Montana HS Griz Connection Question

Who's from Culbertson? Must be a pretty athletic dude I'm assuming to come from a small program. Walkon?

Cool town. Was there this last summer for a wedding.

Shane Cochran?

My bet? It will end up being Hellgate (msla cnty high), Butte, Great Falls High or which ever high school was 1st in Billings. Historically most schools like West, CMR, Sentinel ect came along as the cities grew...

My guess is Hellgate or Butte primarily from decades ago....

There use to be a freshman team called the "cubs"....in the 50's and 60's it was filled with a lot of Missoula and Butte boys that went on to be Griz under Sherbeck

My 1st game I remember was the Cubs vs Carroll in the stadium that was up against the hill, right where the Mansfield Library now sits :thumb:
The 1st in Billings was Senior, the old stadium was the original "Dornblaser" and my brother played for Coach Hal Sherbeck when it was MCHS in the Higgins ave building only.

Hellgate is not, and does not keep the records from Missoula County High School, Sentinel does. MCHS started out in the building that is now Willard, moved to the building that is now Hellgate, then moved to the building that is now Sentinel. The building that is now Hellgate closed for a while after the school moved to South Avenue, then re-opened for 9th and 10th grades, while MCHS on South Avenue remained the Sr. high school. MCHS has always been the Spartans, and when the school got too over crowded a new high school (Hellgate) was opened in the old Higgins Ave building, with a new nickname (Knights). All the old MCHS championships and trophies are at Sentinel, home of the original Spartans.

As far a Billings and West dominating High school football, when is the last time West or any AA billings team won a State football championship? 10 years ago? Seems like Great Falls and Helena have dominated high school football lately, with Bozeman and Kalispell good lately. Great Falls has always been among the best, and Butte dominated until the '70's.

This is culled from rosters going back to 2006....so, the last 10 years. Granted, some of these HS are newer, so the older HS's would rise to the top of the list if we kept going back, but over the past 10 years, this is where the players are coming from. The list includes any player from any Montana school, not judging how good they were or how long they were on the team. If they were on the roster in that year's yearbook, they're on this list:

Sentinel - 9
Big Sky - 9
Billings West - 9
Bozeman - 6
CM Russell - 6
Helena High - 5
Beaverhead County - 5
Billings Skyview - 5
Billings Senior - 5
Butte High - 5
Glacier - 4
Butte Central - 4
Loyola - 4
Hellgate - 4
Helena Capital - 3
Billings Central - 3
Choteau - 3
Drummond - 3
Fort Benton - 3
Great Falls High - 3
Colstrip - 2
Fairview - 2
Hardin - 2
Whitefish - 2
Anaconda - 1
Baker - 1
Browning - 1
Huntley Project - 1
Libby - 1
Bigfork - 1
Columbus - 1
Corvallis - 1
Culbertson - 1
Custer County - 1
Cutbank - 1
Deer Lodge - 1
Flathead High - 1
Frenchtown - 1
Havre - 1
Noxon - 1
Malta - 1
Sidney -1
Stevensville -1
Thompson Falls -1
Twin Bridges -1

How about the Montana HS that has produced the most NFL talent? Here's a few to get things started:

Anaconda
-Milan Lazetich (UM & Michigan)

Baker
-Shann Schillinger (UM)

Billings West
-Kirk Scrafford (UM)
-Mitch Donahue (Wyoming)

Bozeman
-Brock Coyle (UM)
-Dane Fletcher (MSU)
-Travis Dorsch (Purdue)
-Shane Collins (Arizona State)

Flathead (Kalispell)
-Lex Hilliard (UM)
-Dylan McFarland (UM)
-Brock Osweiler (Arizona State)
-Mike Reilly (Central Washington)
-Sam McCullum (MSU)

Great Falls High School
-Kris Heppner (UM)

I'm sure I missed a lot of the non-UM/non-MSU NFL athletes produced by MT high schools. I find it hard to believe Helena Capital wouldn't have anyone make it to the NFL with how dominant they were for awhile there. Please add or correct any that I missed.

Matt Miller from Helena Capital got a tryout with the Broncos but never got a contract, he may have been the closest one from Capital to make it.

Hellgate also had Dave kempfert and Timm Rosenbach in the NFL.
The 95 team had 5 players from Hellgate on it.

Jason Crebo - Capital High/UDFA - Buffalo Bills -- Probably would've had a decent career had it not been for an injury. Great young man.

Great post by DoubleNicks.

Don Heater from Thompson Falls played for Montana Tech from 1968-71. The St. Louis Cardinals drafted him in the 6th round. He scored a TD in a pre-season game but he was cut and never played in a regular season game.

Kerry Pribnow. Not sure where he went to high school tho.

My comment on Berg was after he hit 4/4 last sat for Tech. Kid has better range than Sullivan.

Thanks! How could I forget Matt Miller? I found an article that says he did sign an UDFA contract with the Broncos before being cut, so good enough for me to be classified as NFL-level talent.

Berg was da man! Yep, went 4 for 4, in a beating of Carroll. :thumb:

He score 12 of Tech's 19 points in a 19-10 victory.

http://www.databasefootball.com/players/player_bystate.htm?state=MT

The list shows Montana born players in the NFL: Butte and Billings tie for the lead at 7.

Don't know how accurate it is, I do know it left off Jay Fagan, Butte High, Griz (lineman 1986-1989) that played for the Washington Redskins.
