they did just about what UCD allows in almost all categories.
That's what's making me a little cautious about being too optimistic about the improvements we saw yesterday. It was done against a very bad defense, one of the worst in the FCS.
Next week is the beginning of our "Lets see what we really got" stretch of the conference schedule. 5-2 is probably what many of us (including the ones not enthralled by Delaney and company) thought we'd be at this point in the season. Starting next week instead of smacking around bad & mediocre offenses and mostly bottom-half to awful defenses we start to face VERY good offenses and...well... still mostly bad defenses.
Cal Poly right now is #1 in the country in rushing offense, #14 in total offense and #24 in scoring offense. 4 of our next 5 opponents are top 20 offense teams in the FCS. The 5th (SUU) is a great passing team (#6) but doesn't do so well scoring or anything else for that matter.
So this will be a great test for our very good D starting next week. I think it's going to be very important for our offense to take advantage of the bad defenses and hopefully make the TOP battle a little more equal giving our D a rest so they don't tire out late in the game. Right now we are one of the worst in TOP, and 3 of the 5 teams we face are very good in that category (CP, EWU & MSU).
So it's crunch time for the Griz. We get to see what our D is truly made of and hopefully get to see some good offensive production as well!

Griz have played #8, #11 and #13 in total offense. Beat #8 42-28, Beat #11 38-13 and beat #13 18-15.
Cal Poly has played #3, 7, #8, #11 and #12 in defense. Against #3 they lost 38-35, and beat #7 42-14, #8 30-24, #11 56-27 and #12 42-39.
My point? We've built our defensive numbers against bad offensive teams, but Cal Poly has built their offensive #'s against largely bad defensive teams. Against a bad NMSU team CP was only able to muster 10 points, and only 18 in a blowout loss to South Dakota State.
If we're going to question the Griz' true defensive potential I would also caution against reading a ton into any of CP's offensive statistics right about now....
