Tue, March 30, 2021, 9:09 AM NCAA kicks Beavers out of hotel in the middle of the night after Elite 8 loss originally appeared on NBC Sports Northwest

The Oregon State Beavers men’s basketball team made an improbable run that no one saw coming. But on Monday night, the No.12 Beavers fell to the No. 2 Houston Cougars 67-61 in the Elite 8. The Cinderella story for the Beavers came to an end, but it was a valiant effort. You would think the NCAA would do everything they can to make sure a team like the Beavers would be treated like royalty, especially after making it to the Elite 8. Well, that sadly isn’t what happened.

According to Nick Daschel of the Oregonian, the NCAA didn’t have the nicest parting gift for the Beavers after their loss to Houston. Instead of letting the Beavs fly out the next morning, the NCAA told them to pack up and get on a 1:15 am flight back to Eugene. The team arrived in Corvallis at 4 am Tuesday. . . .

Don't get me started on this. That's just more bucks in the pockets of these oily fat-cat administrators and avaricious buck-hustling businessmen who are getting rich on the backs of STUDENT-athletes. (STUDENT capitalized so they can perpetuate the hypocrisy that this is just good old-fashioned intercollegiate athletics, nothing to do with money, money, money.

You see all the ads about STUDENT-athletes who have become doctors and public officials and general all-round great grownups, all to make you think how great it is that these kids had this GREAT OPPORTUNITY, the while these fat-cats exploit them for riches. Okay, you don't want to pay them DIRECTLY. Oh no! Not that! But you'd think they could get them home at a decent hour after all the thrills they gave the country in search of another big contract. Nope!

Houston 67, Oregon State 61. Oh so close. Oh so thrilling. Oh so heartbreaking.

Oregon State’s Cinderella story may have ended, but the Beavers hope to write the sequel in the very near future.

Until then, Beaver Nation can look back on an incredible postseason run that included wining three games in three days at the Pac-12 tournament just to have a chance at the team's first NCAA tournament berth since 2016.
. . . Oregon State then fought off Colorado, 70-68, for the Pac-12 tournament title before putting it on Tennessee (70-56) to win their first NCAA tournament game since 1982.

The Beavers then channeled their resilience from the Oregon game in the Pac-12 tournament, fending off Oklahoma State after the Cowboys overcame an 18-point deficit to get within two with 11:21 to play. But Oregon State was not to be denied and closed out an 80-70 victory. That made the magical run sweet with a Sweet 16 appearance.

After a slow start against Loyola Chicago, the Beavers took the lead and never gave it back in knocking off the Cinderella story of the 2018 tournament, 65-58, to become just the second No. 12 seed to reach the Elite Eight. While this improbable and thrilling run will be one Beaver Nation enjoys over the years, the hard work now begins for Wayne Tinkle and Co.

Yes, they have been working hard the past seven years, but now expectations will be to return to the tournament and reproduce the type of play that allowed the Beavers to go deep into March. Now is the time to capitalize on this run, build off the restored faith in the fan base and battle for the conference title year in and year out. I mean, who doesn’t want to spend every March filling in Oregon State to make a deep run in the tournament?

Time to begin writing the sequel.

. . . The Beavers, who became the Cinderella of the 2021 Big Dance by becoming only the second 12-seed to ever to reach the Elite Eight, now find themselves armed with the necessary capital to be able to win big-time recruiting battles.

"It's something we can really build off of," head coach Wayne Tinkle said. "We had a helluva run, and we'll keep building this thing moving forward." . . . Now that's all changed... Whereas the Beavers used to have to cut their losses with recruits that they knew they didn't have a decent shot at, now, because of this run, they've become an attractive landing spot for recruits.

"As far as recruiting, I mean, we have people e-mailing and texting us now. I think it's going to open up a lot of those doors," Tinkle said. "This impacts us with regards to recruiting, support, and the confidence that our guys are going to have." With the Beavers bringing in Memphis transfer Ahmad Rand, Farleigh Dickson transfer Xzavier Malone-Key, and JUCO guard Dashawn Davis this offseason to join the group that just made this run, it's not hard to imagine why the Beavers could be in the mix to be back in the dance again...

"This was almost an unprecedented run, but we feel like we were this close. If we all can find a way to gain that much more from each other, we'll be able to take another step. I'm so thrilled for our university, for our state, for our program. I know there are great things ahead."/quote]

`I will never forget Tinkle and players in the locker room & he is chest bumping all the players either pre or post! Thanks Wayne you have made all of Griz Nation proud as so many other coaches before you!
