ get to host?

Short answer: because #bsc :|

But if I recall correctly, I think the conference used the excuse that the previous year's regular season champ got to host because it was easier to plan for with a year's notice (nevermind that not all teams make the tournament so that argument doesn't really hold any water).

However, when UM won in 2019 and Covid canceled the 2020 season, the Big Sky chose to have the Spring 2021 tourney in Ogden, I believe, for the reasoning of it being easier to get to during the pandemic. Okay, but then Fall 2021 comes around and the tournament is hosted at Greeley for some unknown rationale (not centrally located...in fact one of the outliers of the conference; and despite Montana being the back-to-back reigning regular season champs as well as the last tourney champ from the Spring season).

The championship was Montana’s fifth in Citowicki’s four seasons. They won the Big Sky tournament titles in 2018, spring 2021 and fall 2021, and won regular-season titles in 2019 and spring 2021, when the Big Sky was divided into two divisions.

But, yeah, if the BSC really wanted to give the best opportunity to their best representative to the NCAAs each year they should have the current regular season champ host as well as having flexible matchups (like the top seed gets whatever lowest remaining seed there is instead of a fixed bracket...although that's less important because it seems like the actual matchup of styles is more important than seeding in a lot of sports).

Maybe I misheard, but did Colter mention that the Griz got the #1 recruit in the northwest to sign recently? Maybe he was talking a different sport but I thought that's what I heard...Can't find anything about it otherwise.

Maybe meaningless at this point but the latest RPI update (through Oct. 29th) moved the Griz up to 83rd. Here's the updated RPIs:

Rest of BSC:
183.) Idaho (10-4-2)............................Griz beat 2-0

239.) North Dakota (4-7-6)....................Griz beat 1-0

Tough way to end. Worst played game I have seen from them. NAU looked ready and polished. Griz appeared to freelance with not many sets pushing forward. Solid year for coach and the girls
