That would be a dick move if he did that.

Looking back, it doesn't look like gogriz.com did an announcement on the #37. Jace Lewis announced it on social media and local media ran with it. Also, I don't see any quotes from Bobby in any of those stories.

Wait, I thought Robb Stark (or whatever his name is) was “The Real 37”. I’m honestly surprised you guys haven’t changed your colors to maroon and silver yet.

It would be an interesting take on the tradition for sure if Bobby truly wanted Robbie to be the next #37 after the current player selected someone else. Not sure why he would even get involved if the coach hasn't been a part of that process before. I guess one could just ask a previous player who wore #37 how they selected the next guy and if the coaches are consulted. In any event, Robbie was born in the state of Montana but did not play high school football in Montana. Not that it is a requirement to play high school football in Montana but it looks like to be all the previous #37's did.

I guess it's understandable that the U wants to make a big "announcement" but if that's the case, they didn't manage the process well at all and it's too late to put the rabbit back in the hat now.

Exactly, I hope it much a do about nothing and they just waiting for the Great Griz Encounter to make it official. Anything other than that seems very strange at this juncture?

I'm actually surprised an offensive player hasn't had this number since the original (fullback). Is that more to do with the actual set of numbers and what players in certain position groups can wear? Nothing in the legacy does it say it has to go to a defensive player.

The Robb Stark reference made me laugh out loud. Well done....respect.

You’re one of the good ones, homie. Hope you’re well.

I agree. What if Welnel wants someone else to have it? We have zero info.

Really? That jersey number is a ticket to NIL$. Why on earth would someone take a pass? Just doesn't make sense to me. But, maybe I am a selfish SOB. :)

Just a wild ponder. What if NIL is the problem? UM has profited from #37. Do they have ownership? License? What if the wearer decides to profit?

I may be mistaken, but it seems to me #37 has always been officially revealed at the GGE. I don't think this is anything new or different.

Makes for a fun conspiracy theory, however!

Some good and intriguing additions.

That Camden Ver Strate from Washington was a hell of an athlete and fast as hell. I could see him making some impact.

I love that we got Barnum’s kid too! I believe he was playing baseball at Wash St. Good football player who we had been recruiting before his baseball commitment.

And word on the street is that Walker from Nebraska is an absolute monster

Walker here…beast mode

Sexy Bill Gates approves.

Looks like starting OL goes:

Walker—Mayginnes—Forbes—Brown—Casey.

I heard "Crooked Bobby" was going to "build a wall" around the 37 jersey, to protect it from the NWO and those socialists who are after our guns.

Walker was listed a D-lineman last year at Nebraska. Looks like he worked with the O-line his redshirt year, and then moved to defense. Was hurt one year.

I heard it was a throw in to lure Cooper Barnum. Bobby is just sick of what 37 represents and thought he could get one over on his pal Bruce at the same time. The ceremony should be stellar, heard dot's pretzels will be raining down of the festivities. Bring your favorite drinking hat.

Jace is the ONLY person who can announce it...

Who is consulting? There are only 2 people involved in the process. #37 and the new #37.
Wrong-o. Bobby has been “involved in the process” from the beginning.

From the “origin” story:
The jersey was passed to Hauck over beers with Kraig and Bobby at Red’s Bar in downtown Missoula.

Jace selects it. Doesn't mean he officially announces it.

#37 should profit...that's the rules...

Name a time in the social media age when #37 does not announce it...the tradition doesn't belong to anyone but 37s.

I'm not a big SM guy, so I'm probably the wrong person to ask. I'm sure they've tweeted it out before, but that doesn't mean UM has officially announced it, or that Hauck is willing to discuss it. As I noted above, they usually do a presentation and announcement at the GGE.

...and none of that matters because the tradition belongs to 37s. They announce when they want to.

Evidently they don't.
