3-25 Montana v. Grand Canyon (4:00 pm mst) *ESPN+*

3-26 Montana v. Utah State (9:30 am mst)

Keys:
Hit.
Get improved pitching from Haegele, O'Brien and Joseph.

Same story as every other early game:

Montana 0, South Dakota 0 Top of the 4th.

1. Strong pitching through the first few innings. Haegele has been in control, just one walk over the first 3.

2. No hitting. Just two hits through three, with no other baserunners. Not a lot of K's, just nothing that is finding space

Into the Bottom of the 6th:

USD 2 Montana 1.

Haegele walked 1 batter that scored, and USD scored two runs on 1 hit.

Montana responded in the top of the 6th. Had bases loaded with no out, but only could score on a HBP.

Had a infield fly, k, before the HBP and then ended the inning with a ground out to second.

Only managed 3 hits on the day, left 6 runners on. Not again a great combo of for winning college softball games.

South Dakota 2 Montana 1 (FINAL)

Haegele completes a great outing and her best of the year so far.

6ip- 2ER 1K 4BB. Not the most impressive line, but she cut down on the walks significantly from her last few outings.

Montana had 8-9-1 for the top of the seventh and it started rather predictably:

Hardy groundout to 2nd.
Klucewich ground out to catcher

Phelps with a single to short and then advanced to 2nd to put the tying run in scoring position but Jantzi grounds out to second on a 2-0 count and that is ball game.

Montana loses again and gets only 4 hits, and only had 3 other baserunners (2BB and 1 ROE). Clearly the issue at this point is offense. They are playing good enough defense and when they get good pitching they can be competitive.

Now 0-11 on the season. Yuck.

Small Ball at the max. No one is is playing smaller ball than the Griz!

Without their best pitchers Brock and Butterfield, the Griz won't beat anyone. And even with them, the hitting is so poor, that wins are very doubtful.

Is Brock injured too now? Haegle is starting game 1 today. Do we know the extent of either Brock’s or Butterfields inj/absences?

An RBI double by Sweyer in the bottom of the 3rd vs Utah St has tied the game at 2. The Griz gave up 2 in the top of the 1st and have now buckled down and clawed back. Let’s see if they can pull this one out.

Back to back RBI doubles has given the Griz the lead.

Brock came out last Saturday after 1.1 innings. She did not pitch last Sunday, nor has she pitched in this Tourney. She is in suited up and on the bench, tho.

Joseph comes in for Haegle in the top of 5 afire a lead off walk. 3 more walks and no outs later O’Brien relives Joseph. Now 4-3 USU w/ bases loaded and no outs in the 5th.

Butterfield is going to miss a lot of the season and I think the Brock issue hopefully is limited to the weekend. Brock picked up an injury in the UNLV weekend, don't know what it is specifically, but out of an abundance of caution they held her out this weekend.

What was thought going to be a strength with Butterfield and Brock combo, has turned into a real weakness at this point.

The pitching is not good and all their athleticism and ability to play defense, isn't going to matter if they are giving up frozen ropes every where. Haegele is good for two trips through the lineup, the that third time this weekend was a killer. O'Brien just isn't good enough right now and Joseph can't locate. In the GCU game on Friday she kept missing in the middle of the zone with her off speed and any of her upper zone fastballs ended up either hip high or un-hittable.

On a good note, the offense looked a ton better as the weekend wore on. They just don't have a lot of clout and without it, they aren't going to have a ton of big innings. Sweyer and Jablonski had good weekends as they have 8 of the 15 doubles on the team and 3 of the 7 homeruns on the season.

They didn't play poorly at all this weekend, but with two true freshmen on the bump it really shows how important good pitching is. They just don't have it right now.

Is it too late to make any mid season acquisitions?

Maybe they could try an "open tryout" at the U. ;)
