Dante a Finalist for the Buck

Congratulations Dante! Gonna be interesting to see how high he goes in the draft! Is the 3rd round out of the question?

Yep. Holmes won it in 2015 and wasn’t Big Sky
Defender of the year.
The list I have says Deon King of Norfolk State won it in 2015 ????? https://eatdrinkandsleepfootball.com/ncaa/awards/player/buck-buchanan.html
Not sure where they got their info. The STATS.com list has Holmes: http://www.fcs.football/cfb/potw.asp?week=20
STRANGE.... Wikipedia has Deon King as the winner that year as well. Wonder wht is going on with this??? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buck_Buchanan_Award
Also, my last comment on this, I don't see where GoGriz lists him winning it in his Bio on there either.... https://gogriz.com/sports/football/roster/tyrone-holmes/1716

It says right at the top of his bio STATS FCS Defensive Player of the year

AKA the Buck Buchanan Award

Apparently Deon is also skilled at internet data entry as well.
Very strange. The Wiki article mentions that STATS.com bought out The Sports Network (in 2015), but then they only reference the old Sports Network web site, which does not have the more recent awards.

If someone doesn't beat me to it, I'll fix that later. (I'm on for doing lunch right now. ;) )

If Dante doesn't get the Buck Award, I plan to picket FCS headquarters. Who's with me? Also, does anybody know where FCS headquarters are located? Thank you.

I usually don't quote myself, Sporting News has him as a 6th rounder! That would be a steal! Opinions?

There was one year where somehow/someway Stats or whoever didn't properly aquire the award names so the player of the year awards (Buck, Payton, etc.) were not those winners. Some entity controlled them for one year and they were not nationwide awards. Brint may remember more about that.

Oh, OK, silly me. We were talking about the Buck Buchanan Award, so that is what I was looking for/at. Thanks for the info, I did not know that STATS FCS Defensive Player of the Year was the exact same thing AKA the BUCK BUCHANAN AWARD.

Okay, need to pay more attention to footnotes.

According to the STATS.com web site (and the Wikipedia article), STATS bought out The Sports Network (TSN) in February 2015. However (a guess here), it probably took some time for the TSN operation to be fully integrated into STATS. So TSN proceeded to selected a Buchanan Award winner for 2015. The current STATS list I looked at, and linked, shows two names for 2015, including Holmes*. The footnote for the asterisk says that Holmes was "STATS FCS Defensive Player of the Year."

So it appears that, "technically," Holmes did not win the Buchanan Award.

OK, thank you very much for the clarification Ida. I would assume then, that "technically" , Deon King of Norfolk St. won the "Buck Buchanan Award" in 2015. Yes?

Right. So the award Tyrone Holmes won is the award that STATS voters like us vote on. But that one year, the Mickey Matthews Foundation owned the naming rights so they named a different Buck Buchanan Award winner. But it was not voted on by the same 160-person voting group normally attached to the Buck.

So to recap, Tyrone Holmes won the Buck Buchanan Award when it wasn't called the Buck Buchanan Award but someone else won the Buck Buchanan Award that year even though it wasn't the Buck they won. Get it?

Yep, that's my interpretation.

I remember when this same confusion happened with the Heisman when TBS bought Bleacher Report.

Sure, clear as mud. Thanks for the explanation !!

If I'm not mistaken, Brock Coyle was also snubbed. Brock was 2nd team despite his accomplishments, yet only him and Tripp from the 2013 BSC played a down in an NFL regular season game. Again I could be wrong since I am going on memory. The BSC really doesn't have much credibility in my opinion so I can be biased when I post.

This is exactly what happened. When Stats.com acquired SportsNetwork.con, who previously managed the awards, they didn't get the naming rights to those awards. Somehow, another entity acquired rights to thre Payton, Buchanan, etc, and awarded their own awards, but Stats is still the official award.

And if I recall, they were more regional awards. Honestly, the arrogance of someone or someones to get those award names and change them to their own agenda is pretty selfish. Glad it only lasted a year, but I wonder how they justified it to themselves...

Incredible athlete, student & citizen. More than deserving of every piece of recognition that comes his way.

Unless everything falls the Griz way, he played his last game at Washington-Griz Saturday. Seems only fitting my last memory of watching him play there was after the game when the team had gathered for their prayer tradition on the logo at midfield, he hustled to the entrance of the tunnel and congratulated every teammate as they filed up the corridor. As his last teammate trotted by, couldn’t help notice he turned back and took one last look at Washington-Griz Stadium. Best of luck, Dante, wherever life takes you. What a ride you have given Griz Nation!!
