Rushing Yards

The Nguyen Haters and Armchair Coaches Society is out in force today, I see ... as predictable as it is laughable. Reminds me of the Dan Moore Groupies Society of a few years ago. He never did do a goddamn thing but every Monday the EGriz girls were all wet legged about his latest imaginary exploits.

You can add the "Joey Counts Groupies Society" of current.

Against CP the Griz O including Jon Nguyen did execute great. They held time of possession up to give the D rest. They scored 41 points and only had two punts, going into game that should have been enough. Turnovers and points off turnovers were the difference and the O still put kicker in position to win, it would have been nice to see a shorter FG, but it was still makeable.

Jon had excellent pass protection, his forth down conversion was awesome, and he put the Griz in position to win on the last drive. This game did not require conventional ground attack. West Coast style of getting ball out quickly worked almost to perfection until DL got hand on short outside throw, JLM was responsible to protect QB and make play on tipped ball DB had better angle and JLM looked like he was stuck in the mud and just watched INT, instead of interrupting DBs play on ball (easy for me to see from the couch, much harder for JLM to make better play on ball when he looked a little gassed).

RBs played great, they pass protected, had success running when there were lanes and caught passes, overall they were solid. O was patient they didn't get greedy, controlled the clock, BG broke one of Dave Dickenson's records, JLM broke receiving record. CP played lights out, the better team did not win. Hats off to CP for adjusting, for scoring TDs, and for the win.

Griz fans should be happy we have as solid of RBs as we do. Jon N is a great player for this system and this team. The rest of the RBs can learn from how this lil guy consistently is available to play, and how productive he is. That's why when you see sideline shots, teammates are tapping him on the helmet and showing him respect, because he is giving 100%, respect is earned and his peers respect him. Some of the large bodies could learn a lot from Jon's example.

Right... Nguyen has had the bad fortune of playing behind some of the weakest lines we've had in recent years. He is not only an excellent back, but is one of the most versatile we've had in his blocking and receiving.

All you need know about how things went Saturday. Nicely played.

Versatile, gamer, yes. Good enough to be the feature RB on nationally contending team, not so much.

John is as good as he can be. He can't help his lack of speed and small size. If we can relax and watch as the season moves on other backs will show some good things and give little John a rest.

Good point. We could stand to run the ball better, but we kind of use the pass as a ball control/run game. JLM caught almost all of his passes out in the flat off a quick release by Gus. The disturbing trend was JLM's receptions really didn't amount to much after the big touchdown. His first 8 catches were for 120 yards, but the last 13 gained just 35.

Those negative receptions came off of whiffed stock blocks by the receivers (Horner had two hideous ones that stand out in my brain).

Contact Stitt with your imaginary replacement.
He can't endure the kind of rushing performance we have seen so far for the rest of the year. Running behind the same (maligned) OL:

Favors 6.6 yard ave.; 0 TDs
Calhoun 4.2 yard ave. 3 TDs
Nguyen 2.9 yard ave. 0 TDs

Nguyen's running style (east to west) is a nightmare for an OL; north to south running is far easier to block for an OL and far less risk of a TFL. Stitt will figure it out; hopefully soon. Nguyen is a good situational back; used as the feature back puts real limitations for the offense.

One stat missing...fumbles. Also, availability. Like flashes of Favors, seems to be nicked up a lot. Calhoun has availability problems also. Team can always count on Nguyen. Nguyen understands offense and pass protection. This isn't your momma's power run game, it is used to keep D honest.

Defensive coordinators really have to put a priority on our running attack in their planning.

You are correct on his style. I'm not sure you can attribute it to this when he gets caught before he starts.

During the coaches show, Stitt said he considers the screens to JLM a part of the running game. Favors & Calhoun have had some dings, and Counts is Counts. Nguyen's blocking & catches out of the backfield are what Stitt appears to be looking for because a read option running game isn't really an option right now.

Really? It is sure used a lot, particularly on first down if it is not an option. It's crazy, not a defensive mind on the field fears our QB keeping. 2nd and nine.....

More of a hope and prayer. It's gotten so predictable that when Brady makes the handoff the outside LB has typically crashed the backside and is riding Nyugen to the ground. Stitt also made an under-bus reference about a handoff in the last drive that should have been a pitch to JLM. So I'd guess a few of those handoffs would be viewed as incorrect calls.

"Stitt will figure it out; hopefully soon. “

Yes, I certainly hope Stitt and the rest of the staff get up to your speed before the season is over.

Root announcers figured it out that Brady wouldn't run after part of one game....painfully obvious....only running game is Calhoun with a true running play....not a stupid fake read option look. Favors can't seem to stay healthy, Nyguen dances waiting for a hole to open which won't or runs in back of a stationary lineman who isn't even sure if it was a handoff of pass to a receiver behind the line of scrimmage. Defense can key on RB, they know Brady will keep about 1% of time and if he does it is for a short gain ended by a slide so no damage.

Prepare for a lot of drives like against UNI
