EWU only plays one of the other teams in the preseason top 4 and thats the Griz, who they play in Cheney.

EWU returns a lot of talent, but they also have a very favorable schedule this year, the first time in about 5-6 years. Easy to understand why they are heavy preseason favorites.

Should be a great game in November between EWU and the Griz. Unlike years past, tickets will be hard to come by for this one, better get them quick when they go on sale...
Conversely, this is the worst home/road split I can ever recall for the Griz. :| :|

The Griz home/road split, conf and non-conf, is absolutely brutal this year. Griz should coast to a 6-0 record at home, but your road games are a different story. I don't think i've ever seen a Griz schedule this difficult...at least an away schedule...

I don't know that they'll "coast" to a 6-0 home record. They do have to play MSU, and they haven't beaten us at home since 2008. They may win all six games, but it won't be a cake walk.

I hear ya, but the cats have a ton of ??'s this year as you lost your best players on a 7-5 team last year. The Griz return a ton of their talent on a team that beat MSU fairly easy in Bozeman last year. No doubt MSU will be the Griz toughest home game, but MSU has a lot of holes to fill and only time will tell...

It looks bad that the Griz haven't beat the Cats at home since 2008, but what you're really saying is that the Griz lost at home to the Cats in 2010 and 2012. Now it doesn't seem quite so overstated.

I just love it when some cat fans beat their chest about the Griz not beating the Cats in Missoula since 2008. Well let's have some fun with this:

MSU's record in Missoula since 1986:
1986: L 59-28
1988: L 17-3
1990: L 35-18
1992: L 29-17
1994: L 55-20
1996: L 35-14
1998: L 28-21
2000: L 28-3
2002: W 10-7
2004: L 38-22
2006: L 13-7
2008: L 35-3
2010: W 21-16
2012: W 16-7

An astounding 3-11 record in Missoula over the last quarter century. Way to go!

Now let's take a look at MSU's Fabulous record in Bozeman since 1987:
1987: L 55-7
1989: L 17-2
1991: L 16-9
1993: L 42-30
1995: L 42-33
1997: L 27-25
1999: L 49-3
2001: L 38-27
2003: W 27-20
2005: W 16-6
2007: L 41-20
2009: L 33-19
2011: L 36-10
2013: L 28-14

Look at that homefield advantage! 2-12 since 1986!

Wow. Not much more to say.

They'll come back with something. If there's one sport MSU kicks our ass in year in and year out its mental gymnastics...

It just goes to show how weak the Big Sky really is if they have Montana State as the number 3 team in the conference, especially when they lost 3 of their best offensive players in school history..

2014 Preseason Football Polls

Coaches' Poll
Team First-Place Votes Total Points
1. Eastern Washington 12 144
2. Montana 1 130
3. Montana State 111
4. Cal Poly 108
5. Northern Arizona 100
6. Southern Utah 89
7. Sacramento State 79
8. Portland State 71
9. UC Davis 66
10. North Dakota 34
11 Weber State 30
12. Idaho State 28
13. Northern Colorado 23

Some random thoughts as I look at this:

Cal Poly could be a dark horse team to also finish undefeated in the conference. They were beat up bad by injuries last season but return a ton of talent. They have a tough defense and a hard to contain offense. They don't play EWU. Their early road games at NMSU and South Dakota St will be interesting to watch, after that they've got a very comfy looking schedule with most of the tougher games at home including Montana, Montana State the following week, Portland State, and SUU.

Sac State will be a fascinating team this year. Always a "possible" team that's never broken through, they return their entire offense, their QB is a stud - top 3 in the conference IMO. But a whole new coaching staff after their HC quit this late spring? Odd stuff. Not sure if they can re-group and be ready for this season after that.

I wonder if ISU will finally start to make some waves now that they're a few years deep in their system. Their defense was pretty bad last year, no amount of passing would over-come that... It'll be interesting to see if they can do anything. Their AD did no favors in getting this schedule set up, they play Utah and Utah State back to back. Also play Chadron and Simon Fraiser. That leaves them 8 other games and they have to play all of the projected top teams in the Big Sky

NAU... the really only return 2 starters on offense from last year? Their defense will be its usual tough way but... man... that's a lot of gaps to fill. They could have another fall-back year after a successful season last year. They've got an interesting schedule, their play-up game is against San Diego State and then they host two D-2 teams in a row and finish off with South Dakota. Their conference road-schedule is the opposite of Montana's road schedule. Playing at UNC, PSU, Weber, and UND. They host EWU, SUU, and CPSLO - and don't play UM or MSU. If I'm an NAU fan I love this schedule - the toughest games are at home.

I think Sac State takes a step back, only because of what you mentioned regarding their coaching staff. Sears proved not to be a very good head coach at Weber State.
