Spring Football

I just put some feelers out to see if Southeast Missouri State would be interested in playing in one of these non-conference games. I'll let you know if I hear anything.

My guess is this will never happen. I think there is a reason that 3 schools announced playing 2 games each.

I would bet on Western and Tech.

It will be interesting to see how many other conferences opt out. And if the numbers dwindle enough to not support a championship, if anyone plays.

I would bet on Western and Tech.

KEM, Currently the Frontier Conference is playing a 7 game schedule. You think this decision will have trickle down to the Frontier ranks? As it currently stands they would not be able to scrimmage a western and tech, those seasons would have to cancel themselves as well.

In case you missed it, here's everything Montana AD Kent Haslam, Griz head coach Bobby Hauck had to say about the "modification" of spring football for the Grizzlies

Why didn't Big Sky Conference go ahead and play a fall schedule? Un-real.... Why didn't UM and MSU just play I think we can all agree a spring season was never going to happen, but why pretend?
To keep the fanbase and most importantly the the booster and donors engaged with the program.

Exactly

Don't despair griz nation, I'm sure that you all will work up the courage to leave your igloos by June. :D Snowmobile season will just be getting underway about then.

Nope. In Bozeman.

I could swear I read something in a news article that said the rotation would be preserved but I have no idea where I would have seen it.
I could’ve sworn I read the same thing too. I think it may have been a tweet from Shaun Rainey where he asked the conference if it doesn’t get played and they said they would preserve the order. They might as well just remake the schedule now. They’re gonna have to remake it for 2022 and 2023 when Southern Utah leaves so just do it now and put cat Griz in Missoula this upcoming season.

I've heard the UM coaches were concerned about playing a spring season. I don't know why.

I can understand concerns about practicing and playing in the winter. It's hard enough to prepare for the playoffs in December, and in some cases into early January. But, the team has done that.

I also note that UM starts spring ball in early March, plays 2 weeks, takes a week off, and then comes back for two weeks. Spring ball is done by just after mid-April. In terms of preparation, what's the difference? Some, but not a huge amount, in my view. I get that starting practice in early Feb. for a late Feb. game is different.

I understand the cost argument. Don't the know the amount.

I'm sorry, but covid is just not a big health risk for players playing now. Probably not much for coaches. Covid risk does not go to zero by not playing a spring season.

UM thinks it has a championship quality team. Why not play for that? Will UM still have a championship team for a fall season. I hope so, but I assume some players will move on.

I know football is long, and long seasons and many games can take a toll on a team. But, if someone is hurt in spring and can't or shouldn't play in the fall, they won't or shouldn't play in fall. What's the risk there? Some from playing so many games in a period of 10 months.

Pretty informative stuff. Sounds like Bobby and Kent are pretty excited about it. Sounds like going through a “fall ball” like practice schedule in outdoor early feb is the biggest concern followed by the quick rebound to this fall where everyone is anticipating a much more “normal” fall. Bobby says team is good with it. Two real out of conference games will be played, hopefully against FCS opponents. Fans will be a possibility too if the county allows it then. I’m sure the opposition’s con and league will have to have some sort of allowed spring schedule going on. Kent eluded to how are games need to follow the FCS schedule dates. I’m sure as other schools cancel their spring schedules, some good possibilities should open up.
