MBBALL Austin Patterson Commits

Damn I kinda forgot this kid was in the portal. He’s definitely our Moody replacement as he shot 40.6% from behind the arc and he can really light it up. Averaged 9.6 ppg and had 2 pretty good games against us, scoring 14 and 16 when we played Sac. David Patrick can’t be too happy about Patterson transferring in the conference. Great pickup though!

I agree now! A big guy is a must! If I’m not mistaken I believe we still have 2 scholarships and there’s still plenty of options out there. The team is coming together nicely!

• Shot 44% from the field (113-257) and 40% from the 3-point line (63-158)
• Averaged 1.9 made 3-pointers per game

• During those eight games, he also averaged 5.4 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.9 steals per game while shooting 51% (45-89) from the field and 45% (22-49) from distance

• Averaged 10.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.7 steals over three games at the Big Sky Tournament
• Scored in double figures 14 times, and led the Hornets in scoring on eight occasions
• Pulled at least five rebounds in each of the final five games of the season"

I don't see him as a replacement for Moody. He isn't the all around player that Moody is. He is a good shooter and can help you there. Ball hadling and defence are not as good as Moody's. He may be a situational player for the Griz.

He’s a better ball handler than most think, and he’s a very tenacious but undersized defender. Huge loss for Sac.

Guards, guards, guards--small ball.
Small ball is dead!
It officially died when Karl Anthony Townes won the 2022 NBA three-point contest in record fashion.
Now bigs shoot like guards. Like Wemby. Or Chet Holmgren. Or Luka Doncic.
It's the evolution of basketball.
And I want to be on the side of evolution.
My aspirations for this program extend beyond the Big Sky.
To a win a game or two at the Big Dance.
But we can't do it until we recruit more bigs who can also shoot.
Like Dishcon Thomas.
Money be a good--very good.
But we need to get bigger!
That's the atomic and sub-atomic and galactic truth of basketball today.

You can’t teach size…

I wouldn’t be surprised if we already have a big or 2 committed. We didn’t have Johnson or Patterson on our board. The only guy that we knew of before he committed was Malik Moore. Patience

But you can recruit it.

You can recruit but it seems we always have trouble landing those recruits.
I would say every Big Sky School would have trouble landing 7 footers that play and shoot like Luka, Wemby or Chet. And guys like that are not even playing college hoops beyond a year if at all. Griz last NBA player was 40 years ago. Right now there is one former Big Sky player in the NBA. And that is Dame. So right now Griz should sign the best players that realistically will come play to Missoula. And add as many big guys that can play. Look at some recent Griz standouts..Pritchard, Kareem Jamar, Anthony Johnson, Rorie, Will Cherry, Moody etc.. all great players that might have been overlooked by bigger schools because they were an inch or 2 under what they wanted. I agree Griz need to add some big guys but if we think a bunch of 6'9 players with elite ball handing and outside shooting skills will end up in Missoula we might be a bit delusional.

Cherry played a few games for Cleveland his first year. Played withLeBron. I think his first score was an assist from LeBron, or something like that.

I did not mean to suggest that we could recruit a Wemby or Luka.
Only to point out how the game has changed.
Once upon a time, back in 2014-15, the Warriors could get by with a lineup on which Draymond Green at 6'6" was the tallest player.
A three-point shooter was thought to be a "specialist," and few other teams had even one.
The Warriors had two, both starters.
But ten years later, the NBA has adjusted. Not only by mastering the three-ball but by getting bigger.
That trend has come down to the college level.
I hope we have a big or two in mind because Money will be great.
And I have faith we can find those players.
This staff has had some big misses on the recruiting trail but overall they have shown they can recruit.
It's mostly the offense--and the mind-boggling scoring droughts--that concerns me.

Light the Beam..

City to your point, who the Griz were/are after is hopefully indicative of what they want to do.

They are after longer bigs this term, and while missing out on a more defensive centric big in Ballasager-Webb, they seem to be in the mix for some guys with real height and range. I'd love any power forward or center with some length. Of course I would take Erikstrup (my hunch he ends up at Wazzu), but Williams of Portland or Bradtke of Saint Marys fill that type of length. Do we end up with any of them? I can't tell you, but we are definitely in the market for some post length. Moreso than what I have seen the past few years anyway.

I am convinced this is how Sawyer will succeed next year. He's got a Grant Williams feel to him, but needs post spacing help and didn't get that from Oke for sure and didn't mesh well with Thomas on the floor.

I would say that size is somewhat important, but the size of their heart and determination is much more important. We all know of examples of big players who simply did not have the fight in them to be successful in D1 basketball. We are also well aware of undersized players who seem to be able to get the job done with their grit and determination.
