3-3-5 Defense Re-Visited

Now that Tim Hauck will have his footprint in our defense, will he use his many years of NFL coaching experience running the 4-3 base defense, which all of the top football teams in the NFL, FBS, and FCS use as their base defense, to sway his little brother, who never played college football, and who was never even a defensive coordinator at any level, into scrapping the gimmicky 3-3-5 defense? Asking for a friend.

Here is the definition of the 3-3-5 defense from a Google search:

"In American football, the 3–3–5 defense is a defensive alignment consisting of three down linemen, three linebackers, and five defensive backs. The 3–3–5 defense can also be referred to as the 3–3 stack or the spread defense. It is one form of the nickel defense".

So, we employ the nickel defense as our base defense. Think about that for awhile.

You guys get caught up in this "alignment" stuff way too much. Griz use multiple fronts. Last year the Griz had the best defense in terms of scoring and run defense in the Big Sky and the 3rd best in passing defense. I think maybe Bradford, Tim Hauck and Cooper forgot to use Google Search when developing their weekly defensive game plans. And by the way that big brother that didn't play college football and that you wake up every morning with a hard on for is considered the best special teams coach in FCS. Think about that for awhile.

The number two team in the FCS uses the 3-3-5 as a base defense. In fact even posters like you have mentioned that our defense is one of our strengths.

That was some kind of football analysis.

One of the two top FCS teams used the 3-3-5 last season. So all of the top FCS teams don’t use a 4 down base set.

3d obviously doesn’t watch the games, or he’d know how much the Griz chance the D.

Is 3d arguing that one has to have played the game to understand it?

A google search also shows some other coaches that never played college football.

Hugh Freeze
Mike Leach
Paul Johnson
George O’Leary
Sonny Dykes
Charlie Weiss
Bill Belichick

That’s just a small sample and yes, Bobby is also on that google search list. In fact last year, 17% of NCAA football coaches never played the game.

Yep. Our defense last season was our strength. No question about it. But I thought you were big on the O-line? Please name the #2 team in the nation who uses the 3-3-5 as a base defense

Then he should be a ST coach, and not a middle-to-lower-middle head coach. I can't recall a single play last season that we lined-up with 4 down linemen. Can you?

But they obviously were smart enough to hire a great defensive coordinator, and allow them to design their own defense, instead of dictating which defense they would run as a condition to their hiring

You forgot Marv levy. Don't miss out on any examples.

You don't have to lie to try to make your point. Bill Belichick, who was the only one of the coaches you listed to actually win anything of significance other than Marv Levy, played college football at The University of Middleton.
"Belichick attended Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, where he played center and tight end. In addition to being a member of the football team,"

Nice try. I'm not into ancient history. I think NDSU and SDSU are the current powers in FCS, and the example of fielding a defense which can win a National Championship
The most current FCS coaches poll would disagree. It far outweighs one man’s opinion.

1 SDSU
2 Montana
3 NDSU
t4 Idaho
t4 South Dakota

Tim Hauck and Cooper were not designing the defense last year. They were trying to develop a solution with their position groups to be successful under the limitations of the defense they were forced to run by their head coach. And now they are........ which led me to create this thread in the first place.

If a LB is on the line of scrimmage and the nose is in a 3 technique it is essentially an even front. Base alignments don't mean much in modern football. All teams outside of high school are multiple fronts. Everytime someone goes double tight or power formation Griz went out of a 3-3-5. 5. The Griz use multiple personel groupings depending on opponent and situation. Your argument that Griz need to change fails if your biggest concern is stopping the run. Stopped the run better than anyone in Big Sky. BTW the winnigest coach in Big Sky history is middle to lower? You are an emotional poster.
