Good god this is a slippery slope folks. Does the star chamber faculty now get to approve all hires? Have we looked into all aspects of their lives? What if one of their children has had a run in with the law? Do we fire them on the spot? What if their spouse gets a DUI? Are they really capable of teaching our younger people? Are any of these folks advisers and if so, are they making sure their assigned students are upholding the standards they have established for others?
I really think we need to cull the faculty herd and I have 28 nominations for the new President.

i know a couple of people on this list. they are intelligent, good people. and Griz fans. i think their concerns for the hire partially stem from funding cuts (read: faculty cuts) which were directly related to the drop in enrollment. if UM took another hit like that they would be very concerned about losing their own jobs, and i'm sure some felt the squeeze from the last round. having an open forum with coach Hauck might be just what this situation needs. he's an adult, and if you are a collegiate football coach I think you can handle some pointed questions from concerned faculty members.

This isn't 6th grade dating... Why the hell does Hauck have to meet with those fools. That is a stupid request, one of the dumbest I have read.

he's now a University of Montana employee, and these are his fellow employees. and while a majority of UM folks agree with the hire, the petition reflects a far larger group of people than the 28 who signed it. i really don't see the harm in a meeting, especially if it helps to quell any concerns that...i will say it...RESPECTED faculty members may have. in the long run i believe it would buy the football program a lot of goodwill, for a very small investment.

Let’s be real... this has as much to do with Trump and the national butt hurt feelings of liberals as it does Bobby Hauck.

Cry babies got their feelers hurt.

Disagree totally!

I support the Hauck hiring, but consider Trump to be a lying con-artist. One has nothing to do with the other. Keep politics out of a college football forum.

I disagree. Liberal moral outrage is at an all time high. And yes, that carries over from national to local. How do you explain the false and inaccurate statements regarding Hauck?

And sorry. Did I miss where anyone was talking “football” in this thread?

Don’t all students have faculty advisors in their field of study? Are these advisors also culpable for encouraging whatever behaviors their mentees exhibit, good and bad?

Ouch,

Well Played

It seems a stretch here to want to introduce logic to those who fail to employ it, but these faculty surely must also then agree their own employment hiring and tenures should be to subject to periodic review of the behaviors of those the law imposes the greatest duty of supervision and responsibility, their children.

Their concerns are fair and I'm sure this is something that Hauck, Haslam, Bodnar, and Stearns discussed at length. Asking for the hire to be reconsidered is a little silly, IMO. However I think their alternate suggestion of having meetings with Hauck/Haslam to discuss concerns and remedies are perfectly fine.

They had to know this was coming, and then add in the firestorm that was whipped up because of it (I see they're asking for Schlosser's season tix to be revoked), it probably brought on extra concern.

Great post. I agree fully. Look, like it or not, Hauck was a controversial hire. Some of that controversy was of his own making, some of it fabricated. But make no mistake: it WAS a controversial hire. But I guarantee that Kent is wise enough to have known that and to have processes in place to deal with the fallout, this included.

I don't view it as a controversial hire. It was a no-brainer. Of course, some people were/are against it, but, personally, I could give a rip about them.

I know 3 of the individuals on this list. I assure you they are about as liberal as they come. I know that 2 of them are vocally against athletics, and feel that everything wrong at the university stems from the "devaluing of a liberal arts education" (Their words....)
Well, by charging $75,000 to learn something that pays $35,000 the liberal arts education is devaluing itself.

I have a liberal arts degree. And I can assure you I make a figure far in excess of $35,000. Liberal arts includes far more than interpretive dance, people.

If that's true, based on your posts, you must be grossly overpaid.

While a stretch, I suppose the argument could be made. The primary difference, of course, is that the academic advisers didn't recruit those kids to campus.

In certain situations, it is a valid analogy. For instance, my friend chose his graduate school as a direct result of the recruitment by the dean of admissions and one professor. I've yet to see them pay for his 2010 bigamy charge in Vegas (acquitted!), or his pending charge for the "illegal" importing of ocelot wigs. They clearly hate all ocelots.

That ocelot story rings a bell. Was there a book written about that? "Crime and Ocelots in a Wig Town", or something to that effect?

Probs. Because I'm quite confident I earn considerably more than you. I just brag about it a great deal less.

How much does the revenue from the football program get spread around.

It's a misconception to state the athletic program earns income. It's still revenue negative and needs state funding to survive.

Cry some more losers. Here's the deal, when someone who is not an athlete commits a crime or heck if they flunk you class..............YOU SHOULD ALSO BE FIRED!!! Oh and be prepared for a wake up call to the adult/real world when a real President runs the UM!! GO GRIZ!!!!

I'm certain that there isn't any students taught by the educators on this list have ever been charged with any type of crime, let alone convicted. If so, you would have read about it in the Missoulian or in the Kaimin.

Get a grip.

How much do you make? What's your net worth? How many houses do you own? How many ranches? How many are in the Bakken? Why don't you pick 1 relative and I'll pick 1 relative, and we'll compare net worths? Ha.

More than you. More than yours. Depends what you call a "house", I guess, but depending on your definition, more than one, less than seven. I don't ranch. None are in the Bakken (thank God). I have no desire to meet your relatives and have absolutely no idea what they have to do with one's net worth.

You don't think any student NOT an athlete has ever broken the law?? You are an idiot. Athletes are higher profile cases because they are ambassadors of the UM, students are every day people that the Kaiman and Missoulian don't fully care about. Maybe you should research and see if anyone else in the world breaks the law other than UM football players. Did he make some poor decisions 8 years ago, sure but he didn't promote or encourage them to commit crimes. Have the people on this list been 100% perfect their entire career? Have they had 100% of their students be perfect law abiding citizens? and have 100% of their students passed and succeeded? DOUBT IT. I was making a point that maybe they get off their soap box and give him a chance. So i will not get a grip!! FO!

Btw, did Don Reed have players make mistakes? Delaney? any other University??

+1

+2 I'm pretty liberal, proud of it and I love Griz football.

You have no sense of humor either. I saw you have 1 or 2 houses. You are against oil wells and leases? You actually have claimed to have met some/one of my relatives, so too late on that.

Simple questions...

What right do they have to ask? Is it in their contract to have an opinion on all hires at UM?

I know one on that list thats a self proclaim drug user when they were in college. Should that end their job at UM?

This world is screwed up... and common sense has been flushed right down shiter.
