3 reasons for and 3 reasons against an improved 2016 defense

I have never heard of a coach encouraging personal fouls. I don't think that is the way you want to play and win the game.

Before the 2008 or 2009 Griz-Cat game I sat in a QB Club meeting where Bobby Hauck told everyone he made his O-line promise to get at least 2 personal fouls. He also said he told Schann Schillenger who, "is the nicest guy on the team that he'd damned well better get a personal foul called on him."

Sometimes it's just a mental aspect of the game. I think if you go back and ask some of the big DOLA guys from Hauck's era they'll reflect upon their best personal fouls with fondness.
Gotta play with attitude. I kind of doubt Stitt will straight up say "you need to get x amount of personal fouls" but I know they loved the way Strahm played this last year. He won two postseason awards.

That UND punter was flopping every time he went out against us this year. After Strahm smoked him he was legitamitely hurt and played timid afterwards. The benefits outweigh 15 yards.

Strahm could have a massive year for us at MLB. He's exactly what's needed to get the defense back to playing MEAN. Loves to hit, and Brint said it perfectly, he's a bully on the field. 1-2 personal fouls per game is worth the effect he has out there.
Oh, so Strahm is the designated enforcer/goon? Maybe other teams have one or two. How will that play out? You think other teams are subject to physical punishment more than the Griz?

To me, a personal foul means the player committed it either out of inability to play fairly or intentionally committing the foul. For what purpose? So, the Griz D holds the other team, only to lose its hard work by some idiot committing either an unintentional or (even worse) an intentional foul?

The game goes slow enough w/ all the timeouts for this or that, but to delay the game so the other team can march off 15 yards it hasn't earned? I'm sure losing 15 yards one way or the other has a debilitating effect on the other Griz players.

I write as an interested fan. Football is violent enough w/o personal fouls, which can also cause debilitating injury to a player. To encourage players to commit them is downright brutality. And, I'm sure any player committing a PF will have the officials' eyes on them.
Strahm is a fierce and relentless competitor. The complete opposite of "timid and weak"....and our defense has gotten a bit timid over the last few years. Playing "not to make mistakes" other than playing to make plays. We need guys like Strahm to make us feared again on defense. Plus....1-2 personal fouls on our defensive unit per game is NOT THAT MUCH. It's worth it.

Complete moron. I'm reporting myself. Go ahead, band me. F&@king morons. Guys like Strahm don't need to do any but play. Are you hearing yourself? Personal fouls are OK. Moron.

Have to agree...personal fouls are generally a sign of a player who is frustrated or trying to do too much. I rarely see it give momentum to that side of the ball. Just the opposite, it gives the other team a first down, way better field position. Good offenses aren't "afraid" of undisciplined defenses, but draw confidence in the fact that they are able to frustrate the other team into making stupid plays.

In terms of Griz games, I think more about teams who have visited us in the playoffs, lost their composure when it became clear we would win, and their inability to deal with adversity was their undoing and ultimately made for an easier Griz victory. I found myself pretty frustrated with Strahm's fouls last year, and certainly didn't feel like it "scared" anybody. He could be great, but to argue and encourage bone-headed plays is pretty ridiculous. McSurdy (decleated the entire Bobcat offense in one game), Keith Thompson, Blaine McElmurry (especially his hit against the Marshall receiver in 95) come to mind as no-nonsense, non-penalized momentum changers. Hit hard and get back to the huddle.

Sounds kind of like a dick move. Probably fostered some of the things you saw on Hauck's teams (The Cody Balogh debacle for example). PR - how do you feel about this? Honest question.

An ass-load of wins?

Hauck hated the cats and also knew his most loyal supports (and financial boosters of the program) fed off of it. It could be a mix of playing to the crowd and getting his team motivated, IMO.

This.

I would venture a guess that McSurdy's hit and Thompson's two hits would be called personal fouls, unnecessary roughness and/or targeting penalties in today's pussified version of the game.

What I wouldn't give to have these two guys back in the defensive backfield. How often does an FCS team get both of its safeties to the NFL? (Not to mention defensive back mates Tru and Jimmy, whose UM careers overlapped some of their years....)

If our defense is going to get back to being a top tier national unit we will need more duos like Shann & Colt and Jimmy & Tru.
