Recruiting

Sunday's Missoulian had a season wrap up type article on the Griz. Tinks said there are two scholarships available and the Griz would be looking for a Kareem Jamar type shooting guard and a rebounder.

Aubrey Dawkins is a recruit I know that we have been looking at. http://www.verbalcommits.com/schools/montana" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Son of Johnny Dawkins, but I see he also has an offer from sweet 16 participant Dayton.

Yea but we would play them right away. I bet we sign one incoming freshmen sg and one transfer. We have four sg transfers we are in contact with...no supposed offers yet but well see. I bet we see some offers start flying here soon

I would hope that Tink would look seriously look for a center the likes of Mathias Ward or Straight... The Griz would definitely benefit from a center who was athletic. Definitely not like Maritn... We haven't had a good center in a while...

I agree Edd. Did anyone else tear up a bit this weekend while watching Huestis and Edwards in the Dance? Ugh, not to start a debate on where they should have gone but hypothetically those 2 would have made an obvious difference in the team this season.

Huestis definitely would have been huge for the Griz this year, and last year of course too. Edwards didn't play much for Gonzaga though. He didn't play at all in the first game and only played a few minutes in the 2nd game. I'm sure he'll probably turn out pretty good for Gonzaga but it's way too early to tell.

Huestis on the other hand did a great job on Wiggins in their win over KU. Held him to 4 points (with the help of double teams to of course). He averaged over 11 points, 8+ rebounds and nearly 2 blocked shots a game this year for Stanford. He had 7 double doubles including a 22 points 13 rebound game against then #3 Arizona.

It was all I could think about watching the Stanford game...

To my knowledge no centers are being recruited. Ward was no bigger than brunig really. Andy ison a big wweight gain program and hopes to add some bulk. Remember he's still a true soph. He will mature a lot this next year.

Edwards looks like he is running in rubber boots in a wet field with 15 pounds of mud on each boot. He may be ok in a special situation, but I don't think he would have added a lot to our program. I would rather stick with the guys we have.

Martin may be a true sophomore, but after high school he attended prep school for one season. This is technically a third year since he graduated from high school. I was hoping that he would have bulked up more by this point and that he would have matured a little more on the court by now. I haven't lost hope, just mildly disappointed that he hasn't taken off yet.

Andy's biggest obstacles are his frame is not ready to support a lot more weight yet, and he has a laid back personality/demeanor. Physically only time and the right exercise routine will allow him to put on more weight. How much can he put on though? Some players find a way to find an attitude and meaness on the court. Only Andy can control finding that kind of mental toughness and tenacity. He also needs more discipline when defending the paint. He is usually in right position to block shots and change shot trajectory. His problem, he very seldom jumps with his arms straight up. His arms or his jump are usually jumping into shooters. That causes his foul trouble. If he can become consistent at jumping straight up he could average 2 plus blocks per game. It would also keep him on the court more to help with rebounding. I have always liked his potential. He has a very high ceiling. He is also damn agile for a 7 footer. I pray for a dynamic offseason will lead to a break out JR campaign for him. He is definitely and intriguing project player. Imagine the center a team would have with Andy's agility and Edward's size.

Here is to hoping Andy gets it done in the off season. :thumb:

ESPN has us interested in Jaime Orme. A 6' 6" wing from O'Dea High School in Seattle. Pretty good highlight here on the youtube. Its from his junior year, seems to rely on his athleticism but has quite a bit of it. Pretty much nothing in terms of a jump shot from the video. Pretty active on d and finishes well. Who knows the real interest level but just thought I'd throw it out there

Wonder if Tinkle is interested in him as a 4, like what Wiley would have likely been. According to VerbalCommits.com he has an offer from Portland State right now.

of course, dayton beat his dad's team to become this year's official cinderella.

This is sweet, a familiar big recruit apparently has resurfaced. I just checked this last week and there was nothing. We are back in the running for Jonathan Galloway it looks like. I hope this is true. It has the GRIZ listed and offered.

This is the 1st time I have seen Matthew Thomas listed here for us too.

New name here in Dillon Reise. He is a very long guard, which would be nice. I don't know much about him. Looks like a pretty under the radar player. New Mexico is the biggest program of interest for him. http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/recruiting/recruit-search-results" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

no new names here.

grizrule: i just don't trust scout or rivals. i'm positive galloway signed with cal irvine during the early signing period--but i could be wrong. maybe it was just a verbal. historically, it seems the kids we wind up signing are total surprises, under anybody's radar, even mslacat's.

You are right about Galloway. http://ucirvinesports.com/sports/m-baskbl/2013-14/releases/20131114sap8j7" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

"The addition of Galloway could give UCI at least eight players standing 6-8 and taller next season."

Must be nice.

I was hoping there was a change of heart by Galloway. I think that is way too many bigs on the UCI roster, can we get 1 or 2? Here is to hoping Galloway has reconsidered. :thumb:
