Most memorable/hardest hit

Keith Thompson will forever live on as the hardest hitter DB in GRIZ history. It would be nice to have a DB hitter like him every season. Which GRIZ planted the EWU qb into GRIZ turf in 2015? That was the hardest hit of a qb I've ever seen live.

Believe that was Yamen Sanders.

Don't remember what year, don't remember who against, but I do remember Etu Molden totally leveling an opponent LB on a crackback block. He never saw him coming, but I was still thoroughly impressed considering how skinny Etu was. The KT vs App hit takes the cake though.

The hardest hit I witnesses was Washington State 1995, the Griz had a RB from Great Falls High that also was a kick returner. As he caught a kick off a WSU gunner launched and crowned him helmet to helmet. That was the only call that went for the Griz all day. The RB was instantly knocked out and the refs gave possession to the Griz. Think it made ESPN hit of the day. It was violent live and nasty in slow-mo.

That would have been Scott Spraggins. Hardly played, if ever again, after that that hit.

Biggest hit I have seen would have to be Kurt Schilling absolutely clobbering a South Dakota State player in Dickensons big comeback game in 93'. That hit was so hard it sent the guys helmet about 10' straight up in the air.

Keith Thompsons was second

Dave Decoite getting sucker punched in the balls by Northern Iowa is 3rd.

I also remember a hit during a Cat/Griz game in the mid 2000s. Cannot remember the players involved or the year, but there was a Cat receiver who got hit hard over the middle between two Griz defenders, causing his helmet to pop straight up.

I remember that hit as well. A de-cleater for sure. Set the tone for catches over the middle that day - several short armed reception attempts by cat receivers after that hit. Nobody wanted to catch it after that!

I remember that hit. I believe it was on the Cats best WR for that year too. Was the WR, Jefferson?

Kurt Schilling's hit was awesome. A pass out in the flat. The receiver jumped up to catch ball and was rotating downfield as he was about to land. Kurt got there just as receiver's toes touched ground. When receiver got up he picked up his helmet and then took another step to bend over and pick up an ear pad! Kurt was a live-in-the-moment guy and I would guess he still is.

Griz versus Cats 2009
at the 7-minute mark there is
Running back Thomas Brooks-Fletcher lowers the boom on linebacker Harris.
Harris makes it up to his feet but is very wobbly and is seeing stars.

That was everyone's favorite defensive scapegoat Yamen Sanders. :thumb:

It's gotta be the hit by the kid from Troy in the chipper (McElmurry). It wasn't just a nice hit, it literally had the biggest impact on our program. Changed the tenor of that game (and the following flag by Marshall helped too)

Glad you posted this...I was going to say the most game-changing hits by Griz I've witnessed were Blaine's hit against marshall receiver, (just walked off while the guy went nuts and Marshall coach told the receiver to shut his trap) and the other is the Keith Thompson hot against App. That was just thunderous and I wasn't far from the impact point.

...though if we're talking about the bobcats, watching McSurdy decleat bobcat after bobcat over in Bozeman enroute to a dominating performance (I forget the year) was both funny and heartwarming.

saw that one...don't think he ever quite recovered from that hit, career-wise.

poor Griz QB Scott Waak received the hardest and most-devastating hit in Washington-Griz Stadium and most-likely Griz history. This was before games were on Tv and the band-wagon was still in it's infancy, so I doubt many remember it. The crowd gasped in unison and went completely silent for the 10 minutes? or so it took before he was carted off and we all wondered if he was paralyzed or maybe even dead. I've seen 100's of Griz games and this is the one that will always stand out to me. Waak never played another down of football after that hit.

Spraggins was a nice kid. I use to hang with him back then. I drove over to Pullman and saw that game and I do remember him getting hurt and what you described sounds familiar, but I can't envision the hit in my mind or remember if it ended his career. That may be right.

Jake Soliday (who briefly played in the NFL) was the UNI Wr that punched DeCoite in the junk. That WAS a memorable hit for sure (and I can still envision that one), but I'd put any of Tim Hauck's 10 best hits over that one.

You are correct it was little Scottie Spaggins loved that kid. That was an example of the risks in playing FBS teams. Scott had a lot of heart was rough way to end his playing days. Another lowlight was Leaf's rocket arm in garbage time to run score up after Read pulled the starters.

I had a class with him and for the next 5 classes he introduced himself to me like we had never met.... guy was messed up

Not a Griz game, but still at WGS..... I doubt anyone remembers as there was probably only a couple thousand in the stands but it was years ago when we had that "semi pro" league around here. Helena was in town and their QB threw a swing pass to the running back and just as he turned up field and the ball arrived, so did Decoite at full speed. It's not like these were all stellar athletes either. Guy was probably like a 30 year old accountant or something so not used to taking hits like that. I thought he killed the poor guy.

DII team lol

Too many to name, McSurdy crushing the Cat WRs, Thompson in the playoffs, Homan taking out two Poly defenders, Wilson against the Cats, Brooks-Fletcher taking out that Cats LB, the hit on the Furman QB, the hit on Saffron, etc.
