New #37

Even Tripp was considered for the #37 as an underclassmen, but it was well known that he was wearing #44 in honor of his dad...

If Tripp gave up his family's number to wear 37, I highly doubt anyone else would turn it down.

It was a pretty simple question, has anyone ever been handed the 37 but decided not to wear it because they like their own number. I don't think anyone would, but you never know.

Ya I think Osama Bin Laden did this!

44?

Was that his dad's number or IQ?

The vast majority of the tradition of the #37 is that it goes to a player for 3 years.

Tucker Schye fits the mold perfectly in that storied tradition. :egriz:

This is my vote for POY. I highly doubt you guys will set up this particular category though... :egriz: P.S. The only higher honor I could imagine would be if you were this DI 4 star recruit at Q.B. You are being recruited by EVERYONE and an "A" student with impeccable character. (Montanan of course) You decide on the U.M. and a special individual releases his number for your tenure at Grizville... ah somewhere between 14 and 16. Enough fantasy for a day.

When is the selection usually announced? I would assume it's at the end of spring ball, or maybe even after fall camp?
Any insight insiders?

Early Feb to late July... Up to the current 37 to decide. Upcoming Pro day seems a good fit for timing to me

For the first time in forever, it's AG1. So let it go. :coffee:

I know it's a great Griz tradition and all but why the number 37? It's such an "unpopular" and kinda of a ugly number. What's the story behind it?

#44 was his dad only; grandpa Gene wore #74 (37 X 2).

The history of the #37:

There have been a couple of constants in this thing. One is that whoever gets the jersey is an in-state recruit.

The other, as Paulson points out, is that whoever hands it down "has to do his homework."

In that regard Paulson sees added benefit - that it forces the players to pay attention to who is doing well on the scout team or in practice.

I think he knew all of these. His question is why #37 instead of another number as the special one.

I don't think they handpicked the 37 as a legacy number, I think it just kind of happened that way.
